Monk.....I'm a (retired) lawyer, not a military dude.  But.....even I can work out what would have been happening there.  Word would have been spread to exit specific areas, allowing ISIS in.  Then, those who left those areas regroup well out of harm's way.  That leaves a very defined area for the air power to beat the sh*t out of......ISIS ferked by air power ~ BUT with troops still there to creep back in to what had just been blown to smithereens.

QED.

Yes, the US got shamed into doing some effective air raids, ISIS is not much of a fighting force.

Don’t know what they will do—all out attack on Baghdad and get wiped out and a heap of Sunnis with them?

Shamed?  Not by the Australian greens and other sandalistas opposed to an intervention to stop ISIS raping and looting its way through the region.  Who are you claiming shamed them into an intervention?

And before the inevitable carry on, I oppose any intervention that is not explicitly requested by the UN, and even then I might be hesitant.  No rewards for the west in the ME.

I can't see that 6 fighter jets are going to make much difference Aussie. I think I'd rather see that $500 million spent on giving the ADF a decent wage rise.

very self centred how can we talk about the poor innocent Palestinians being killed by Jewish bombs.. and not innocent muslims being beheaded and terrorised..by their very own?...

havent you noticed the war seems to have gone off the radar a little bit.. who knows maybe 6 jets are making a difference..

I cannot understand what is the point of having fighter planes /battle ships/ defence forces if we never use them for what their main purpose is...

and I know for one thing... I would rather a war take place overseas than ever come to our own front door.

I think we should thank god we are in such a place as to be able to help those who cannot help themselves..

Cods, what gave me pause to think about Aussie's P.O.V., was the publication that the Kurds have been involved in terrorist acts across the board against legitimate Governments historically. A fact I was not across.

I haven't changed my stance on Genocide but if we are going to get real over there, then the War doesn't stop at the Syrian border.

Either go after ISIL full on or we might as well pack up and come home.

Bit rich with ISIS just about to take Kobane and our fighters won't cross the Syrian border. The Syrian Government is a shambles, our fighters should cross the border and get stuck in. I don't see the U.S. letting sensibilities stop them from flying combat missions into Syria.

If we want to defeat ISIL we fight them where they are.

That is why I am calling this a Phoney War, at least as far as we are concerned.

look at our own history then for that matter.. two world wars.. both involved Brits and Germany...yet its been a long time since I heard of a Brit killing a German or vice versa..

same with the Japs and Yanks..all mates now..

we all hav ea history of killing.. that doesnt mean we dont change or have a new way of dealing with whatever it is that causes wars of all  kinds...

ISIL is the aggressor here not the Kurds no matter what their past is... thats gone and done..its now we have to worry about.. ISIL is not a country I dont even know what they want to be honest.. it is control of religion??.. is it power by fear?? do they really expect the rest of the world to do business with them.. when/ if they finally get what they after????? not very likely so whats in it for those in control of ISIL?...

to me its a form of madness...[madcow maybe] it has no meaning.. look at Hitlers mind blowing control of Europe..6 years of hell...what good did it do him?...he went mad.. hundreds of thousands died... and for WHAT..it all went back to how it was just scarred and weary..I think the West had learnt something from all of that.....but ideology religious madness seems to know no boundaries....as one nutter leaves another takes his place...

this is why I am thinking bombs wont halt them.. famine and pestilence could though...

ISIL is a Sunni (extreme) reaction to defeat and marginalisation by the Shia over the last 20 years.

The only way the US and allies could enter Iraq to conduct war was with the covert approval of Iran (a Shi'ite state). The deal included installing Al Maliki (a Shi'ite) as Prime Minister whose disastrous administration included blatant discrimination against Sunni Iraqis.

well all I know is no matter what anyone does or says.. nothing will stop these people hating each other.. they hate and kill its all they have ever done.. they are all Arabs after all..just like we are all westerners...do we hate and kill each other just for the sake of it??..

I dont care what names you put on them.. they should all work as one.. for the sake of their country and peace....

but they dont...one year its this mob thats being pushed out.. the next its the other mob...back and forth...

have you noticed how quiet the GAZA has been lately??... and Egypt has a hush over it all of a sudden..
