Abbott makes rednecks and bigots super mad.

After all of the loonies hard work trying to get a ban on a piece of clothing, it's looking like common sense will prevail and we don't ostracize a minority even further than we already have.

Any chance we can get on with moving the country forward now, and actually concentrating on something relevant , and important.

There's no chance of moving the country forward - at least while the Coalition is in power, which could be for a very long time.

We are easily distracted by triviality. The Coalition are very experienced at distracting and entertaining the masses, especially when they've got such effective scapegoats like the Muslims to use as bait.

Fortunately for the government the majority of Australians don't particularly like the burqa - so therefore while we're expressing our indignation, Abbott is quietly pushing through loads of unpleasant legislation that we won't know about until it hits us in the face.

There are no plans to help our ever increasing unemployed, improve our ailing health and education services or maintain basic human rights' standards, although there are plans to make life more difficult for the weaker members of our society by taking away the little they already have and giving it to those who want more.

That has always been the Liberal philosophy though - the survival of the fittest takes priority. Pretty basic ideals, but they are appealing until it affects those Liberal supporters when they become needy.

Workchoices was a good example when it began hurting the children of Howard's support base.

Unfortunately you speak the truth Mantra.  That's the strategy.  Keep the populous amused with lower order issues while we sneak in the measures that are gradually going to drag you and your families down to slave labor pay and conditions, involve us in another long term war in the ME and keep us down with their vicious police state.  When you think how much discussion there has been in the media (and ergo the populous) about the burka compared to say the TPP (and the disastrous impact that's going to have on Australian laws, Aust sovereignty and the real generators of wealth in this country, working Australians) and gay marriage (sorry gay people) compared to climate change, it just speaks volumes about how trivial a part we play in this so called democracy.

Who ever controls the agenda for discussion is 50% of the way towards achieving their political goals. That's why we have a budget emergency.  Not because the economics bear it out but because the LNP put it on the table for their ideological purposes to serve their wealthy masters.   That's another advantage of a direct democracy. The people get to choose what issues are put on the table.  Do you think State and Federal governments would have even gotten off first base with privatisation if there had been a Direct Democracy. Would Gena have had the resources tax repealed in a DD. We need a DD and we need it soon

Abbott makes rednecks and bigots super mad.

Don't worry too much in 12 months with an election year on the horizon he will be back on board with the red necks like he had never left them.

I would think that having Abbott stuff up anything important is the last thing we want.

I personally think there should be a ban on red socks in parliament.
