The line between abuse and debate
Oct 1st, 2014 at 10:31pm

So it's becoming quite clear that some people are getting really annoyed and straight out p1ssed off about personal abuse and bullying on this site.

I am in no way making excuses for people who resort to petty insulting and personal abuse, but I can understand why some of these people are doing it. In some cases, they are egged on by arrogance.

I won't name names but I've observed a couple of people who adopt know-it-all smug and arrogant attitudes and give off this "I'm smarter, better and therefore much higher and mightier than you. You, are ignorant and stupid." -- when in reality it is just a clash of viewpoints and beliefs. If one does not resonate with another, a is automatically "stupid" "ignorant" and b is high and mighty.

They tend to follow forum rules and insult others in "politically correct" and "covert" ways, which, on the surface and in the eyes of say, a moderator, isn't breaking rules of any kind so it is allowed. But to the person copping the brunt of the arrogance, it is downright offensive and annoying.

My suggestion, which will not be considered or used, as what I've stated above is animalistic human nature aka "natural" is this: Keep information posted in debates as "factual" or "theory" only (regardless of whether the argument appears flawed, etc)  and do not give off this air of smug and arrogance, as it is just as offensive as personal abuse. It is just a cowardly form of personal abuse. Debate back just by posting a fact/theory based viewpoint without the air of arrogance or personal abuse.

Otherwise, carry on, but let me warn you that it is pointless to complain if all parties involved continue to use obvious personal abuse in arguments or covert personal abuse, going for the arrogance instead.

Good post.

But, you probably need to be careful with those sort of posts around here or you might end up like this:

Agreed, I have alluded to that before, simply the difference between calling someone a dope or questioning their intelligence or education.  It is the same thing, an insult, albeit the dope one is more overt but succinct.  The questioning on intellect when framed correctly will fly under the radar.

At least you've picked up on it, I'm just trying to raise awareness for some people, I actually feel empathetic to people who feel as though they should leave or get so angry about it when it is needless. It is needless for people to be bigoted and it is needless for people to take the bait and get stressed out about it.

Carl: I knew from the moment I typed this post up that I'd be inviting an all-out assault  Cheesy I probably will "get what I deserve" but like they say, I have broad shoulders. People on here don't get to me, I will admit that they irritate me slightly, kind of like when you step on gum or a bird sh*ts on your head. It's annoying, but nothing to get your knickers in a twist about. Easily overcome.  Smiley

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *
