India Mars mission cost only $74 million.
Sep 24th, 2014 at 7:30pm

Why can't we do what the Indians have done?
Where is the money for space research?

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/09/23/world/asia/mars-india-orbiter/index.html?hpt=h...

Quote:
(CNN) -- India's Mars Orbiter Mission successfully entered Mars' orbit Wednesday morning, becoming the first nation to arrive on its first attempt and the first Asian country to reach the Red Planet.

"We have gone beyond the boundaries of human enterprise and human imagination," declared India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who watched from the space agency's nerve center in Bangalore. "We have accurately navigated our spacecraft through a route known to a very few."

The staff at the Indian Space Research Organization erupted into applause and cheers after learning that the Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan, reached the planet's orbit and made history.

Before Wednesday, only the United States, Europe and the Soviets have successfully sent spacecraft to Mars.

With a price tag of $74 million, the Mars Orbiter Mission cost a mere fraction of the $671 million NASA spent on its MAVEN spacecraft, which arrived to Mars earlier this week.

Because Australia is run by Philistines who believe we don't need science and engineering and it is more important to create jobs for tradies whilst ripping everyone off on housing deals.

Im calling bs on the "only 74 mill " claim. Its in the Indian govt interest to claim a low price tag thereby avoiding some of the criticism levelled by people who cant understand that a country which cant provide its own citizens with  basic amenities like toilets and which lets a good portion of its people starve in the streets because of cultural racism is spending hundreds of millions on sending a rocket to Mars.

Hear hear Nail,
we're being left in the dust by India.
We're now a 3rd rate country due to a Luddite mentality.

actually
you display disorder with your twisting written truth..
envy, superiority complex ( this is ego based )
which really has no standing for you simply repeat..
this is forgiven,
however
you may go and consult other texts
and take the relevant advice for your affliction
or
release that which no longer serves your highest good
or
keep getting owned in any
and all ways by myself - the ascended Bobby
all options are quite ok

you are forgiven

you forgot that wages in India are a fraction of what they are in the US even for highly skilled people. The mere fact that India being only one of a few countries has built it's own cryogenic rocket engines on their own because the yanks and russians wouldn't supply them with the technology makes this story even more plausible. Not many countries can build rocket engines.

You have to face the facts that India is going to whip our arse one day. They will send all of the taxi drivers here whilst keeping all of the talented people for themselves because the penny will finally drop that even if you have qualifications you will most likely end up a taxi driver in Australia Sad

Yes - they spend $1 billion on their space program & the Mars mission was only a small part of it.
They are so far ahead of us.

how would an aussie plumber used to charging 200 bucks an hour in australia survive in india ? How could he justify charging 200 bucks to change a tap washer in India ?

But someone with the skills and knowledge to build a rocket engine would be looked after well in India but in Australia the only job he could get is driving taxies whilst plumbers prosper playing with sh.t in a pipe Sad

Our priorities are totally f.cked in this country Sad

Yes Nail,
they are also world leaders in Thorium nuclear reactors.
We have a large proportion of the world's Thorium but how much do we spend on research?

Thorium reactors can't melt down.
It would be a safe form of power generation.

what advantages are there in sending a rocket to mars. Does it feed people ? Provide medical assistance, vaccinations, clean water, toilets, any of these? Only a fool would suggest that a country which cant feed its own people without massive foreign aid is gaining anythng out of this except propoganda whch the useful fools are swallowng.
