Nationwide Rallies For Climate Action

Nationwide rallies for climate action      Smiley

Date
    September 20, 2014

Thousands of Australians will march, sing and form human signs to urge the government to take action on climate change.

Rallies are planned around the country on Sunday as part of a global call-to-arms for the environment.      Smiley

Organisers are expecting tens of thousands of people to turn up to the flagship event in Melbourne, where Australian Greens leader Christine Milne will speak.

GetUp campaign organiser Erin McCallum says there is clear enthusiasm for the rallies.

She hopes the message about the need for action will get through to the world's leaders, who are meeting at the United Nations in New York on Tuesday for a summit on climate change.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will represent Australia because Prime Minister Tony Abbott says it is important he stays in Canberra for Parliament.

He'll head to New York the day after the climate summit to attend a special UN Security Council meeting about terrorism.

Ms McCallum wants the world to pay attention to the actions of ordinary Australians on Sunday rather than the Prime Minister's snub.

"We're going to take his seat at the table and let it be known to the world that Australians do want action on climate," she said.      Smiley

"Australia needs to do its fair share in the global scheme of things when it comes to climate change."

People at the march in Melbourne will be encouraged to make their own decisions to help the environment, such as switching to 100 per cent renewable energy power providers or divesting their investments in fossil fuels.

In Sydney and Darwin, protesters will form human signs urging action.

Canberra choir A Chorus of Women will lead a singing walk around the National Arboretum with songs about peace and caring for the earth.

Thousands attend Brisbane climate march      Smiley

Date
    September 21, 2014

Thousands of people from across Brisbane have taken part in a massive global demonstration calling for climate action.

The People's Climate March is an international day of climate action, coinciding with the Ban Ki-Moon Emergency UN Climate Summit in New York, culminating in 2500 marches in 160 countries.

The Brisbane March was organised by The Australian Youth Climate Coalition and Getup as part of a global movement pushing for action on climate change ahead of an emergency UN summit on climate change policy.

"It's my generations future  on the line, that's why we're here in Brisbane calling on our leaders to protect our future, by moving Australia beyond coal and gas and investing in renewable energy," said Kirsty Albion of the AYCC.

"The people here today are on the right side of history and we need our leaders, especially Prime Minister Tony Abbott to side with us."

Maules Creek Campaigner Murray Drechsler said "coal expansion not only threatens our climate, it threatens our land, our water, and our communities".

"In my local community of  Maules Creek we've been fighting coal expansion that threatens our way of life and that's why today I'm standing with millions of people from all across the world to implore our world leaders to end the age of coal, and protect our communities," Mr Drechsler said.

Im surprised that that 100 people found the time to waste their time on a broken and debunked agenda.

Melbourne rally for climate change action attracts 30,000 people

Date
    September 21, 2014

Organisers of an international climate rally say the Melbourne leg of the global demonstration has seen 30,000 protesters converge on Melbourne's Treasury Gardens on Sunday afternoon.      Smiley

Australia's People's Climate March is one of around 2500 rallies taking place around the globe ahead of a United Nations summit on climate change in New York next week.

World leaders will meet on Tuesday where Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop will represent Australia.

Melburnians turn out to urge action on climate change.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said it is important he stay in Canberra but will head to the US the next day for a UN Security Council meeting on terrorism.

"This is a clear testament that Australians want climate action regardless of what Tony Abbott and his government are doing right now," GetUp! Campaigns chief of staff Erin McCallum said of the march on Sunday.

"The key message today is we're doing what he won't, we're standing up, we're taking action as consumers, as citizens, as Australians around the world and all around Australia today.

A 100 per cent renewable energy target and putting an end to coal mining were hot topics on the agenda at the rally, which ended at Treasury Gardens after winding through the CBD.

Professor Tim Flannery, who also addressed those gathered, said Australia had to take action before it was too late. "This is not some sort of ethereal issue," he said.

Among the international stars taking part in the event overseas is actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Comedian Andrew 'Lehmo' Lehmann spoke in Melbourne, and noted that, while New York got DiCaprio, "you get me".

Lehmann said those that had attended the rally were "the ripple that starts a tidal wave of action around the world".

Greens leader Christine Milne said Australia must send a strong message to Mr Abbott that the time for a "conversation" was over.

"We won't stand for it, that's what we have to convey to Tony Abbott and leaders around the world," she said. "The reign of fossil fuels is over, what we have to do is end the reign of the fossil fools who keep it going."

Labor's spokesman on climate change, Mark Butler, said Australia, being the largest polluter in the OECD per head of population, had to show the world it was still committed to its climate change responsibility.      Wink

"We have a responsibility, and it's in our national interest to be a participant in those global climate affairs so that we can grasp the enormous opportunities of a clean energy future," he told reporters.

He said various G20 meetings leading into the leaders' summit in November should include climate change as an agenda item.

"This is an economic, social and environmental challenge, and a very serious series of meetings without addressing climate change is simply missing out on that opportunity and that challenge," Mr Butler said.

Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

The main People’s Climate March rally was held in Melbourne on Sunday, with Victoria police estimating at least 10,000 attended. Organisers put the figure closer to 20,000, with families, young people and the elderly making the most of the sunshine to urge the prime minister, Tony Abbott, to do more to tackle climate change.

the supplied OP stated 30,000 which we know is ALWAYS wrong when it comes from the organisers.  and crowd estimates are pretty close to useless at the best of times and mean about the same.
