ONE NATION: When Sydney becomes Melbourne.
Sep 8th, 2014 at 11:42am

Remember when Sydney was the 'Entertainment' Capital of Australia?

The Opera House was the dead give-away. Leagues clubs were renowned for being packed out (more than the sports grounds), even with Melbournians who travelled further than the NSW side of the Murray River extravaganzas of Casino's and such.

Now though, its seems like it is more like Melbourne, especially with the Swans  Tongue and Giants and all things 'Sport'.

There needs to be a UPRISING against this oppression !!!  Angry

...Sydney 'Entertainment' is in the black  Wink

There used to be a time when you could cross a border and 'escape' for awhile.

But now, no matter where you go - its all the same
and there is no 'escape'.

People are different. If you have a strength of interest in sport and a weakness in gambling/partying, then
you would only want to give in to that 'weakness' upon sporadic or 'holiday' moments to ...be 'bad' once and awhile.
Exploiting 'cultures' is a problem.
The Crown Casino in Melbourne does such a thing, it exploits the 'weakness' of Melbournians and has ruined many a life and family.

You need to draw a line and that's why the States were invented.
If not - then get rid of the State system and make that ding-bat Pauline Hansen's One Nation dream become 'Official'.  Roll Eyes

Oh yeah, Melbourne voted the most liveable city in the world, then the most sporty, and just recently, now voted the most friendliest city in the world.....

Re: them pokie/casino venues, whilst the wealth of the state is increasing from them, the personal wealth of the average person is decreasing as a result.

In Victoria, some time ago, I recall we had no pokies, and it used to be a $5 bus trip up to the border of NSW to go to the pokies, a once in a while outing to go and gamble.

Now, just in our own close locality, there are about 3 or 4 pokie venues...far too many, with one of them, used to be a hotel only, and being among shops fronts, and too easy to walk into with pokies installed.

As the saying went, with Las Vegas, it was built on losers.

I kid you not  Tongue
In fact, it was a tie, with Auckland.
Sydney got a 5th placing.

Strange survey.

Melbourne is a lot of things, but I'd hardly describe it as a friendly city.

Frankfurt, on the other hand, is quite friendly yet they rank number 7 on the "World's unfriendliest cities" list.

Checked out the prices of tickets for the projected 'Dirty Dancing' musical, coming to Sydney, at $180 a ticket, think I'll pull out my old video and watch it for nix.

Those 'most liveable' city polls are a joke.
I remember Adelaide being the most consistent of the Australian cities.
I guess its who 'pays' for the title, which happens a lot in such things.
But Melbourne is the most 'populous' city in OZ, so I guess that says something.

I lived in Melbourne for 7 years.
I was lucky I got there a few years before the big cultural shift of becoming like 'everyone else' around the country.
The Conductors on the Trams were friendly and helpful and unlike Sydney, I found the 'Lower Income' society less angry, violent and more friendly ...unlike the Rich boys who seemed to enjoy the fact that they could afford to go to court for smashing my face in. It was a breath of fresh air, where in Mt Druitt you watch where you look, to go to Sunshine and people in flannies say "G'day" with a smile and walk on.

...but now, Melbourne is just like Sydney which is just like Melbourne, etc, etc.

It used to be great to go across the border and get a new stimulating different experience.
Australia has become ONE big boring nation  Tongue

I used to work in the heart of business capital of Melbourne back in the 1970's, and never thought it was ever friendly.
Business, shops, trams and trains, and that was it. It was very dull and stoic. With the exception of the Vietnam war moratorium demos, or other times, political activist uni students chanting "We want Gough"
Seemed war and politics, office buildings & business, expensive shops, was what Melbourne was all about to me many eons ago.

It was probably about a decade or so ago, I went in, from what seemed such a long time absent, and was amazed to 'feel' a difference.
Yes, it was more lay back and relaxed, people having coffee on side-walks, and generally, a friendlier feeling overall.
And shops had such amazing bargains, nothing like the expensiveness that it used to be back then for any workers.

Of course, the Crown Casino added a new dimension and the new exhibition centre also.

The changing faces of the city.

Oh, one more thing, that I noticed....what was evident in the later years of travelling on the train to the city, I noted all this graffiti everywhere, whereas back in the 1970's, there was non of it.
Something to do with the invention of the spray can?

When I was over in NZ, I noted there was none of this graffiti, and I asked why...the answer I got was, because New Zealanders live in New Zealand.

Oh that note, I loved Auckland, and surrounds, and would go live there without any qualms.
Orewa was the most friendliest place of all, very family friendly and welcoming feel.

Why do I get the feeling these studies are done by the local tourism board?

"Do you consider Malbun the friendliest city?"

"Yeah.. oh.. sure... 1000%!  True story!"

("did he say 'blendiest?"  Sort of most MultiCultural or something?  My hearing aid battery ran out....
