Well, these kind of things does happen in politics, it is a ruthless world. The man was promised free legal representation and a job, and at the end he had none, and everyone assumed that he was acting under direction anyway. So his reputation is ruined, no other employers would want to touch him within a mile. Of course, he is going to come back and bite as he can. But, what he does only served to confuse the situation, with little benefit to him, and even less effect on current sitting member of the government as these 'allegations' can never be proven.

If you are taking someone to court the last thing you worry about is their mentally health.
I don't think it would be the lawyers that told Ashby to drop the case as they would like a verdict in their favour to get the cost back that they already spent on the first court case and the appeal. So who else would like the court case to be drop and why?
I agree that he dropped the court case, and its certainly not out of worry about Slipper's mental health, since he did not worry about it when he first lodge the case.
But, I do believe, that its his lawyers - said to be acting on behalf of some individual / party advised him to drop the case probably because they would not get paid if they continue on with it.
