We should have more single sex schools. They don't have the added competition of attracting the opposite sex to incite them and tend to concentrate on other more constructive issues.

lol you could be right.. but even noticing my own daughters.. they have many aquaintances but only about 4 or 5 real females friends.. where as the blokes seem to have many mates....

I think that's just nature. Young men especially are programmed to have their clan of mates for male purposes, whereas young women are programmed to want to be the desired ones.
Disregarding what's perceived to be fair or unfair, that system has worked well enough through the ages.
It's nice to have somebody to trust, but as a general rule, you can only trust people to look after their own interests.

the men I know have mates that go back to school....

not so the females....they tend to discard each other...

in the animal kingdom only one male and a group of females...all caring about each other...

to watch gorillas is mind blowing...

.yet the human female sees other females as threats..get your hands off my man..

and I have known females that couldnt handle being friends with someone who had other [female]friends....

that wont make any difference mantra... I am so glad I dont have to face what mums and dads are facing today....when my daughter was in high school they went through a stage were they were saying nasty things to each other on the phone...like your ugly and so on....meant to be funny.. haha.. but we could hear it going on and put a stop to it... now with smart phone who the hell knows whats being said...or encouraged...we know how we feel if someone is particularly spiteful on here.... imagine if you were 14...

Actually we need to consider taking the focus off gender (of course, that will only happen when we as a species reach maturity, clearly we have a long road to go) and putting it more firmly on behaviour....

Pretty much everything written here about women and then about men actually applies to both genders.... It is all just behaviour....

We need to learn to either address said behaviours that we find dangerous and/or extremely anti social and, on the other hand, we also may need to consider developing a bit of a culture of live and let live. After all, if a behaviour is not threatening, dangerous (to self or others) or extremely anti social, is it really anyone else's business?

On the other hand, we can continue the mind numbingly stupid debate about he said, she said rubbish...

I've been posting to forums for many years now, and I don't think I've ever disagreed with so many points (in fact all) in one post.
I'm amazed that you managed to make it sound half intelligent. Grin

That is probably fairly accurate. If you've been brought up with a good father and brother/s and been respected by them, then you generally expect most men to be the same way. The same scenario could apply to males who've had neglectful or abusive mothers.

It really sends out a message that children have a better life when they've grown up in a warm, stable home with two loving parents. Pity it's not that common anymore.

My case is different from most in that I didn't meet my biological father or brothers until I was 20 years old. My experience with men prior to that was generally negative. Despite that, I felt a much closer bond upon meeting my father than my mother, but upon reflection I think that's because she was so emotional about it while he was calmer.

I've had many arguments on Ozpol about feminism and the equality of the sexes. My psych study  has made me realise I was mistaken in believing that men and women are the same. They are, of course, equally capable and there are always exceptions...but they're still different; the behavior of women often has different motivation to that of men. That should be celebrated instead of suppressed, I think.

I think you're right.

At my all-boys school we had almost a total absence of bullying. The cane ruled generously, of course, and that helped to keep the more boisterous boys in their box.

I went to a co-ed primary school where the bullying and taunting was relentless and nearly everyone was targeted. It all stopped instantly when I went to an all girls high school. I don't recall any bullying at all. Fortunately there was no corporal punishment, but the headmistress was very strict. We went there to learn and if we wanted contact with boys - we met them after school. High school was a pleasant experience.

My son made an interesting point last night, and this is coming from a young teenage male: He said-- "feminism seems to have its basis in the putting down and denigration of men"--. I think if young men now feel this way now, that feminism has failed in a sense, alienating men as if they can live without men.

Feminism doesn't mean now what it did in the beginning...it has become much more  self focussed for the individual woman. I can see his point. My son is not a selfish sexist young man and he deeply respects women...he has a mother who raised him alone and sister who is fiercely independent, he saw very little of his father growing up-

That's good to hear.  Smiley

For us, fraternising with the local girls was strictly forbidden, and a serious caning offence. There was paranoia amongst the parents about their boys getting the local yokel girls pregnant. This boarding school was right across the other side of the country from where most of the parents lived.

Perhaps he has noticed the "it's more about getting even than equal" mentality that has been slowly gaining impetus...

He also believes the only way male's and female's will have peace is when they learn to respect each others differences. Sound's entirely reasonable to me.

And I bet they did get some of the local girls pregnant too. I've watched so many shows about English grammar schools. They're fascinating. Did you ever watch that 7 up series?

The chasm between public and private school kids in the 50's and 60's was enormous if that show was anything to go by. It was probably similar here too depending on the area where you lived.
