lakemba exposed

Quote:
..............A few weeks ago a large crowd of mostly young men assembled outside the Lakemba Hotel. Waving black flags, the men chanted: “Palestine is Muslim land. The solution is jihad.”

I asked a non-Islamic local about that night. “You should see them when they really go off,” she said. “That was nothing.” Another non-Islamic woman said young men sometimes shouted “sharmuta” at her from their cars. She looked up the word online and discovered it was an Arabic term for prostitute.

Across the road from the hotel is the Islamic Bookstore, which bills itself as “your superstore of Islamic knowledge”. Three books caught my eye. Here’s an extract from Muhammad bin Jamil Zino’s “What a Muslim Should Believe”, a handy Q & A guide to the Koran’s instructions:

“Question 43: Is it allowed to support and love disbelievers? “Answer: No, it is not allowed.”   ............

Quote:
..........“Men’s perfection is because of various reasons: intelligence, religion, etc,” Hakim explains. “At most, four women have this perfection.”

Mix this level of ignorance and loathing with the Islamic community’s high rate of unemployment, and conflict is inevitable. The Islamic riots of 2012 ended up in central Sydney but began here in Lakemba and surrounding suburbs, where seething young Muslims formed their plans, including printing signs reading “Behead all those who insult the prophet”...............

The only think exposed was tired intolerance by the DT. There was an excellent rebuttal by an SBS journalist who actually knows what he's talking about.

Of course, a good way to understand people from different countries is to learn their language. A handful of Arabic and Bangla goes a long way to helping make my walk to Haldon St less terrifying.

Which country do we live in again? The author suggests we learn these peoples languages in an effort to understand them. See any flaw in this thinking? of cpurse we couldnt expect migrants to this country especially middle eastern ones to actually attempt to learn our language.

They need to learn "our language" in order to function, when dealing with the wider community but they don't, when dealing with one another.  Where I grew up, it was common to hear Greek, Italian, Serbian, Croatian, German and a few other languages thrown in, when you walked down the main street.  Many Anglo-Saxon/Celtic descended Australians for some reason fear people speaking languages different to the modified English they're familiar with.

My daughter often remarks that she is mistaken for English because she went to school in South Australia where words and letters are taught to be pronounced properly, unlike many other parts of Australia where words and letters are slurred and ignored.   It irks her that to many of her fellow Australians she's a stranger, merely because her accent is different.  Immigrants from overseas must feel similar, with the way many Australians treat them.   Roll Eyes

Typical narrow minded attitude thats still kicking from the 1960s...

Middle easterners *DO* learn our language. But learning a language is so much more than simply being able to converse, its ingrained in culture. We have moved away from 'assimilation' policies vis-a-vis new migrants - we have accepted the principles of cultural pluralism for making a richer and more productive society. Therefore it is reasonable to expect us "natives" to familiarise ourselves with the cultures we have willingly decided to accept as part of our society. Just as those cultures are expected to familiarise themselves with ours. And understanding the languages of these cultures is pivotal - especially for a culture like the arabs, where understanding their culture is inseparable from understanding their language.

Pap.
Not speaking the language is in no way enriching. And line that we have an obligation  to understand (ie accept) their culture and customs is outrageous nonsense.

No, old chap, it's perfectly decent cheese. Mormor made it herself - from locally sourced ingredients if I'm not mistaken.

I take exception to being told I need to learn the culture and language of migrants to this country in order that i may understand them. If they wish to live here they themselves need to fit in or fck off. I would expect no other attitude from the citizens of any country I myself wished to emigrate to.

Why do you assume they want you need to understand an overheard conversation?   If the conversation included you as a participant and it involved the likelihood of a sale, don't you think they'd be more than willing to accommodate you as part of it?    Grin Grin Grin Grin Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
