Regardless of the war ending 5 years ago, torture and slaughter is still continuing in Sri Lanka and this government knows it.

Quote:
Days before the United Nations voted recently to begin an inquiry into alleged war crimes committed during the Sri Lankan civil war that ended in 2009, a report was published containing allegations that systematic abuse, torture and sexual violence were taking place in the island nation as recently as February.

Testimonies in the report from 40 witnesses, who were recently detained in Sri Lanka and have since fled the country, detail alleged abuse by government security forces between 2009 and 2014, with more than half the cases between 2013 and 2014.

“What is most surprising is how recent the violations were. One witness was abducted, tortured and raped as recently as February [2014],” said Yasmin Sooka, an international human rights lawyer and author of the 110-page report, published with the support of the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales.

When Bob Carr said in Sri Lanka last July that the Australian Government recognises the great strides that Sri Lanka has made in its reconciliation of its peoples.

What did he mean then?

He spoke as Foreign Minister of Australia.

Bob Carr was talking as any diplomat would when trying to improve our relationship with a problematic country. He talked about the positives and not the negatives.

The security forces are over zealous and responsible for most of the ongoing atrocities, yet Abbott is allegedly handing asylum seekers back to them.

Quote:
But Sri Lanka has 5,676 “outstanding cases” of disappearances - more than anywhere else in the world apart from Iraq. Although the civil war ended in 2009, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government has kept the Prevention of Terrorism Act, which allows anyone to be jailed without charge or trial for up to 18 months.

AFAIC, it all comes down to context.

The torture/mutilation pics were relevant to the topic, if somewhat confronting.

Yes, Buzz could have linked to them, but how many of you would have bothered
to go and look? Not those he intended to see them, that's a virtual certainty.

But the porn was neither on-topic nor in context.

IMO, neither warrant a ban, but one definitely warrants a quiet word by PM.

You really think people these days don't know what death and destruction etc look like these days?
The photos were gross.
They were quite possibly totally unrelated to the issue of the topic.
There was no context linking them to the claims.
I'm pretty sure I saw that truck one way back in the years when the civil war was going on and as for that poor kid...  it was disgusting.  So disgusting it probably does fit the term "pornography" as in the pornography of violence.  Sicko bastard.

Well, no. I'm not.

But I maintain that the original pics were relevant, if confronting, as I said before.

I do not consider them to be in any way pornographic in this context, although
they certainly could be viewed as such in some other contexts.

You are welcome to disagree, but calling me a sicko probably isn't the best or most
accurate way to go about it.

Wasn't calling you a Sicko Bastard Kat... Roll Eyes

Fair enough, I retract my comment...   Smiley
