EDITED by FD to add warning to thread title.

Tony Abbott's Acceptable Levels of TORTURE in Sri Lanka

...

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's assessment of torture in Sri Lanka has been slammed by the federal opposition while his British counterpart insists leaders should not back away from difficult human rights issues.

...

In Colombo attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), Mr Abbott on Friday commented on reports of alleged torture by Sri Lankan security forces.

Mr Abbott told reporters that while his government
"deplores the use of torture we accept that sometimes in difficult circumstances difficult things happen"

...

Labor rejected the comment.

"The use of torture is never justifiable," shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus said on Saturday.

"There is never a 'difficult' situation where torture should be accepted."

He cited the Commonwealth Attorney General website, which states:
"the prohibition on torture is an absolute right. This means it cannot be limited or qualified under any circumstance"
.

Keeping conservatives ignorant seems to be working for Abbott.

Mark Dreyfus is quite correct in his comments.
However it should also be understood that we in the lucky country in all of our 244 year history have never been in a difficult situation where difficult things may need to occur.
And until that day occurs, Mark Dreyfus is correct.

So Mark Dufuss if some psycho freak had your kids locked up somewhere you'd just ask him nicely where they were?

If he'd hidden a bomb on a school bus somewhere you'd just ask him nicely where it was?

I assume that he'd just let them die..... Sad

It is what it is, torture is never a pretty thing, but if our government is compliant with another nation that is practicing this genocide, then we need to know. Knowledge is power. Can we talk about the government that we are returning these asylum seekers to? Can we discuss the possibility of our country aiding and abetting a country that practices genocide? Or should we turn a blind eye in the knowledge that we will never be a victim of such abuse?

This is the current DFAT warning:

Quote:
Sri Lanka overall

    Exercise normal safety precautions
Exercise a high degree of caution
    Reconsider your need to travel
    Do not travel

We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Sri Lanka at this time because of the unpredictable security environment.
Security forces maintain a visible presence throughout the country. Military and police checkpoints are present along some roads and road closures can occur without warning.
You should avoid all demonstrations and large public gatherings as they may turn violent or be a target for politically-motivated attacks. Police have used tear gas in response to protests.
In the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, which includes Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Kilinochichi and Jaffna Districts, post-conflict security force activity is ongoing.
In both the Northern and Eastern Provinces you should stay on main roads and pay close attention to signs warning of danger from landmines.
Foreign passport holders, including diplomats and international and local non-government organisation personnel, no longer require approval from the Ministry of Defence to travel to the north of Sri Lanka. However, individuals and groups intending to visit military establishments or High Security Zones or to meet military officials still require specific approval from the Ministry of Defence.
Pay careful attention to the type of visa you apply for. Travellers risk deportation if they engage in activities outside their visa conditions.
All regions of Sri Lanka experience outbreaks of the mosquito-borne dengue fever. Almost half of the cases in 2013 were reported in Western Province, where Colombo is located. See Health Issues below for more information.
Because of the prevailing security situation, we strongly recommend that you register your travel and contact details with us so we can contact you in an emergency.
Be a smart traveller. Before heading overseas:
organise comprehensive travel insurance and check what circumstances and activities are not covered by your policy
subscribe to this travel advice to receive free email updates each time it's reissued.

The woman-basher, and and most of his "government", are sociopaths.

As disgusting as his attitude is, this comes as no surprise.

The war is over but the torture and disappearing is current. This was evidenced by first hand accounts of Tamils that have had family members taken by the military. There is a reason that the UN and Hilary Clinton have said it is wrong to send asylum seekers back to Sri Lanka, a country where they may be tortured. I'm sure they are aware that the war is over too. Any more misinformation?
