Sex fiends from a secret facility strike again
Jun 25th, 2014 at 10:34am

EXCLUSIVE: GRADUATES of a secret treatment centre for some of Victoria's worst sexual predators are reoffending at alarming rates after their release back into the community.

The Herald Sun can today reveal that almost one in five of the intellectually disabled men released from the facility in Fairfield strikes again after returning to the community.

After completing their treatment, the predators went on to commit serious crimes such as sexually assaulting children, loitering in areas where children are present, making obscene phone calls to schools, assault, obtaining child pornography and escaping from detention.

Despite long histories as sexual predators, the men were treated in a therapeutic facility where they were taken into the community to test their sexual reactions on unsuspecting members of the public.

Today, the government confirmed it had no plans to close the facility or its $6.3m program and stressed that the re-offending rates offenders who did not take part in the program were much worse.

So the rate of reoffending by this demographic (intellectually disabled offenders) is normally 60%. With the treatment from the facility it is 18%. Yet they are saying this treatment is a bad idea?

Why are we so willing to spend so much time and effort to put these arseholes back on the street?

Sexual abuse of little kids is the worst crime you can commit in my book.

Well because it reduced 60% to 18%. As long as society has "timed" sentencing then it is a matter of harm reduction.

You will find that the offenders picked for this treatment would have already been chosen for the fact they were at a lower risk of re offending anyway. With programs like these they do not randomly pick participants so the recidivism figures are meaningless unless every single offender gets access to this program.

I don't believe paedophiles can be cured or even treated. They need to be locked up and kept away from society. Penalties for paedophiles are on average far lower than those for rapists. Why are politicians and the judiciary so frightened of adequately punishing these vermin?

Intellectually disabled or intellectually challenged?  (Derh - sounds like a new generation of politicians to me)....

This is frankly bizarre... and a direct result of government policy in having not very much in the way of institutions and so forth to cater to such things in society- the property was too good to hold on to when a quick buck could be made...

Idiots!

Without an assessment of the risk in the first place it is going to be hard to make comparisons, but that does not validate the complaints about the program.

Do you mean all paedophiles or do you mean those who have offended? If someone where to admit have those feelings should they be locked up?

As to the efficacy of treatment - it has a modest success rate generally, but a much higher rate with high-risk offenders.

Quote:
Meanwhile, the existing research raises tough questions about the relative danger child molesters pose to society. Their likelihood of being convicted for a crime after release is much lower than average for all criminals released from prison, and even for all sex offenders, at least in the short term, as measured by a Bureau of Justice Statistics study and others.

Clearly, you cannot lock up someone who has not committed a crime. Otherwise, half the world would be in jail for having fantasised about killing their boss or mother-in-law, etc. Get a grip on reality some time soon, eh? Roll Eyes

Go tell the 18% how happy you are about it.

I had to ask, many have suggested they should be locked up.

Aiming for 100% is impossible. To even get close you need a pervasive police state and assumed guilt.

There will always be victims of crime. Some of them will be repeat offenders. Unless we lock up / execute all criminals on the first offence, this will part of society.

There are ways of course to reduce risk.
