If you want to keep working till you drop, good luck to you.  As I have said, there are still some off us, that want to be able to have our retirement.  67 is more than enough.     Sad

The March in August rally should be huge if all those that have lost confidence with the Abbott government join together. Rallies will be held in all major cities and most regions.

Not the Asian engineering students I bet, they'll be in the library studying.

uni students marching in solidarity with pensioners is akin to the jews marching in solidarity with the Nazis.

cant the uni students see that the pensioners got free uni, free health, cheap housing and now want to lean on the younger generation and use their "grey power" to make sure every time their has to be budget sacrifice , its the younger generation who feel the pain.
The selfish old pensioner is the natural enemy of the uni student.

Any uni student who joins a pensioner rally is a full blown half-wit

Think carefully.
What are the pensioners rallying about.
they want their pensions indexed at a higher rate, they want exemption from any co payment, they want their discounts on power, water and rego to continue.

Good luck to them (though I think they've already been pampered enough).

Now , if they want all those things, then there will be budget pressures to find this lost revenue from other demographics within the society.

if the pensioners want to receive more and pay less, then other groups like uni students will have to pay more and receive less.

this is an indisputable mathematical fact.

So when HECS goes up and it is now to accumulate interest, this money the students are paying goes straight into the wallet of the pensioner standing next to them in the rally (and in pansi's case straight into an overseas shopping holiday).  (or down the throat of a poker machine).

Sounds a tad unfair to me.

Remember too that these pensioners got their full wage and now expect a full pension, whereas the uni student will be expected to forego 12 % of his wage and have it put into a super fund as it is the intention NOT to pay him a pension on retirement.

Sounds a tad unfair to me.

The neo fascists are at their happiest when they can set one group against another....divide and conquer.

They can easily march together with separate messages. unite and conquer!!!!....remember that one day those uni people will be pensioners, they don't want to work until they're 70, they have grandparents that they might sympathise with.

Uni students (exclude the silver spooners) live on the youth allowance, they know about living below the poverty line. They have much in common with the protesters.

Might ahve to take it from the politicians and some public servants....

Just saw somewhere some public servant got a half million dollar bonus.... good work if you can get it... I wonder if they are now considering back-paying for MY system they've used for over thirty years.....

Might one ask - WTF is a bonus for doing your paid job?

Retirement is over rated . Whats wrong with working til you drop.
is laziness and sloth really the "end-game", the "goal" you are working towards.
Same as this atrocious idea of "spending the kids inheritance"
I love my kids and i'll make damn sure I buy each of them a house out of my estate and i'm working towards having money to buy the future grandkids a house.
This is a legacy to be proud of.
I don't want my kids to see some angry old coot marching for "more goodies' while my kids face record HECS and record mortgages.
That is just the wrong message to send.
It smacks of greed and selfishness

Is this irony??
? don't know but it sure goes against his professed 'raison de etre ' of self reliance.. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Tongue

I'd be interested in the demographics of the pensioner rally and how many of them started their own small businesses, risked their own capital and employed people.
It would be my suspicion that most of the rent a crowd have never risked or created or innovated in their lives.
Angry, selfish people usually aren't made of the right material to be successful in the challenging area of small business....

says he.

So lets get this straight...  you don't actually know what you are talking about because you say things like...' I'd be interested in the demographics ..'  .... and   .... '  It would be my suspicion that..'.
So ? you DON"T KNOW ...you only 'OPINE'....you  'SUSPECT'...

YOU .. are obviously a wealthy person... in the context of the basic wage.. and if you CAN buy houses for your no doubt excellent worthwhile working children...

WHY?? .. why would you  ??

Can't they manage on their own..??
They NEED YOU to pay for their lives..???  WTF..?

you are even fixating on providing for your grandkids... !!  for goodness sake.
Jeez... Granddad must be pretty f'n full-on.

Ever thought of allowing your children to make their OWN WAY in life..??  No ..??
Glad you're not my old man...

You are an absolute control freak.  We hear from you... Your kids deserve better than what they can provide for themselves...   WHY?

THINK ABOUT IT.!!

You understand what we are saying eh??  That the basis on which our society,  our Country  runs...  is  extremely dysfunctional ...  it does not do what it should..

a capitalist democracy.. Grin Grin Grin  that must be an oxymoron..

well we now know it is a failed system...

what do we do about it...??

Buggered if I know..

...but there are lots of alternatives.. theoretically at least.

One wonders what the future holds.

I'd watch USA, whatever they do will decide whether we have to fall out with them or not. I'm not sure that the average Australian has the stomach for what that would entail. Americans are horrible bullies and there is NO DOUBT that there are all kinds of secret black lists. But we will need to face the possibility of withdrawning from the global system if we are to even begin to start to build some sort of decent alternative for Australians, in Australia with Australian resources.

think carefully,  do you really think withdrawing from world commerce will put Australia on the road to prosperity?
people like the products of cheap foreign labour.
they love the cheap clothes in Kmart made in china and india.
But they fail to recognise that labour is now a commodity traded throughout the world just like oil and wool.
If you want to build a more prosperous society, you will need to offer tradeable services that the rest of the world wants.
This is possible.
Asia wants our expertise in areas like
universities
engineering
finance
insurance
medicine.

We need to be, as the PM said "open for business'
We need to stop dragging down the "pie creators" and the "cream" with ridiculous tax structures like the , soon to be, top tax rate of 49%.
When Singapore and south korea offer rates around 9 to 10 %.
If we don't our labour "cream" will leave and there will be no one left in OZ but lots of angry pensioners protesting Wink Wink
When the politics of envy have destroyed the goose that laid the golden egg, you will be a greek economy.
You will have 50 % youth unemployment, you will have hospitals unable to treat you , you will have universities close because they cant pay the proffesors.

Rather than a rally of hate and envy, why don't the pensioners have a rally of hope , support and thanks.

A big rally to say "We support the movers and shakers and wealth creators"
"We pay homage to you for growing the pie"
"We demand the government do more to support our entrepreneurs and small business people , who have done so much for us" Wink Wink

There's no point in me getting into it with you, I find your views and debating style cartoonish and disingenuous. I don't think you begin to grasp the desperate reality of the world situation. You probably still watch corporate media and believe it. Roll Eyes

The pensioners should protest!

$150Bn going to the rich? Enough to increase pensions and NewStart!

Quote:
Tax concessions: Labor, Greens push for full-scale review

A Senate committee has called for a ''full-scale review'' of tax concessions offered by the federal government -
tipped to top $150 billion within two years.
[My emphasis.]

The Labor-Greens dominated select committee into the Abbott government's Commission of Audit found that concessions, from superannuation tax relief to private health insurance rebates, negative gearing and fuel tax credits, was costing the government nearly $115 billion a year and would spiral higher to $150 billion by 2016-17.

In its final of three reports, the committee criticised the Audit Commission, headed by former Business Council of Australia chairman, Tony Shepherd, for focusing solely on measures to cut government spending rather than simplifying the tax system and trimming some of the concessions available.

While it hasn't adopted all of its 86 recommendations, the government has implemented a number of the Audit Commission's suggested austerity measures, including a GP co-payment, a higher retirement age, cuts to welfare and rationalisation of the public service.

''The committee believes that if the government is prepared to consider a co-payment fee to visit a GP, which would affect the health of the most disadvantaged, it should be considering over $100 billion of tax concessions,'' the report states.

I think the illiterate reporter meant “tax expenditures” but good on him for writing this column.

$115Bn out of a total Budget of $400Bn is over 25%! Not small change!

Come on, Hokey! You said the age of entitlement was over, doesn’t look like it to me. Did Hokey lie? Looks like it!
