Rudd v Abbott in broken promises
May 15th, 2014 at 3:21pm

Did Rudd promise the electors he would:
- increase the public service by about 24000
- increase the number of govt agencies by the truckload
- overspend & waste on school halls
- endanger lives with insulation
- encourage 50000 boat people, drowning untold numbers

NO! Well he should have. Might have changed a few votes don't you think?

Did Abbott promise to rein in spending and return budget stability & debt level?

YES! And that's exactly what he's doing. What he said he would.
Not all of it is nice and some of it needs a review which it no doubt will get in the House of Review.

You don't need to be told.

If Tony had truthfully campaigned, as he should have seeing he would have seen the charter of budget honesty you wouldn't need to be posting such deflections.

But carry on Sad

I sure you won't watch or even read but

Well let's talk about core promises and non-core promises.
If your core promise is to restore budget stability, which most commentators agree is necessary, there are going to be promises in relation to specific budget sectors that will be difficult to sustain. Agreed?

All politicians make & break promises. That is their field of operations, their battleground. Which broken promises cause most casualties doesn't matter as much as who wins the war.

What he said he would
.

On the eve of the 2013 federal election Tony Abbott promised no cuts to education, health, or the ABC and SBS, and no changes to pensions. Fairfax Media looks at how those promises fared in the Abbott government's first budget.

Broadcasting

“...no cuts to the ABC or SBS.” (Tony Abbott, September 2013)

Treasurer Joe Hockey announced $43.5 million in cuts over four years in Tuesday's budget.

Education, health

“No cuts to education, no cuts to health…” (Tony Abbott, September 2013)

Tuesday's budget imposed an $80 billion cut to health and education spending over next decade.

“We are not shutting any Medicare locals.” (Tony Abbott, August 2013)

All 61 Medicare Locals will now be scrapped

Taxes

“No one’s personal tax will go up” (Tony Abbott, March 2012)

The Treasurer confirmed a deficit levy would be imposed on people who earn incomes over $180,000.

Pensions

"No changes to pensions" (Tony Abbott, September 2013)

Tuesday's budget confirmed age and disability pensions will fall behind wages growth from 2017 after they are instead linked to inflation.

Foreign Aid

“From 2014/15, the $5 billion aid budget will grow each year in line with the Consumer Price Index” (Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, January 2014)

The Treasurer revealed foreign aid would be frozen, leading to a massive  $7.6 billion cut over next 5 years.

Indigenous affairs

"The Coalition will continue the current level of funding expended on Closing the Gap activities." (Coalition policy document, September 2013)

Tuesday's budget cut $500 million through the consolidation of 150 programs.

Environment

‘‘ARENA will have over $2.5 billion in funds to manage." (Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane, November 2013)

The ARENA (the Australian Reneweable Energy Agency) has been axed.

"The Coalition will promote the use of solar energy by Australian families and households. It will ensure at least one million additional solar homes or community centres by 2020." (Greg Hunt, December 2011)

Tuesday's budget scrapped the government's Direct Action policy to fund rebates for the installation of solar panels and deliver 1 million solar roofs.

No lets talk about TRUST & Sticking to ones commitments which is what Tony campaigned on for 3 years.

Quote:
I’ve seen the disaster that this government has done for itself by saying one thing and doing another, Jon. I don’t want to be like that. I really don’t. I
f we do win the election and we immediately say, oh, we got it all wrong, we've now got to do all these different things, we will instantly be just as bad as the current government has been and I just refuse to be like that…
Before polling day you’ll know exactly what we’re going to spend, exactly what we’re going to save, and exactly how much better the budget bottom line will be under the Coalition.”

– Tony Abbott interviewed by Jon Faine, ABC Local Radio, 30 August 2013.

REPORTER: The condition of the budget will not be an excuse for breaking promises?

TONY ABBOTT: Exactly right. We will keep the commitments that we make.

I wonder if FD could make a specific  point of stickying that somewhere so we can always be reminded of it.  That is a bloody ripper, and adds further (but unnecessary) weight to my stand that Abbott is a lowlife lying reptile.
