What about reducing regulations on trading hours for business?

Also what do you guys think are the best ways to reduce the cost per employee for small business?

Sack half of them and raise the wages of those left behind, and then use a cattle-prod to get more production out of them.

Or better still, import slave-labour from the Philippines, and then pimp them as prostitutes on the weekends when they're not chained to the looms.

Talk about pontificating from an ivory tower.

Or more to the point, making a patron pleasing report. This Audit commission always was intent on adding some sort of credibility to the ultra conservative bumbling agenda of the Mad Monk. The Audit commission was never intent on being an objective investigation or reporting.

Even the most rusted on Liberal Party supporter must be concerned about this blatant misuse of government.

The knighthoods put Australia back 30 years. This will put the egalitarian flat Australian society back 200 years.

The Mad Monk maybe an ultra conservative idiot, but he would be one of the most dangerous idiots to have trod upon Australian soil.

The fact that he appears to be surrounding himself with the military is even more worrisome.

Did the  f.....g Audit Commission come up with some way to tax fresh air?

The Spanish Inquisition is going to look like Play School compared to this bunch of robbers.

The Liberal Party need to be careful with this; very, very, very, careful because this could be their ticket to oblivion.

Garbage as usual from roach. There is no indication business would hire more people. US has a low minimum wage, unemployment there is what, roach, 7% you said? Idiot!

I didn't say any such thing are you lying about me and what I say and think yet again?
How unusual for you eh. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
BTW we are not the US.
And more people in work means more spending and tax etc, etc, etc.... the exact figures neither of us would know and I'm not going to make psychic claims about things like you do all over the place.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Oh and if you want to see garbage start reading your own posts, heaven knows you refuse to read other people's.

We can get more people into work by reducing the standard working week to 35 hours a week.
maybe but some companies burn out employees trying to get the same work done in less time. or paying a select few OT to achieve it.

In any case, it is a lie to assert that government policy is ever about creating enough jobs to go around.
yet I didn't right?
Australia hasn't had full employment (unemployment below 2%) for 40 years and won't ever have full employment again.
Agree
The only way we can change that is a fundamental policy shift of no longer allowing the RBA to force people out of work whenever the unemployment rate reduces to 4%.
The RBA inflation point was selected at random...  instead of it being so low it should be  a tad higher.  Say 5%.

It's only one change of many that needs to come along at the same time.

Let's say you reduce the barrier to entry and regulatory burden on small and big business and reduce the cost of living (however this is done just for arguments sake) alongside minimum wage cuts/abolition, the idea I think is allow business to scoop up all of this unused unskilled labour and use it. The point of the MW going alongside that is to allow everyone to be competitive that way people over 21 can use MW jobs as a platform to launch themselves higher and hopefully compete for higher paying jobs.

I think concentrating on productivity is the key.

Increase productivity and wages can go up without increasing inflation.

So, spend: on education, science (incl CSIRO) encourage research and development, build a modern communications system. We are like fourth or fifth slowest—that has to be hurting productivity and international competitiveness!

You gotta forgive Geooooorge he thinks the NBN is the Holy Grail and a panacea for all the worlds ills. Cheesy

Don't you think the disparities between the states like wages and cost of living expenses is valid in an argument about the minimum wage?

But, don't you think that the argument (and I use that term loosely) connecting minimum wage to Government expenditure just a tad ludicrous (at the very least).

Don't you think a commission of Audit into Government expenditure has gone beyond its brief commenting on minimum wages at all.

Of course, in a legitimate debate about minimum wage, then yep, relative costs of living need also to be discussed, BUT so to do a myriad of other factors that may be mitigating (yep, that can cut both ways too...)

A direct quote from the AC Summary...

Quote:
Recommendation 27: Unemployment benefits
Unemployment benefits play an important role in assisting people back into work. Building on recent reforms, the Commission recommends a number of changes be made to improve incentives to work including by:
a. requiring young single people aged 22 to 30 without dependants or special exemptions to relocate to higher employment areas or lose access to benefits after a period of 12 months on benefit; and
b. increasing the income test withdrawal (taper) rate to 75 per cent for Newstart recipients and other related allowances

Audit Commission did get one thing right. Totally support it, so of course it won't happen.  Angry

Shame it stopped short of recommending an increase, everyone else is.

No, it's not a change that needs to come ... look at countries without a minimum wage and we are doing much better than most if not all of them. Why would we want to copy something thats failing elsewhere?

thats what happens when they appoint auditors from the business council of Australia .... looking after their memebers interests rather than doing the job they are being paid for.

Look, the people who did this commission of audit - they dont really have to worry about minimum wage themselves.   What would i say is that: okay if you want to accept people to take % of average wage for pension, DSP and minimum wage, then it is a matter of principle that Politician's wage should be pegged to the average wage as well.
