Argue that Australia's finances are going down the gurgler and they'll come back with....."but we're better than Somalia".

It doesn't mean because other countries are weird, unfriendly and racist that we have to be. Why not aim for higher standard of acceptance?

These figures are a decade old but interesting all the same. I've seen other research that shows unemployment rates amongst migrants but would need time to locate it.

Anyway it shows the white aussies aren't the only ones to fear on the streets.

Vietnam 2.7

Greece 0.5

Italy 0.6

Turkey 1.6

Lebanon 2.0

What does this mean? Well, people from the United Kingdom & Ireland, Greece and Italy were under-represented as a population in Australian gaols. But, those from Vietnam, Turkey, New Zealand and Lebanon were over represented. Vietnamese almost three times more likely than Australians, and Lebanese double.

So it seems that the comment was just a racist one, guided by ignorance-fueled hatred for anyone who isn't white.

For some people, accusing their own country or race as being racist makes them feel better about themselves. They see themselves as being smarter, more cultured, and beyond such foolishness, when really they are just smacking idiots who have no clue whatsoever.

Dislike of certain foreigners serves a purpose. It is to protect the group from perceived threats; or practices that will weaken group cohesion and the stability of a society.

Everyone singles out a group(s) in one form or another. No one steps outside this 'us' and 'them' paradigm.

While I agree some racism is abhorrent, other times it is necessary.
