Queensland LNP donor Karreman Quarries escapes prosecution for illegal quarrying after Deputy Premier orders legislation change
(see link for full article)
Quote:
A big donor to the ruling Liberal National Party in Queensland has escaped prosecution for illegal quarrying because of a last-minute change to legislation ordered by the state's Deputy Premier.

Karreman Quarries was this month facing legal action by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines over unlawful extraction of sand and gravel from the Upper Brisbane River when an amendment, slipped unnoticed into a package of reforms to the Water Act, retrospectively legalised its activities.

The change was not mentioned in the bill that preceded the vote on the amendments and even the Labor Opposition knew nothing about it.

ABC's 7.30 has learned the amendment was drafted after a meeting in April called at short notice by Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney at which the Karreman case was raised. The meeting was attended by Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps and senior bureaucrats.

The change to the law means officials are no longer able to prosecute the company. It also means the company's activities at Harlin, worth more than $15 million annually, can continue unimpeded for another five years.

The amendment specifies that the type of extraction of quarry material for which Karreman Quarries was under investigation "is lawful, and is taken to have always been lawful".

Emails to farmers at Harlin from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, seen by the ABC, show that officials had obtained a stop notice against Karreman and were gearing up for legal action to enforce it when the surprise amendment was made to the law.

Now we know why the Federal Coalition won't consider a Federal body with the powers of ICAC.

BULLSHIT No law can be changed without a bill for such to occur. Now after being exposed in support, labour lies about not knowing are pathetic!

Given that Labor hasn't got the numbers to block a bill, whether they knew or not is largely irrelevant. It is the conduct of the Queensland Government that should be scrutinised here, not minor irrelevancies involving the Opposition.

Something is rotten in the state of Queensland.

The current Chief Justice bids farewell to become the State's GG.  This bloke had utmost respect until days before his farewell of today (not attended by the incoming and pilloried Carmody...........) ~ he lost some lustre when he entered the political debate about his replacement Carmody.

The disparity is so stark.  Paul de Jersey, been a Supreme Court Judge since his mid 30s.....then Chief Justice of this State's Supreme Court to be replaced by a bloody pissant Magistrate.  Unbelievable.

The Premier's Man in charge of the Supreme Court, the Premier's man in charge of the CMC (our ICAC  equivalent) and the Premier's Man in charge of the Cops.

Charming.

Newmann is history in the making and I do hope whatever the make-up of the incoming Government is ~ they sack Carmody, Levey and Atkinson for being part of the Newmann grand scheme of things.

Queensland corruption fighter Tony Fitzgerald says Newman Government has "flaunted its disdain for democracy and good governance"

Quote:
Former Queensland corruption fighter Tony Fitzgerald has launched another scathing attack against the Newman Government.

Mr Fitzgerald says constant requests for interviews about politics in Queensland have forced him to make a statement.

The former corruption fighter says the Newman Government is using its majority to dominate debate both inside and outside Parliament.

Mr Fitzgerald also hit out at News Corporation Australia, accusing them of publishing biased reports favouring the Liberal National Party (LNP).

Quote:
"Queensland is extremely vulnerable to the misuse and abuse of power.

"There are almost no constitutional limits on the power of the State's single house of parliament.

"Unless there is an effective parliamentary opposition to advocate alternative policies, criticise government errors, denounce excesses of power and reflect, inform and influence public opinion, the checks and balances needed for democracy are entirely missing."

— Tony Fitzgerald

Mr Fitzgerald said it would be unlikely he would comment on the matter further, citing his wish for anonymity and privacy in retirement.

In the statement, he said the State Government has "flaunted its disdain for democracy and good governance" by attacking the independence of the judiciary and the state's Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC).

Premier Campbell Newman has been contacted for comment.

Last month, Mr Fitzgerald condemned the appointment of Tim Carmody as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, raising concerns about Judge Carmody's experience and questioning whether he has been too supportive of government policies.

Judge Carmody, 58, served as counsel assisting the Fitzgerald Inquiry into corruption in the late 1980s.

"People whose ambition exceeds their ability aren't all that unusual," Mr Fitzgerald said following the appointment.

"However, it's deeply troubling that the megalomaniacs currently holding power in Queensland are prepared to damage even fundamental institutions like the Supreme Court and cast doubt on fundamental principles like the independence of the judiciary."

Mr Fitzgerald also openly criticised changes to the CMC that allow the Government to appoint a chairperson without bipartisan approval.

"This debacle will adversely affect Queenslanders and ultimately end in tears for the Government, which has staked our future and its future on the whims of a few inexperienced, arrogant fools who seem unaware of the extent of their own ignorance," Mr Fitzgerald wrote in an email to the ABC in May.

Mr Fitzgerald ended his latest statement by saying Queenslanders have to decide at the next election which party will do the least long-term damage to the state.

We know.

LNP trails Labor in Qld: Newspoll

The LNP is trailing Labor by 49 per cent to 51 per cent, on a two-party preferred basis. That's a swing against the government of almost 14 percentage points since the election just over two years ago.

The quarrying was an oversight in the legislation which needed to be backdated.
No biggie,

campbells biggest problem is he is quite disliked and party headquarters have him in the seat of ashgrove which is full of inner city trendies, soy drinkers and associated left wing faggots , so I am predicting he wont even win his seat.

Well you are not exactly Nostradamus on that because most of the electorate of Ashgrove will agree with you. Clive Palmer is making jokes about Newman losing his own seat.....oh! how I love a good joke ha! ha!

The only thing Newman has got in his favour is if ballot boxes go missing, but Clive will be closely watching that.

Interesting, it will be inner city trendies, soy drinkers and associated left wing faggots who reinstate democracy and law back into Qld Government!

Unfortunately, one must admit that the inner city, creature - comfort seeking, intellectual do-gooder and hand wringer is a rapidly growing demographic.

As rural QLD becomes a sparse wasteland, there simply aren't the numbers of hard working folk who "produce' something for a living.

This is democracy in action.

The smashed avacado on gluten free bread, barista loving, blob of pale soft weak purile obese slothful leftard life form WILL become the dominant force.

Their vision for rural Australia seems to be one massive chinese and Indonesian owned and managed agribusiness with dotted Coal Seam gas stations. they see everyone joining them in inner city air conditioned  nirvana.

trouble is, they don't earn any foreign exchange dollars Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy.

I'm not sure what their business plan is....

borrow money from our new Asian mining and agricultural overlords and sell the grandkids into slavery.
This would seem about right for generation baby boomer (the soft weak whiney sooky bunch that they are)

Campbell Newman’s Government slammed in ReachTEL poll

PREMIER Campbell Newman is battling to save his political life, with a growing number of Queenslanders turning against his fight-prone administration.

A ReachTEL poll has revealed
up to 40 of the Newman Government’s 73 MPs face being turfed out of office at next year’s election, including Mr Newman
from his inner-city seat of Ashgrove.
