Your thread title & OP specifically mentions smuggling, a process that takes longer than the incubation period of the disease, so yes Ebola in its current form it is impossible.

Mutations of Ebola are a concern but not as much as a mutating flu. Filoviruses are relatively primitive as far as viruses go.

Ebola is highly contagious, which is correct. However, it has a short incubation period (7 days approx), and high mortality rate. And these are the reasons why it would always have only localized outbreaks. However, if it is weaponized by genetic modification, then thats another matter.

The infected "country shoppers" would never have made it here. Because most people die within 2 weeks of getting Ebola. And during this 2 weeks, they would not have the energy even to just walk.

Some of the better infectious diseases that you may want to use would be: TB, Syphilis, or just plain old influenza. But of course, a knowledgable person can counter that argument fairly easy as well. Wink

How about A'Queda making an Ebola bomb but mutating the disease so it's dormant for 6 months, all in a cave a Tarrin gap, disguising it as a boat, selling gifting it to an Indonesian fisherman who has a boat load of dirty camel jockies ready to go which then infects the navy personnel who return from northern patrols and infect their families who intern infect the wider community.

There are some serious diseases out there, and many that come to OZ via people smugglers come from countries that have these diseases....fact.

A good reason IMO to ensure uninvited people paying people smugglers to bring them to OZ are stopped....my opinion.
