If you were to put money into shares on Australian companies would you put it into bad companies losing money?

The bigger picture is whether anyone is concerned about the demise of Australian food production and manufacturing. Are we to become totally reliant on imported products which aren't subject to the same regulation our growers are?

There might come a day when we don't have the resources to feed ourselves in the event of an overseas disaster which contaminates or blocks supply.

Yes there are a range of issues here...

First one is wages and staff....

Two, supply of OS canned food being dumped in Australia...

Three, people here are NOT buying SPC products... the same people complaining that it may be shut down...

Four, we pay foreign aid to poor countries... billions... those governments then pay the peasant farmers a few miserable dollars from our foreign  aid to grow fruit then they need to get rid of it...

So it gets dumped in places like Australia...

So you see ... we have helped create this problem by dishing out foreign aid.... and Labor increased it by billions...

Vicious circle ...

NO... no you wouldn't...

You'd find profitable well run companies and invest your money there...

The Australian government handles tax payers money and we expect them to make wise decisions in how they invest our money....

The decision by the Abbott liberal government not to throw away hard earned tax payers money into poorly run unprofitable companies with greedy workers and thug unions is the right decision...

100% right...

It makes a difference having educated and qualified personnel in your political party... Labor should try it some time..

Why $19 million to Cadbury when their parent company made over a billion in profit last year?

Why $10 million to a football club (Manly Warringah)

A bit of consistency from the govt would be nice don't you think?

the region has received in the order of $1.2 billion of irrigation infrastructure in recent years specifically built around the fruit growing properties...

Another 1.8 Billion dollars was given to that area for flood relief a couple of years  back...

So that's 3 billion dollars in government assistance in that area in recent times...

There has to be a line drawn in the sand at some point because it seems that area is becoming welfare dependant...

How much would they want next year? And the year after that? Etc etc..

Arguments like - well, they got welfare so why shouldn't the rest of us? - and herein lies the problem...

Because all of this corporate welfare is getting headlines all over the country they are starting to line up one after the other with their hands out...

Not according to the starter of the thread.....guess you better tell it to pull it's head out too. Huh

And the rest that'll come in like moronic sheep and blame Abbott.

It's really funny watching the loops pour any semblance of political and historical acumen down the drain just so they can blame Abbott. Wink

Coca Cola Amatil own SPC, it is an American Company worth billions and billions of dollars.

Why then are they asking the Australian Government to put in 25 million to 'save' SPC.

If the answer is as simple as spending 25  million to make SPC a going concern again, then why doesn't Coca Cola write a cheque? They most probably have more money than our gross domestic product.

We were conned for years and years with GMH, poured in hundreds of millions and look at GMH pulling out now that the tap has been turned off. Nice to see that Tony Abbott is going down that track for us. He must, he has to, make a stand against this Multi National con job for our dollars.

Yes it is going to hurt but Tony Abbott has to make us competitive. SPC is already an American subsidiary.

Than heavens Rudd, Gillard etc have been kicked out. They would have decimated this Country with another term of office.

Countries served[edit]

Coca-Cola Amatil currently employs 14,900 people in six countries across the Asia-Pacific region, and had after-tax profits of A$558.4 million in 2012 calendar year on EBIT of A$895.5 million. Its share price has consistently outperformed the ASX 200 market index over the past few years.

The company is the bottler of Coca-Cola products in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Samoa.

Ownership[edit]

Coca-Cola Amatil is an Australian company, however The Coca-Cola Company has a 29% shareholding in Coca-Cola Amatil, as it does with each of its primary or "anchor" bottlers in the worldwide Coca-Cola system.

History[edit]

The company's Australian origins date back to 1904 as the tobacco company British Tobacco (Australia). Its first foray into soft drinks came in 1964 with the purchase of Coca-Cola Bottlers (Perth), and the company was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1972.

Soft drinks and snack foods gradually became the primary focus of the company, which was renamed Amatil Limited in 1977. It began to expand bottling operations overseas in Europe, purchasing a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Australia in 1982 and expanding into Fiji and New Zealand in 1987. A majority stake was purchased by The Coca-Cola Company in 1989, although today its ownership is 29%.

The snack food operations were sold in 1992, and European operations were spun off into a new company, Coca-Cola Beverages, in 1998. Expansion into Asia continued, though Filipino bottling was eventually sold to San Miguel Brewery and parent The Coca-Cola Company.

Coca-Cola Amatil's Managing Director is Terry Davis, and the board chairman is David Gonski.

CCA has facilities all over Australia, with key sites at Northmead (NSW), North sydney (NSW), Richlands (Qld), Moorabbin (VIC), Thebarton (SA) and Kewdale (WA).

From 2006 to 2011, CCA had a joint venture (named Pacific Beverages) with SABMiller to distribute its drinks in Australia. In 2011, SABMiller acquired Foster's Group and full ownership of Pacific Beverages; in exchange, Foster's sold its Fiji and Samoa

That's true.

Originally the British Tobacco Company (Australia) Limited.

Then changed their name to Allied Manufacturing and Trade Industries Limited, and then AMATIL Limited, and finally Coca-Cola Amatil Limited (CCA).

I don't think your average Australian housewife considers the demise of Australian food production and manufacturing whilst walking the isles with the shopping list in her hand.
Why?
She's too busy comparing the prices.
Cost is the primary consideration.

And the Aussie farmer has been getting driven to the poor house for only four months now eh. Roll Eyes
Try thirty plus years, and get the blinkers off.
As to the production workers, thanks to long term effective bargaining by Unions and their Labor flunkies has ensured that our goods will never ever cost compete with an imported one, and those same goods can never cost compete on an overseas shelf next to local product.

I think you have all missed the point here.

See, killing-off the baked-bean industry is all a part of Toenail's
'Direct Action' plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We all know that baked beans, when digested, release large quantities
of methane gas, which is what causes those thunderous 'bean farts'.

But methane also contributes to AGW, so getting rid of it is a great
initiative by Toenail, and one which should be loudly and vociferously
lauded.

And as an added benefit, the land which once held the bean farms
can now be dug up to provide a quick profit-fix for Gina & Co. Or
flogged-off to the Chinese in another classic 'sell the golden goose'
scenario.

Everybody wins (well, everybody but us average Aussies).
