Pope Francis denounces ‘trickle-down’ economics
Jan 8th, 2014 at 8:03am

What a pleasant surprise. I'm actually starting to like this guy. For a while now he has been warning the world about the tyranny of unfettered capitalism and recently had this to say:-

"Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.... Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting.”

The trouble with 'trickle-down' economies, is that the trickle dries up
once it reaches the middle-class.

The working class and those on welfare always end up with nothing.

He could be speaking from a personal point of view, not as a representative of the Catholic Church.

He lived a frugal down to earth life before he became the pope.

I am wondering when he will start to offload some church assets to help the poor though. Maybe he is.

Whilst not a big fan of the vatican (they do seem to surround themselves with the trappings of the elite), i , do find, the current pope to be quite sensible on a lot of levels and he may be able to slightly modernise the church.  to do so would require some sort of miracle though Wink

Or just as its about to get to us a recession hits and the $$$ elite screams for a greater share of the pie to stimulate investment.

The money tricles down into tax havens. Meanwhile—the country goes bankrupt!

That's a pretty extreme interpretation of trickle-down theory. Sounds like the pope is building a strawman.

Yup - good old Catholicism as a social force has reared its ugly head once more and the Church Militant is on the field....

About time, too.

Now - I'm no Catholic though my mother was - but there has always been a strong element of social justice in the Catholic Church and any other church worth its salt... and it is good for the church and the people for the religious heads to raise issues that impact on the majority, primarily in a negative way, such as piss-poor economics leading to endemic poverty for many to favour a few.

It has been a  source of amazement to me that churches can trim their sails to the prevailing wind so much - and like Labrador here - lost sight and track of their prime aim in life - ordinary people.

It has also been a source of amazement to me that 'communist' governments tend to hate the very forces in religion that advocate most strongly, in many cases, for the ordinary person.

That's politics for ya!

Good on ya, Frank!  Give it to 'em!

Francis is spot on. Trickle down never works. It is just a theory expounded by the rich and powerful to ensure they stay that way.

Pope Francis seems like a fine man, but where did he do his Economics/Finance/Accounting degree?

The man is the actual embodiment of Longy's rant here

Quote:
the religious people are the ones that INVENTED welfare.  we are the ones that STARTED almost every school and university on the planet.  We are still the ones that run virtually every private school and every private hospital.  Social welfare and housing support is largely done thru church charities.  And this is all paid for out of Christians AFTER-TAX income.

we give money to the poor.  we give them clothes, houses and teach their children.  and what do you do?  sit around and bitch about it and then makes excuses for killing the inconvenient by products of your own lusts.

And guess who was the 1st to bash & denounce the Pope and his comments,

THAT'S RIGHT,  RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVES, the ones that condemn & pass moral judgement from high on the mount

Nah - those are the nouveau riche - for a short time if they are not careful - they are the ones who work - the working class here have no work any more - they just lollygag in the warm sun drinking beer and surfing all day..

You know - just like boys in schools these days, men in the Labor party, all those dole bludgers and DSP recipients.... all lollygaggers, lazy drunks and gamblers on the public purse....

I hear Tony, Amanda, Joe, Clive of Indian Investors and Gina are working their little butts off to find them all jobs though.... or to figure out how to make the bastards pay for theie survival money....

Ask me again what's wrong with my country these days... I'm looking at calling the Grappler Party something like the Sanity Restoration Party - might bring in some of the youngies who think it's a music store thing..
