Would it be right for the Govt to make some one else do that job for no payment whatsoever against their will?

Your actions are charitable.

The latter example would be slavery.  Being made to work for nothing by force is slavery.

The government doesn't do that, but plenty of private businesses do. Unpaid overtime in Australia costs the Australian economy about 70 billion dollars a year.

Who benefits?

Now John, you're getting it more refined of what I had thought Bob Hawke really meant at the time.

There is no refinment, and what you thought he said is irrelevant. He said what he said. It's on the video on the previous page if you want to hear it again.

"By 1990, no Australian child will be living in poverty."

I think the 'meaning' of that statement needed to be refined moreso. It's what I thought he "meant" that was irrelevant.

So I ask, do statistics include the number children (or miners) of impoverised families for that statement to be effective, or just the main breadwinner and/or the unemployed parent of such child?

don't care what the statisitcs say ... you seem to have misunderstood my position ... I'm not debating the merits of his comment, or if he included unemployed etc, although I think the statement speaks for itself ...

Swag accredited Hawke with saying NO AUSTRALIAN WILL LIVE IN POVERTY ... I merely pointed out the error of Swag's ways.

No worries, but that's right, Hawke didn't say "All Australians" and probably what many had thought (or hoped he meant)......so that is what needed highlighting, I did the exact wording of Hawkes statement in my last post. Hence, I thought it was quite clever, re: 'Australian children".......just how astray that comment could be taken.

Everyone's thought processes work differently, I was just suss when I heard that back then.

OMG are you saying that its OK to cheat people of their pay for the overtime they do because "Overtime denies the unemployed jobs". Why didn't you think of that before you made them do the overtime? Like I said the bludging culture is rife in the business sector in this country

For more split hair ends....Look at the statement again, Hawke said "by 1990" and not actually "from 1990"  Wink

It wasn't clear at all.  Your post was immediately after this from Bam

Me thinks your bludging mindset kicked in before you had time to conceal it.  Sorry mate but that's what it looks like.

Management can always employ more people and cut overtime nobody said there was any problem with that approach.

By the year 1990 no Australian child will be living in Poverty!

But Poverty - that small salt mining town just to the north of the Tasmanian border - was closed down in 1989, and is now a ghost ship town...  Pirates of the Tasman - Ghosts of Industries Past.....

**stands on sweeping vista plateau overlooking vast expanses of Inner Australia....

"One day, my son... all these ghost mining towns will be yours!".......
