It's not the baby's fault it's a myna bird. Herbert is acting humanely. Until the baby can fly - the parents haven't got the capability to retrieve it. They don't pick them up by the scruff of the neck like other animals do.

It probably does need to be euthanised but hitting a healthy animal over the head is not a job for the faint hearted - carbon dioxide isn't a quick fix either.

Take it down to the local vet and they'll put it down, although a needle in the gob would be a painful ending.

You could keep it as a pet. They are great imitators and it would be easy to teach it to talk.  Smiley

It died.

The parents hopped from branch to branch all day long a few feet above where I'd hung the cage ~ but they never came down to feed it.

In the morning it was dead.

anyone I know hates indian myna birds... they claim they do more damage to our natives than wild cats..anyway to each his own...I am not sure what WIRES thinks about these birds.. anyone Know?

From a distance I can kill a thousand Myna birds with a couple of mortar bombs, but I couldn't kill one of their cute little babies while it was looking at me with its big blue eyes.

herb it died a lingering death......think about it.. Roll Eyes

maybe mum and dad pushed it out of the nest.. its what animals do if they know one is sick..... its natures way.

Thanks for that cods. I'll think about it. I might even dwell upon it. Maybe make it my 'Thought For The Day'. Let myself become consumed by the thought I caused it to have a 'lingering' death. I'll take the phone off the hook today and sit in a dark corner stark naked with a birch rod to keep me company while I chastise myself for causing so much misery.

Did I tell you 'Happy New Year', cods?  Cool

Correct. But they fussed all day long, and their screams got louder every time the cats wandered close to the bubs.

I think you will find the correct procedure  endorsed by the RSPCA is Cervical dislocation or my preferred method, blunt trauma.
A piece of semi rigid poly pipe avoids any jarring of the hand and a quick death to the bird.

Cervical dislocation is a bit risky on birds like lorikeets so blunt trauma is the way to go.

Chicken farmers kill their birds by rotating them like you do with a billy-can when you're making tea ...

Personally I prefer the axe.

If its a lorikeet hopping around on the ground, an axe is a bit difficult.

Just for you Herb we could paint the poly pipe in a fluro colour and you can pretend its a light sabre.

Just use a branch lopper.

Problem solved.
