After you pay for 60 prescriptions, do you start getting them for free?

I'm on ten a day... $60 a month - medications payment still $3.40 a fortnight I think - or less than $10 a month... Queen Julia the Red's government raised the cost progressively so we could 'have a viable PPS system' - she and mates, of course, pay nothing out of their fat retirement package...

Yup - get it out of the poorest in the land regardless of how and why they got to be that way.,... (hint - government policies or lack thereof)...

You're supposed to go on the free list when you reach $360 in cost.... that'll go up though.... bet on it... can't afford it, wept the politicians....

Sounds great!

Anything that adds to the queues and waiting-times, and the workloads of our
already-overworked nurses at our already-overcrowded ERs simply has to be a
top idea.   Tongue Tongue Shocked

Be thankful our health system is NOWHERE near as expensive as that which exists in the US, even with this $5 fee. The Yanks must look upon us with envy. Having said that, this fee probably would not be necessary if Swan knew a single thing about being a Treasurer.

You forget the record hike in private health insurance premiums. Something has to pay for the simian’s ridiculous PPL brain fart, I guess.

You will also find all these austerity moves will increase the deficit and unemployment. If they really want to reduce the deficit—just undo the last 2-3 tax cuts for those on the top two brackets. The alternative, austerity, won’t work and will cause untold misery.

The GST could also be broadened and increased AS LONG as those on the very lowest incomes are overcompensated, else it just acts to reduce private sector demand.

When one looks at what mindless, poorly targetted and implemented, often
unnecessary austerity measures have done to the UK, one really needs to
question the sanity of anyone implementing or supporting similar moves here.

And that was due to the costs incurred by the ALP

If it's so difficult then why did lefties scare Australians it would increase?

We are not talking about "ease of change" but rather the rhetoric used by the left

no, we are talking about charging people to go to see a doctor .... keep up gumpy. Anyway, to your other point,

The only reason Howard made it so difficult to change the GST was because of the rhetoric from the left .... if there wasn't a fear of increasing it at every turn he would never have put in so many safeguards against it.

Yeah.

Through the GFC with, in relative terms, hardly a scratch.

A debt-level that's the envy of the developed world.

And an AAA-rated economy with positive growth through and post-GFC.

Which you lot are hell-bent on trashing.

Which governments were responsible for this? Labor governments. Chifley gave us the PBS (and successfully passed a referendum to get it), Whitlam gave us Medibank (while dragging the Liberals kicking and screaming through two Senate rejections, a DD election AND a joint sitting to do so), Hawke gave us Medicare (after Fraser took away Medibank). What do the Liberals do? They try to make health care more expensive whenever they get in so they can manufacture a market for the private health insurance industry.

Quote:
The Yanks must look upon us with envy.

Only the people, if they find out about it. The Republicans and the pharmaceutical companies consistently put pressure on Australia to wind back the PBS because to them it is a dangerous idea that Americans must not see. And of course the Liberals would be complicit if they thought that they could get away with it.  Angry

Having said that, this fee probably would not be necessary if Swan knew a single thing about being a Treasurer.

The Liberals would find any excuse to wind back public health care. They did it under Fraser, they did it under Howard, and they are going to do it under Abbott. Finance has nothing to do with it, it's just a convenient excuse.

Funny, that! Every time we have a Labor government, they go on a Jihad against Private Health Insurers and their members because they take patients (and money) from the crumbling public system that is underfunded and under-resourced.

Comparing our financial situation to Greece, for example, is sheer lunacy. That's what Labor did numerous times to justify their unjustifiable spending and borrowing. Hardly a scratch, you say? I don't consider a debt under Labor nearing half a trillion dollars to be "hardly a scratch". I call that reckless incompetence on Swan's behalf.

yes you do.. when you have reached 200......and I get them free every year...I am not complaining about paying..I am just pointing out A FACT..of LIFE...

my grandmother alive when the National Health system started in the UK>.took real advantage.. more sets of false teeth and glasses than any one person should have had... but it was  free and by golly she wanted her share.. it didnt take long before they realized if its free a lot take advantage... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

a lot of people that get bulk billing would go and go and go..maybe if there is a small fee that would put a stop to it..

I do not BELIEVE IN FREE... nothing IS FREE.....we should pay for everything..even in a small way..because it makes us think twice if we feel the urge to take advantage...

for anyone to complain about paying $5 a visit.. is pathetic..I do not complain when I go in with a handful of scripts..because it all helps in a small way...one day they will cost $10 each..so be it..if I had to pay the full price I could not have them...so I realize someone else is paying for the difference..
