Time for a very large proportion of our populace to get some tough love & re-prioritize their spending.

Watching the news report on the boxing day sales, my attention was caught by a couple of 20-somethings gleefully telling the reporter that they were there to max their cards out and would probably spend around $3000 on clothes & makeup.

My first thought was - geez girls, have a thought about next year.
My next thought was - go for it darlings, whatever you spend it on I'll probably make a few bucks from it on the stockmarket.

If most people can piss away $3000 on frivolous stuff like this, it's difficult to defend the proposition that Australians cannot afford an increase to taxes to get the budget back in balance.

So over this festive season I've read report Australians have spent 29.6 Billion $$$ on gifts

http://finance.ninemsn.com.au/newsbusiness/aap/8760421/australia-to-spend-29-6-b...

Another 1.9 billion $$$ on boxing day sales

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/news/boxing-day-sales-set-to-hit-an-a...

And although I cannot find a link have heard we also spent 11 billion $$$ on Christmas Food

Totaling 42.5 Billion $$$

That's $1847.82 for each of our 23 million citizens.

So in 2014 I don't want to read here or in any newspaper, hear any mealy mouthed pollie cry that Australians are struggling with the cost of living, cannot afford a few measly $$ to fund the NDIS or that the Carbon Tax is forcing the large majority to freeze in Winter, that families need the compensation to remain if the tax is repealed.

BECAUSE FRANKLY IT'S BULLSH!T Angry

It's obviously not how much Australians bring home but what they choose to spend it on.

Time for a very large proportion of our populace to get some tough love & re-prioritize their spending.

you presume the figures are true...  family of 6 having spent nearlt $12,000????  not only do I not believe it, I find it near impossible.  When my kids were young and I was earning triple the annual wage I spent lavishly on Christmas and yet never went anywhere near that amount so what does the average income earner spend?

this feels like an estimate based on a guess which is extrapolated from a few sotres in Toorak and the north shore.

Not everyone can afford a ps4 and 60 inch TV for christmas.  Those that can drag these averages up.

You don't see me crying poor either.

Oh & not that it's any of your business but the 60 inch telly took me 2 years to save for.

about 10 years ago I paid $5000 for a big screen TV which the nearest equivalent now can be had for $600... and its hi-def.

all it all... don't invest in tech

Not at all

In fact I'm here more often than not arguing for those at the bottom to be given a fair go.

However most of our liberal posters seem to think a family on 200K need assistance with Private health, Child care etc.

As I said to LW a couple of days ago 80K for a single & 150K for a couple should be the cut off point for ALL government assistance.

That way we ALL end up paying less tax & the tax that we do pay will be used the way it was intended

Also, how the bugger do they calculate 11 billion on "christmas food".

Like I said I heard it on an AM interview & cannot find references.

How they calculate it would be to look at the food spend in say Aug then the food spend in Dec Minus Aug from Dec

well that's my layman's idea.

I don't have a problem with that as long as the largesse for everyone else is severely curtailed as well.  cut welfare dramatically, period.  then cut income taxes etc in response and watch the economy take a rise as spending increases on the back of extra income.

I raised 4 kids on the back of next to no govt welfare and they didn't suffer.

There's a difference between wealthfare and welfare.  Remove all wealth fare.  Then start to cut taxes from bottom up when circumstances allow it.

Is his real intent nothing more politically petty than to bag the ALP for his having to scrimp......to save to pay for gas/water/electricy even though he wants us to believe he was an IT/www guru for 30 years, and there would be none of them who would have to do said scrimping.

??
