Fact Check consulted two researchers from the University of Queensland who specialise in data analysis, Dr Angela Higginson and Jason Ferris. They modelled the data and concluded that: "There has been a statistically significant reduction in the number of arrivals since the Coalition took Government... But it sits as part of a trend in reductions of arrivals that began with the last government. So in short, Mr Morrison is right, but he's not taking context into account."

The researchers say the comparison period of before and after Operation Sovereign Borders used by Mr Morrison misses the point, "because this trend began back in July and there is no sign that the election of the Abbott Coalition Government has had any impact on arrivals whatsoever".

They say over the past five years, there have been several changes in the trend of asylum seeker arrivals, the most recent change being in July 2013, "
but that there is no evidence of any further change in trend since the election

The verdict

There has been an 80 per cent reduction in asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat in the comparison period outlined by Mr Morrison. However, the data shows
the number of arrivals began to slow significantly under Labor, soon after Mr Rudd's regional resettlement arrangement was announced.

Love the bit I highlighted about the "researchers". Love how they say that the reduction in boat arrivals began with the previous government. Is that the same government that practically invited in 50,000 dole bludgers on more than 700 boats while over 1,000 people drowned and the budget for dealing with this issue blew out by billions of dollars from what was originally a <$100m per year policy? It's this simple: Labor's incompetent attempts at stopping the boats after inviting them was simply pathetic and it's only now that there has been a change of government and a toughening of our governments' stance on this issue that the boats are stopping. Lets be clear - Labor was all over the place on this issue: for onshore processing and then for offshore processing, for East Timor taking people and announcing it without informing the East Timorese, for sending people to Malaysia's worst prisons prior to being given an almighty slap-down by the full bench of the High Court (but not before committing us to taking thousands of people from Malaysia). Under Gillard, the ALP had more positions on this issue than one of Craig Thomsons' prostitutes would in a one hour session with him. Time to face up to the facts, leftards. Abbott said he would stop the boats and that is what's happening - not instantly, but certainly light years faster than any plan Labor had come up with! Smiley

Can you only parrot the same thing over and over? Read what it says. Then try again.  One deals with research and data. The other comes from ranting from people like Akerman. Puhlease.

Indeed, the most punitive legislation is introduced by Labor, check your history.  But in reality country shoppers never took Labor seriously however when the Libs get in you can be sure the message got out, this govt is serious and when it says bugger off to PNG they probably mean it.

Labor had no credibility.  And they never really believed it, it was an electoral ploy for Rudd appealing to his target demographic of luvvies.  When the country shoppers started he got the message from his ministers and polls that apart from the luvvies, not even immigrants like the idea of forced immigration.

I give the credit to Rudd actually, he was the one who legislated a scheme so cruel and draconian when the word filtered out, customers took notice.

Lefties are happily taking the credit for a Labor initiative and I am happy to let them have it.  So yes, angry face and a commitment perceived by potential customers to enforce Rudds plan.

What policies has Morrison introduced to stop the boats???

Huh Huh Huh

Indeed, the most punitive legislation is introduced by Labor, check your history.  But in reality country shoppers never took Labor seriously however when the Libs get in you can be sure the message got out, this govt is serious and when it says bugger off to PNG they probably mean it.

Labor had no credibility.  And they never really believed it, it was an electoral ploy for Rudd appealing to his target demographic of luvvies.  When the country shoppers started he got the message from his ministers and polls that apart from the luvvies, not even immigrants like the idea of forced immigration.

yes, all asylum seekers stopped because morrison made an angry face and said no.

Do you people even listen to what you say sometimes? It's just hilarious.

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

No lefty is taking credit for anything because lefties have a brain and don't go on about border protection as if it's our only masturbating material.  Lefties don't infer from one source a generalization about everything, and lefties think spending $6billion to process 50,000 people is extreme considering the UNHCR's budget is 12million.  Hence the left wants to see a solution that actually helps people, and doesn't denigrate people for doing something as a result of events outside of their control.

But I'm happy you recognise that making angry faces doesn't amount to actually doing anything other than making angry faces.
