I hope Cosgrove declines any invitation to take the job on.  He is a military man and nothing more than that.  Bryce was Governor of Queensland and is a Lawyer.  Cosgrove has no experience which will assist him in such an important Constitutional role.  It would take some shine away from his career in the Army as well.  He does not need the money, nor any additional prestige.  Why would he want the job?

What experience do you think a GG requires? It's a do-nothing job anyway.

The cost of servitude compared to the price of freedom..

Im a Republican and a proud Australian patriot through and through so I'll leave the sniveling and grovelling to their English masters to one term tony and his cheer squad.

If anyone would rather swear their allegiance to a foreign power rather than to this country they should go to the airport and leave.

"servitude", lol. Yeah, you gotta watch those Redcoats on the street corners smashing us Aussies into line with their rifle butts.

Rough estimates Skippy of a first decade of a republic

First federal plebiscite - $100m
Second Federal plebiscite. - $100m
First 3 Presidential campaigns (elections not needed now) - $300m
Changes to Air Force, Army regiments flags, emblems, photographs and portraits of Presidents,  coins,  decorations, medals, additional salaries and super of Presidents and staff - $1.0bn

General Peter Cosgrove is tipped to be the next GG

My question is - if Australia was to become a Republic - what is the cost of changing everything over?

It's like changing from Android to Apple

I think the Gen would be a good choice...about a Republic.. let em have it as far as I am concerned.. it will be so interesting to see what differen ce it makes to their lives... Grin Grin Grin Grin.

the cost will be enormous..but we never get told that do we???
but theres a few out there that feel threatened by the Queen.. so let em have it....

they may even bring in a RIGHT TO BARE ARMS....to the constitution..lets face it.. the last referendum they were going to make 64 changes to the constitution yet we didnt have a clue what they were???? Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

The biggest single cost would be holding the referendum itself.  I would be interested to hear where you get the 'enormous cost' from.

For the last referendum the '64 changes' (from memory I thought it was 74, but that's of little importance) were removing references to the Queen and the Governor General (and consequential changes because of the removal) and the process for appointing a HoS and possible removal of the HoS).

You could have just written no idea, it would have said the same thing as everything you wrote is your opinion, not fact. As for coins, I love that, you all think the queen is going to live forever and we will never change our pissy coin, which BTW is being gradually phased out anyway as a result of people now using cash less and less.
Who said we have to change Army airforce navy regiments and flags??? Please explain? Canada didn't. Again I stress, I am not a republican, I just don't swallow bullsh it.

Assuming the referendum was held jointly with a Federal election the costs stated above would be substantially less.

I cant see the cost of photographs being a big deal.
Existing currency would still be used and replaced over time (the same as it is now) with changes (as happens now).
I cannot see  why a HoS (President?) would need more staff than the GG already has.
Changing the Aussie flag is a different issue but I see no need for a change.

Thanks for the troll, princess, I see as usual you have nothing to add to the debate but abuse.

From the pro-Republicans postings it seems we are a slave nation

I am indifferent either way

The classical case is Hong Kong

Has Hong Kong really changed since falling back into Chinese hands?

How would the laws reflect the change?

Do we say that the new Republic will adopt existing laws?

We we have to change everything that says "Commonwealth"

Are we excluded from CHOGM? What is the cost of that?

Trade deals that are signed with "the Commonwealth" - does that need to be changed?

My favourite argument is from those who want to change the flag because it suggests Britain is the Master of Australia.

Who here thinks Hawaii is owned by Britain?

I have a small bias on the Republic side of the debate, but I am not overly fussed about it.

What I have very strong feelings about is the anti-republic zealots that use distortions, lies and completely irrelevant points to argue their case.

Yep ditto. When the anti republicans start running out the " doh we have to change all the money yudda yudda" you can see they have no concrete argument.

It all depends...do u want to stay subservient to a foreign power or do you want to be a part of a totally independent country?
Ask the Americans if the war of independence was worth the cost.

We are subservient to no one. We determine our own destiny. Britain does not rule us.
