Yeas, it was 'people like Cosgrove,' but not Cosgrove.  His military record is easy to find.  Bloody good soldier and Leader, but he protected nothing.  Not even South Vietnam.  He did lead us into East Timor but that, too, had SFA to do with freedoms here in Australia.

My Old Man, and his Mob did all that.

We do NOT need a Prime Minister and a President ... i.e. calling the GG a President, won't work. If we ever become a Republic, the entire system has to change.

Of course it will work.

I'd like to hear why you think it wouldn't though    Undecided

Legal ramifications.  Wink

Nope.

I think it's just your personal preference.

Replacing the GG and Liz with a President (I'd choose a different name though) would most certainly work.

There's no need to change the entire system.

.....and he was just a grunt, who rejected a Lance Corporal stripe, as being 'beneath his dignity.'  That brought the house down at his Funeral.

What were the 'legal ramifications' that bugger wit Neferti (check her posting record) was referring to?

So you would just, say, change the name Parliament to Congress? Use as bit of whiteout on the Australian Constitution and hope for the best?  It's a LEGAL DOCUMENT, you can't just change the bloody name of stuff.

The American Republican "system" is basically the same as what we already have, sure, but ........... there are intricate parts that would need "amending". LEGALLY!

Although I agree that Australia should bag the Queen, it is not that easy and there are legalities that have to be addressed.  Besides, it would need yet another REFERENDUM as it would affect ALL Australians and the track record of referendums is around - Fail.

America needed a Civil War to become a Republic. Unless we are overtaken by the Muslims, I can't see Aussies taking up arms to defend themselves in their own country because we no longer want the Monarch in England. In 50 years? Maybe. I won't be around.

I've read the posts as they were made and I've now read back.....and not one 'legal ramification' can I find.  Perhaps you can clarify, wot?

Anyone who looks at your posting record here will see what you offer.

So you have traded knowledge and understanding for an online dictionary; well done

Like I said, I was not aware I was dealing with a child, so you need to talk to someone else now, I find children annoying.

Is that it, Neferti.  Is that the 'legal ramification?'  We'd need a 'referendum?'  Wot?  You are shittin' me, aren't you?

Surely Abbott can just wave his magic wand, and voila........we are a Republic!

Cheesy

Only eight Referenda succeeded.  How many of those were bipartisan?
