Armoured car drivers strike may dry up cash at ATMs

Chubb Security armoured vehicle drivers across the ACT are on strike and stopping deliveries of cash to ATM facilities and banks through Christmas.

Unhappy with the pay agreement proposed by their employer, all 12 Chubb Security armoured vehicle guards and drivers that make up the ACT cash and transit division have stopped work.

Australians are expected to spend over $100 billion this Christmas and Transport Workers Union ACT branch secretary, Klaus Pinkas said this industrial action could cause disruptions and low cash supply in Canberra over Christmas. ''Some services may be disrupted,'' he said. ''Our teams service ATMs for ANZ and Bendigo Bank, CashCard and others. They may run low on cash.''   Sad

The Chubb Security employees working in the cash transit division have been in pay negotiations for the past three months and last week voted against a proposed 2.9 per cent pay increase. The striking employees are seeking a 3.9 per cent pay increase, equal to the rise offered to armoured vehicle crews in Sydney.

Chubb Security has promised that despite the whole-division strike throughout the Christmas week, they will continue a reliable service.

''There is no disturbance to customer services,'' a Chubb Security spokesman said. Georgina Connery
