PRIME Minister Tony Abbott says the last Australian soldier has left Oruzgan Province in Afghanistan.

Canberra Defence Minister David Johnston said the last troops left Oruzgan yesterday.

"They are in the air on the way home,'' he told reporters in Sydney.

Mr Abbott thanked the soldiers for their service, saying they had paid a high price with 40 dead and 261 seriously wounded.

"Oruzgan today is a very significantly different and better place than it was a decade ago," he said.

All those lives and all that money and now after all that to lose this war in such a cowardly way.  Howard and Abbott promised they would never cut and run and what did they do?

I'm happy to leave 'the politics' right here.  Abbott cannot claim credit for this event, and stuffed if anyone ought allow him to.  If cods reckons he legitimately can, then she should also blame Abbott for the current deficit.

Our departure from Afghanistan was decided long ago, and the logistics of that have been in progress prior to the last election.

They did a great job. It's just a pity more people didn't get behind them. Afghanistan could of been turned into a decent place to live.

True Aussie, but what would you have them do, ask Gillard to announce it?  He is the pm of the day. He can't claim credit but he can announce it,  and let's just be happy about the announcement.  Tomorrow is another day.

True enough alevine, but I'll bet pounds to peanuts that the ADF is still there.  We just will not hear about it anymore.

Why did we go there?

MOST of Australia's 1600 troops will be home from Afghanistan by Christmas, but our defence chief has warned the war-ravaged nation remains rife with corruption.

Hundreds of millions of dollars will be saved after yesterday's announcement the majority of Australia's troops would leave Afghanistan a year earlier than expected.

Both the ALP and Coalition supported the war in Afghanistan so the OP has shown a complete lack of substance as usual.....Trying to score political points over this issue shows a complete lack of respect for the job our soldiers did on behalf of all Australians!!!

The Coalition won't stay unless they have a huge force to run the logistics and maintain the bases. You can't have a small force in Afghanistan because the Taliban will rip them apart. If people start coming home it's finished.

"Oruzgan today is a very significantly different and better place than it was a decade ago," he said.

its worth a try at least..

at least we try to make a place BETTER.. not for ourselves.. for those that live there..under extreme endurance and fear..

I hope we give the Afghan boys a really great welcome home boys..
