Australia denies Somali woman surgery

Federal Labor has called on Immigration Minister Scott Morrison to reconsider a decision to deny a Somali woman a short-term visa that would allow her to undergo surgery for gunshot wounds.

Ayaan Mohamed, 25, had her face shattered by a bullet as her family tried to flee violence in Somalia's brutal civil war. She was two years old at the time.

Because the complicated facial reconstruction surgery she requires is not available in her homeland, Brisbane's Wesley Hospital and Rotary had offered to bring her to Australia.

But the government has refused to grant Ayaan a short-term medical visa.

Opposition immigration spokesman Richard Marles said the Australian identity was one characterised by compassion.

'Mr Morrison, this decision makes no sense,' he said.

'It appears profoundly unfair and needs to be reconsidered.'

Why would you refuse a short-term medical visa for this woman Mr Morrison....All it will cost is a bit of compassion???

I agree. I can't see why Morrison would deny this, but I am hoping there is a very good, legitimate reason for it.

Adel, on the face of it, this decision seems to have no justification and appears mean-hearted. But the article is short on details and even the Labor Immigration spokesman seems to not know the full story. I suggest we all wait for the full details to be revealed before passing judgement.

'It appears profoundly unfair and needs to be reconsidered.'

This statement leads me to think that there is more to this story than meets the eye.

I would like to see this country helping itself instead of destroying it..

Your not wrong there Dave.....Morrison is not known for his ability to communicate with the plebs.....I cannot see any justification for his decision however if he has a reason it must be a good one!!!

Huh Huh Huh

performing surgery on 23 year old bullet wounds isn't exactly crucial.

...

besides, aren't you lot always bitching about the state of our hospitals?  make up your mind.

So you'd begrudge this woman treatment for this disfigurement?

We CAN help, and we SHOULD.

What if it was someone YOU knew?

How would you like to be shot in the face, and have to walk around
like this, when someone COULD help but WON'T?

You are correct when you say she is not the only one suffering and in need of help.....However help has been offered for this woman who has no other chance of ever getting treatment.....The only thing stopping her from getting treatment is a short term medical visa.....This is about compassion for a young woman who has been offered help but had it denied and I would like to know why???
