What I often hear is that solar energy can't deliver base load power for industry.

This solar furnace in france, operating since 1970, produces temperatures up to 3,500c. With a set up like that we could smelt the Pilbarra iron mountains on site.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ac/Four_solaire_001.jpg/40...

SO?? It's a furnace.....can it still smelt stuff at night??

Does it matter?  Grin

Yes actually it DOES...it's a furnace, not a power generation system..
It is NOT in anyway a set up to produce 'base-load' power it's something that uses power, not a thing that generates it.
'

Gizmo as I've said and really there's no controversy about it, residential houses can produce more than enough power for their own use. So the 'cant produce base power' argument relates to the enormous draw of industry, in particular furnaces. How can it matter whether furnaces get powered off a grid or simply by focusing solar power directly?

Other than the latter being a hell of a lot cheaper.

The half life of Cesium-137 is about 30 years.

The rule of thumb for how long a radionuclide takes to decay away to background levels is between 10 to 20 half lives.

So we should expect Cs137 to linger in the environment and in the food chain, for between 300 and 600 years.

You do not want to hear about some of the other LONG-LIVED radionuclides released by the Fukishima meltdowns

December 2013

51 naval personnel serving on the USS Ronald Reagan, which was located just off the coast of Fukushima during the nuclear meltdowns, have been diagnosed with cancer.

Many other personnel have also reported a variety of illnesses and conditions.

The USS Ronald Reagan was basically inside the fall out plume. This vessel is equipped with radiation detection equipment. Once the levels climbed to unsafe levels, the USS Ronald Reagan moved away from the Japanese east coast.

Nuclear Snow! USS Ronald Reagan Sailors Sue TEPCO Over Fukushima Radiation Sickness!

Navy sailors have radiation sickness after Japan rescue

Navy sailor Lindsay Cooper knew something was wrong when billows of metallic-tasting snow began drifting over USS Ronald Reagan.
“I was standing on the flight deck, and we felt this warm gust of air, and, suddenly, it was snowing,” Cooper recalled of the day in March 2011 when she and scores of crewmates watched a sudden storm blow toward them from the tsunami-torn coast of Fukushima, Japan.
The tall 24-year-old with a winning smile didn’t know it then, but the snow was caused by the freezing Pacific air mixing with a plume of radioactive steam from the city’s shattered nuclear reactor.
Now, nearly three years after their deployment on a humanitarian mission to Japan’s ravaged coast, Cooper and scores of her fellow crew members on the aircraft carrier and a half-dozen other support ships are battling cancers, thyroid disease, uterine bleeding and other ailments.
“We joked about it: ‘Hey, it’s radioactive snow!’ ” Cooper recalled. “I took pictures and video.”
But now “my thyroid is so out of whack that I can lose 60 to 70 pounds in one month and then gain it back the next,” said Cooper, fighting tears. “My menstrual cycle lasts for six months at a time, and I cannot get pregnant. It’s ruined me.”
The fallout of those four days spent off the Fukushima coast has been tragic to many of the 5,000 sailors who were there.
At least 70 have been stricken with some form of radiation sickness, and of those, “at least half . . . are suffering from some form of cancer,” their lawyer, Paul Garner, told The Post Saturday.
“We’re seeing leukemia, testicular cancer and unremitting gynecological bleeding requiring transfusions and other intervention,” said Garner, who is representing 51 crew members suing the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the Fukushima Daiichi energy plant.
“Then you have thyroid polyps, other thyroid diseases,” added Garner, who plans to file an amended lawsuit in federal court in San Diego next month that will bring the number of plaintiffs past 70.

Mr photon,

Sadly that law suit against TEPCO by the Naval personnel of the USS Ronald Reagan, was thrown out of court just the other day.

There is a another attempt at legal action planned for January 2014

Top climate scientists support the use of safe nuclear power...
Can't argue with that...I mean that's science and is by it's very definition irrefutable...
People who say otherwise are liars...deniers...who would keep from our children a better world...

In what proportion?

It seems to me that, among the best qualified, there's more substantial disagreement on nuclear than there is on Anthropogenic Global Warming.

For mine, nuclear is less a solution than a different set of problems.

So you're confused. At least you're consistent.

I take it you have no clue about the proportion of Climate scientists who advocate nuclear. What's the point of a datum if you're ignorant of its significance?

Well, if it's factual evidence you're after:

muso wrote on Dec 3rd, 2013 at 11:49am:
http://nextbigfuture.com/2008/03/deaths-per-twh-for-all-energy-sources.html

Deaths per TWh for all energy sources. Rooftop solar is actually more dangerous that Chernobyl.

Energy Source              Death Rate (deaths per TWh)

Coal – world average               161 (26% of world energy, 50% of electricity)
Coal – China                       278
Coal – USA                         15
Oil                                36  (36% of world energy)
Natural Gas                         4  (21% of world energy)
Biofuel/Biomass                    12
Peat                               12
Solar (rooftop)                     0.44 (less than 0.1% of world energy)
Wind                                0.15 (less than 1% of world energy)
Hydro                               0.10 (europe death rate, 2.2% of world energy)
Hydro - world including Banqiao)    1.4 (about 2500 TWh/yr and 171,000 Banqiao dead)
Nuclear                             0.04 (5.9% of world energy)

Even with the major incidents at Fukushima and Chernobyl, Nuclear wins hands down as the safest method of electricity generation.

I just plain don't accept those figures Muso, they just fly in the face of my perceived reality. I mean if solar energy makes up less than 0.01 % of world energy use what's with the apparent abundance of solar powered gadgets, roof top panels, solar energy installers etc etc? Seems to mke somebody can't see the solar energy industry through the pile of their own bullshyte.

Now if I was to google Fatal accidents Nuclea power, I figure I'd get a number. If I googled Fatal Accidents solar power, I'd get another numbert. I very much doubt that those numbers would have much bearing on each other. For instance somebody falling off a roof because of their own amateur hour clumsiness doesn't strike me as attributable to solar energy while somebody going down with radiation sickness due to a meltdown at a nuclear power plant is not attributable to anything but nuclear energy.

A 'meltdown' I remember when that was just a science fictional concept, not an annual event.

Was that a question? Apparently they cause fires. Houses burn down, killing people.

Not many people have died from exposure to ionising radiation.  Maybe a few develop thyroid cancer, but of them, very few actually die from it.

The link is provided at the web site. It seems quite rigorous.

Recently released Soviet documents estimate that at least 450,000 people died post Chernobyl fallout (military and civilian deaths).

The NY Academy of Sciences Report on Chernobyl fallout deaths from 1986 to 2003, put the fatality rate at 985,000.

One needs to distinguish between external and internal exposure to radionuclides and ionisation.

There is a Non-Linear zero threshold safety limit for exposure to radiation. And the risk to ones health caused by exposure to external/internal ionising radiation is CUMMULATIVE.

What people need to appreciate and come to grips with is the health risks associated with INTERNAl radiation exposure, as well as the Bio-accumulation of radionuclides in the earths biological and non biological systems.

We know from recent German (Kiks) and French studies that the incident of cancer in Children living near nuclear power stations increases significantly.

There is routine emissions of tritium (H3) which is NOT filtered out of nuclear power station waste water streams and air. Tritium is a small atom which is difficult and expensive to filter. It also has a dangerous half life of 12 years and can linger in the environment for 120 to 240 years.

The Northern Hemisphere has a higher level of radiation than the southern hemisphere. Studies confirm that your risk of cancer and other diseases is lower purely by living in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are many apologists in the mass media and even in Academia and industry that disseminate misinformation and deceptive scientific trickery. Beware of their lies and spin. They are equipped immorally like the Tobacco spin doctors and Global Warming denialist priests

So HOW MANY additional deaths have occurred in the global population since WW2 that can be attributed to the exposure of internal and external radiation?

cheers
