No blog - research. It is easier to shoot the messenger than refute the message.

Edit: I saw an article in a newspaper that said the magnets were made from neodymium, and seeing as I had never heard of it- it piqued my interest.

The Daily Mail online or one of the many blogs that repeated the incorrect story.

I wonder then what the true story is- you seem to know it - Do tell.

'Rare earth magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets made and are integral to the high tech industry, particularly in clean energies, such as electric vehicle motors and wind turbine generators. China extracts and produces about 95% of the world's rare earth minerals and since 2010 has cut its exports. In addition to supply chain concerns, the extraction process is highly polluting to the environment.'

ENERCON WECs produce clean energy without neodymium
29.04. 2011

Quote:
ENERCON wind energy converters (WECs) generate electricity in an environmentally friendly way without the use of the controversial element, neodymium. The gearless WEC design on which all WEC types – from the E-33/330 kW to the E-126/7.5 MW – are based includes a separately excited annular generator.

Direct drive windmills used to use neodymium, however:
Quote:
Portfolio managers at Murphy&Spitz announced that they had removed manufacturers of direct-drive wind turbines containing neodymium from their environmental fund.

It doesn't sound like Neodymium is as essential as the Daily Mail seemed to think. Apart from that, it is eminently possible to manufacture neodymium magnets without stuffing up the local environment. In fact I'd suggest that with their funding cut. they will have a major priority on that project.

I'll tell you who I don't trust. Once you find one lie in Anthony Watt's blog, it loses all credibility. It's tainted with the dishonour of the lie. I'll give you the benefit of ignorance. I'll assume that you haven't found any lies yet.

Well that's one big improvement on the last guy.

The devil is in the detail. Obviously technology has changed since that was written.

I'm trying to find ways around my restrictions. That last method seems the best so far.

Sorry. I'll turn it into a link, but I'll tell you this. Just because you find something on some denialist blog and drop it here, like a dog bringing home something rotten. does not imply that anybody here has any compulsion to debunk it.

As I pointed out windmills are not a big user of rare earths. You do know that neodymium is a rare earth? Technologies vary, so not all wind turbines use those minerals.

Research in ignorance is hazardous.

"The use of permanent magnets offers freedom in machine design and the highest possible efficiencies for wind power machines. Although full power converters must be used with permanent magnet machines, these converters make it possible to fulfill even the strictest grid codes. If appropriate care is taken in selecting the exact magnetic material composition, Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnets are compatible with long term generator use. However, rare earth material prices have been so volatile lately that highpower applications using lower strength ferrite magnet materials are being studied. "

yes ladies and gentlemen, renewable sustainable alternatives MUST be PERFECT in every regard and HAVE strict disciplined economical standards and void of subsidies OTHERWISE humanity must continue with this sort of thing

......
...

....and these things are the CHAMPIONS of tax payer subsidies, corruption, inefficiency and self destuction

So it seem we should exchange one form of pollution, which may have benefits for the world, for another.

That's logic for you.
