Health Risk Trends in Tokyo
Nov 16th, 2013 at 9:29pm

There are more urgent issues in Japan at the moment.

Dr Mita in Tokyo has alerted authorities of a very disturbing Health risk trend identified in children

The typical white blood cell count (ie the most common white blood cell, neutrophil) has shifted from 4000 to 2500 since the Fukushima meltdowns. the threshold level is about 3000.

Dr Mita recommends the evacuation of children and pregnant women from Tokyo and other contaminated cities

the official thyroid cancer number amongst children that were living in the Fukushima prefecture alone is now 59. The normal incidence rate amongst children is 1 in 500,000.

In Chernobyl, thyroid cancer didn't start emerging in children until about 4 to 5 years after the meltdown.

Japan is seeing cases as early as 2 years

very worrying.

but as we all know, corporate profits are the priority, and lying to he public so that nobody panics.

And of course the task of restarting the nuclear power industry in Japan (at the moment all 52 reactors are off line, with the exception of maybe one reactor)

thats good..  all off-line  that is.

I 'm not surprised at the info you have posted CL.
I would think there are other, more obvious signs of significant contamination.. but they have not been made widely known.. Musn't PANIC people.  .
After all...... Sad Sad  it is too  late for the majority of Japanese residents exposed already.  And there seems nothing can be done about the on-going contamination which will continue to ravage the people for untold yrs to come.

I really do not understand people who tout the nuclear power industry.

OF ALL sources of power,  surely this is the most deadly,  LONG TIME........
and the goal?  to further our irresponsible,  no, suicidal ,   use of high-cost high-risk fuels, at the expense of every living thing on this planet.

IMO..?

People who support nuclear power as a viable alternative are .......totally divorced from the natural world,  and think only in terms of power output, profitability, and to hell with tomorrow..
perhaps they HOPE that all this contamination will just fade away...

yeah ..like in 2 million yrs..  or some such.  Shockedl

or it will all be dug up and shot into space..??   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Cheesy

I don't know who Dr Mita is, but I hope he is making this recommendation on the basis of an extensive risk assessment that considers the risk of mortality associated with mass evacuations, because that in itself is not an insignificant risk which may exceed the risk of "do nothing". If he has carried out this risk assessment, I do hope that the necessary expertise was brought in to make an effective assessment of risk.

Evacuation is not a strategy that should be recommended on the whim of one person alone.

Quote:
Exposures from a contaminated environment, suggest Buongiorno et al., should be compared with average total natural background rates (http://tinyurl.com/c6whqb8). This accounts for the low dose-rate and is thus more scientifically valid than comparisons with medical exposures delivered over a few seconds. Comparison with the range of natural levels is also much more informative than with government permissible limits, which may be thousands of times too low.

The world average dose-rate for natural background is 0.27 μSv/hr (times 8766 hr/y gives 2.4 mSv/y). The excess dose received in Denver is 3 mSv/y—what Richard Muller calls the “Denver dose.” The current International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) evacuation standard of 1 mSv/y would appear to require the immediate evacuation of Denver, Muller notes (WSJ 8/18-19/12),  among many other places.
