Women dress for other women...
Oct 22nd, 2013 at 6:36pm

We all know as women its true...so what does that say about us/women ?

Women are very critical of other women, constantly competing for the attention of the best male/alpha male.

Can women  co-exist with each other in our societal structure, such as it is, without killing each other, or is it just the way we are biologically wired and will always be..maybe Darwinian even?

I am very doubtful that it is possible, but am ever hopeful that it is possible that women can compete "out there",in a healthy non combative way?  Wink

Let's see.

I agree with some of the points you make. I was surprised that some of the worst sexism (particularly in regards to femininity and fertility) toward Gillard was expressed by other women. I really didn't see that coming.

As for the title, I dress for myself and have for a very long time. When I was in my late teens I suppose I dressed for men, not other women.

I did, but I was a female who was not concerned about her appearance, more her Politics and insistence on favoured treatment because she was a woman..if your going to compete in a male arena, deal with it.

That is of course if you want to be considered an equal. She copped a bit of mysogyny yes, but that was to be expected. She was working amongst a gaggle of trogyldites and one eyed cyclopeans..yes?

Sexism exists and is praticed by both sides so when she made it a focal point of who she was, when she let that define her, it was just so tired and cliche'. Get over it.. I was more concerned/furious that she was allowing  her party sink rather than give up the precious.

Like Annie, I dress for myself. I so seriously couldn't care less about anyone else.

As long as the attire is comfortable for ME, flaunts MY best features to make ME feel confident and is reasonably made and priced .. then that's all that matters to ME.

I've always been like this.

I'm beginning to wonder if my attitude is more of an exception to the norm.

Given the above posts .. perhaps not.

Hmmmmmmmmm.

I live in jeans and black t-shirts!  I couldn't give a continental toss about fashion.  Never have, never will.

Shorts and tank tops are so comfortable. Perhaps that's why I wear them all the time.

If we go out though .. I tend to dress up a tad by throwing on a light flowing skirt. A nice tank top is a must in this heat IMO.

Jeans are just too restricitve for me these days. I have this annoying ceasarean scar which is still trying to heal, so comfortable cotton is the go here atm.

Absolutely!  Tis a beauty of aging imo.  Loving the skin we are in, wearing what is comfortable and not being led by the fashions.

Fingers crossed it stays that way .. coz you never know who may slither in next and ruin it all for the rest of us.

The place will be opened up to males so that may make it harder to deal with whoever "slithers" in... depends on your depending I guess.. having not been modded for quite a while its bound to change though?  I'm thinking it will interesting getting to know you all. I know Lisa was on PA as was I , pre dating her by a few months, before I got sick of the place and left the sh.it pit.

Seems like I have a couple of sh.t stirrers on board already

I like jeans but rarely wear them now and I only own one pair of shorts. Skirts and dresses are great and I wear them when I go out somewhere nice because I like the way they make me feel, but I have to say leggings are my best friend and have been for ages.

I work full time, so most of my attire is professional wear. I'm vain, tall and athletically built so I pay attention to how I look. Clothes look good on me, so I like fashion and spend a quite a bit of money on it. I like being given the once over by men or women. I like being told that I look good by men or women. I like commenting on other women when they look good too.

I have friends and family who couldn't give a toss about fashion and do nothing very much, or at all to make themselves look good... or even neat for that matter... I don't like or love them any less for it. That's their way. They are no more or less happy because of it. They are no more or less empowered because of it.

Those who are close friend and family like to poke fun at my vanity... and heck, so do I. No point taking it seriously.

So, how does my attitude fit into the general opinions being expressed I wonder?

Good on you for continuing to pay so much attention to your appearance Sappho. It shows that you still have a lot of pride. I'm not saying that women who don't dress in the latest fashion don't have pride, but for some of us we reach a stage in life where it isn't that important anymore.

Well we have existed with each other since life began and will continue to exist with each other. Some women are easier to get on with than others of course - so we have to judge them individually.

I think you become more tolerant of their idiosyncrasies as you get older and don't look at other females so much as competitors, although perhaps you don't form the same close bonds you do when you're young.

Maybe as you mature you understand yourself more and therefore can see where other females are coming from more objectively and accept it.
