Quote:well that is one version of a mandate which in your odd world amounts to 'support my own position and nothing else'.
If I get elected on a platform, it is not only my mandate to do all I can to implement it, it is my responsibility to do so to those who voted for me.
Have another go at them apples, melielongtime.
for a supposed lawyer you have a poor understanding of some words. the clue is the first sentence 'if I get elected..'. labor DIDTN get elected and therefore do not have a mandate for anything. they have their policies for sure but none of them come with a mandate.
Longweekend, you have a misunderstanding of "mandate". After a referendum there is a mandate. But after an election ... NO.
The libs took many policies to the election. and the carbon tax was one of them, but I believe 'STOP the Boats' and 'Financial Crisis' were the top two. Regardless, when there were several issues presented, winning the election does not give a mandate for ALL (or any).
There is no doubt that Libs have an obligation to attempt to fulfil their main promises, but even with Labor losing, they also have an obligation to stand up for their main promises, that what they were voted in to do. They weren't voted in to support the government policies if they lost!.
To expect Labor to just concede on every Lib policy is just childish. If a political party gets defeated in an election you suggest that the defeated party should take up all the winning party's policies? We would never have an opposition (I know, that's what the Libs prefer - no opposition, no held to account - just a free rein). But would the Libs ever give Labor a free rein if they lost?
If "mandates" do exist, it was clear that Rudd had a mandate which the libs failed to support in 2008. Why should Labor support Abbott's "mandate".
The only mandate I believe in is a referendum. Winning an election gives the party the opportunity to TRY to implement its policies. In the words of Abbott "Oppositions OPPOSE".
