Brisbane judge sentences would-be mercenary bound for West Papua

A Melbourne man who trained to be a mercenary to fight the Indonesian military and police in West Papua has been sentenced to seven months' jail by a District Court judge in Brisbane.

Gerard Michael Little, 46, was arrested last December trying to board a flight to Port Moresby.

He had earlier completed a five-day mercenary training course in Ukraine and had boasted on social media that he was a colonel in the West Papuan freedom movement.

Little pleaded guilty to preparing for an incursion into a foreign state.

In sentencing, Judge Douglas McGill described Little's bid to be a freedom fighter as delusional.

He said the 218 days Little spent in pre-sentence custody was longer than the sentence he would otherwise have imposed.

Let's hope they do the same thing to those people fighting in Syria.

He certainly should have been charged and convicted, for being a grown man posting on facebook.

He looks like he has read one too many* Soldier of Fortune magazines.
