Chris Hayes On Why So Many Conservatives Deny The Climate Problem: They Hate The Solution

http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/08/14/2467371/msnbc-chris-hayes-on-conserv...
By Joe Romm on August 14, 2013 at 4:54 pm

On Friday (8 pm ET), MSNBC is airing Chris Hayes’s climate documentary, “The Politics of Power.”

On Thursday (1 pm ET), Chris Hayes is hosting a Google+ Hangout on the politics of climate change — with me, Andy Revkin, Kate Sheppard and a couple of others. You can watch it here.

I’ve had a chance to preview the special, and it is a solid piece of work that covers everything from the science to the solutions to the deniers to the politics. In a sane world, it would be a yawner, the umpteenth climate special aired on TV. But in the world we live in, a one-hour TV special devoted solely to global warming is as hard to find as a climate scientist at a Tea Party Convention.

Kudos to MSNBC for running this. Hayes is still the only major TV journalist who routinely devotes a significant amount of air time to telling the truth about global warming.

Speaking of which, on Monday’s All In show, Hayes had a good segment on “The Republican allure of climate change denialism.”

He makes the point that I have argued for the past decade, “the real reason conservatives don’t believe in climate science” is they can’t stand the solution.

Hayes plays an excerpt from remarks by hard-core denier Rep. Dana “dinosaur flatulence” Rohrabacher (R-CA):

ROHRABACHER: Just so you’ll know, global warming is a total fraud. The federal government, they want to create global government to control all of our lives. That’s what their game plan is. It’s step by step by step more and bigger control over our lives by higher levels of government. And global warming is simply that strategy in spades.

HAYES: Now, the whole “global warming is a liberal conspiracy” line is understandably a big hit among the conservative base, but in delivering that line, Congressman Rohrabacher tips his hand to the reasoning behind his global warming denialism, which basically goes like this: If global warming is real, then the government would need to intervene to fix it, but we don’t like government intervention. Therefore, global warming cannot be real.

That’s it. That is the logic behind the pervasive view on climate change on the right: We don’t like the solutions to this problem, so we officially declare this not to be a problem.

This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper.

Hayes then talks with Samuel Thernstrom, who served on George W. Bush’s Council on Environmental Quality. It is pretty painful to watch Thernstrom push the old Frank Luntz playbook — “Technology, technology, blah, blah, blah” — which Bush himself turned into a mantra.

For you Millennials out there, Luntz’s infamous (and still must-read) 2002 “Straight Talk” memo on climate change messaging was designed for conservatives who want to sound like they care about global warming even as they twist the knife in deeper:

Technology and innovation are the key in arguments on both sides. Global warming alarmists use American superiority in technology and innovation quite effectively in responding to accusations that international agreements such as the Kyoto accord could cost the United States billions. Rather than condemning corporate America the way most environmentalists have done in the past, they attack us for lacking faith in our collective ability to meet any economic challenges presented by environmental changes we make. This should be our argument. We need to emphasize how voluntary innovation and experimentation are preferable to bureaucratic or international intervention and regulation.

More than a decade later, the playbook is exactly the same! Basically, as Hayes shows, we progressives can talk about global warming as much as we want as long as we don’t propose anything that might actually solve the problem in a timely fashion. In this view, any climate proposal other than long-long-long-term research and development is automatically just a big government power grab. Of course, conservatives oppose increasing the budget for clean energy R&D, too, but who are we to get hung up on a foolish consistency? It’s not like the health and well-being of billions of people are at stake.

This is just the old breakthrough-technology canard, which has been debunked umpteen times (see “The breakthrough technology illusion“). See also “Study Confirms Optimal Climate Strategy: Deploy, Deploy, Deploy, R&D, Deploy, Deploy, Deploy” (but not in that order).

As then NY Times columnist Andy Revkin explained about one denier conference a few years ago, “The one thing all the attendees seem to share is a deep dislike for mandatory restrictions on greenhouse gases.” What unites these people is their desire to delay or stop action to cut GHGs, not any one particular view on the climate.

It is nearly impossible to win an argument with a conservative or libertarian who hates government-led action. Yes, you can try to point out all the great things the government has done (the Internet, anyone?) and try to point out that they invariably support government-led action for military security, and, of course, government subsidies and regulations to promote energy security, at least as it applies to the oil industry and nuclear energy pork.

[... continued]

I have made a different argument: If you hate government intrusion into people’s lives, you’d better stop catastrophic global warming, because nothing drives a country more towards activist government than scarcity and deprivation.

Real adaptation requires much bigger and far more intrusive government than mitigation. Indeed, if the anti-science ideologues continue to stop serious mitigation, then the government will inevitably get into the business of telling people where they can and can’t live (can’t let people keep rebuilding in the ever-spreading flood plains or the ever-enlarging areas threatened by sea level rise and Dust-Bowlification) and how they can live (sharp water curtailment in the SW Dust Bowl, for instance) and possibly what they can eat. Conservative opposition to serious climate action now will force big government in coming decades to triage our major coastal cities — Key West and Galveston and probably New Orleans would be unsavable, but what about Miami and Houston? (See Don’t believe in global warming? That’s not very conservative.)

This is why Tea-Party ‘conservatism’ is probably the most radical political philosophy ever to achieve significant political power in this country, since it ultimately will destroy the American way of life as we have come to know it, leading to untold misery and far bigger government than this country has seen in the post-WWII era.

Lots of links and a couple of video clips in the original, for anyone who's interested.

The solution is to transition to new technology.  Many of the Energy companies are already taking steps in that direction.

Don't forget that the Renewable Energy Target was introduced by the Howard Government.

The renewable energy generation in Australia is currently running at around 13-15%.

But now we have Iron Man Abbott and climate change is crap!

It can't be true because - well - it just can't be true.

A comment I just read on one frequently proposed option:
Quote:
Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen and physician Helen Caldicott have both said that people should evacuate the Northern Hemisphere if one of the Fukushima fuel pools collapses.

Just in case you thought it couldn't get any worse.

Arnie Gundersen is no nuclear expert. He's an anti-nuclear campaigner who frequently blows things out of all proportion.

The main effects of Fukushima have been social and economic rather than radiological.  Refugees from the area are shunned by Japanese society as somehow being unclean or contaminated.  They have major problems being accepted socially.

There is local contamination of fish stocks, but outside the immediate area, there is very little risk.

On Tony Abbot, the Liberals policy on Climate change acknowledges that climate change is real, and includes the following:

Quote:
An “Emissions Reduction Fund” of $3 billion to fund projects that would reduce carbon emissions, based on a tender process. Support for projects such as “soil carbon technologies and abatement”.

A commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 5 percent by 2020.

He has turned around from his 2009 statement that "climate change is crap".

I don't think the ALP's track record up to now has been glowing either. Eventually governments all over the world will have to take some very expensive direct action because the major powers have missed the boat.

The fact remains that the most effective scheme to date has been the RET scheme, sad though that may be.

I don't think that the ALP offers any clear advantage on the environment.  It comes down to which party has the best fiscal policy.  Enormous deficits are not really compatible with  environmental initiatives.

Gundersen is professionally a nuclear power engineering expert. He his whistle blowing in the 1970s with regards to unsafe practices in a nuclear power plant that he was managing, resulted in him been pushed out of the industry. He ran an independent nuclear consulting firm ever since.

Arnie Gundersen's case whistle blowing case was actually taken up and exposed in the US congress by ex astronaust senator John Glen.

Read up on the NY Academy of Sciences report of the consequences of the chernobyl disaster. The death toll estimate from chernobyl during the period 1986 to 2003 is 985,000.

The release of radioactive contaminants into the environment is bio concentrated by ecological systems. Up the food chain.

Also, the exposure risk models used by nuclear regulatory bodies focus on external radiation exposure.

The main health issues with radionuclides being released into the food chain and the environment is the internal exposure to humans via direct inhalation and ingestion.

Trivialising the fukushima disaster and providing misinformed distractions is distrageful to say the least.

The health issues from fukushima are ongoing and inescapable.

QUICK GLOBAL WARMING WILL DESTROY YOU & YOUR CHILDREN.

We have to create a $2 trillion dollar carbon credit market so that you and your children will be safe once more.

After we create this $2 trillion dollar carbon credit market it will become safe to once more send up manmade CO2 emissions, as many as we can.

That's global warming.

I'm not going to argue with you again on Gundersen's hilarious gaffes on nuclear power and the Fukushima accident. He's an expert in his own mind only.

He's now saying that moving the spent fuel rods will result in them going critical. Anybody who knows anything about the industry knows that's laughable.

Anyway, this thread is about conservatives and denial of the climate problem.

What problem????

We currently have some of the lowest temperatures in our history.

We also have some of the lowest amounts of CO2 in our atmosphere according to our history.

What problem is real????

The problem lies in the implications for humanity of an increase in temperature of anything up to 8 degrees by 2100.

When you say "Our history" meaning the history of mankind, then you are wrong. The CO2 levels are at currently at their highest for 3 million years at which time there were no homo sapiens.

At that time temperatures were about 8 degrees higher than today and sea levels were about 8 metres higher.  The Pliocene period is the subject of considerable study at the moment, because it provides a good analog for what is to come as a result of AGW (albeit at a much higher rate of change).

Though in the context of AGW and it's impacts on human society however - "our history" really applies to the history of permanent human settlements and significant built infrastructure - 10,000 years at most, with the majority of large human settlements and infrastructure being developed in the last 1000 years.

In this context:
We currently have THE highest temperatures in our history.

We also have THE highest amounts of CO2 in our atmosphere according to our history.

What is the significance of mammals in this argument?  Do you think that the argument is that we'll suddenly all keel over because of the high temperatures.

Your problem is that you truly don't understand what you're trying to argue against, and it's laughable.  You need to read some of these IPCC Reports that Watts talks about so that at least you know what arguments you are opposing  Grin

Tell me what the significant is for mammals that were well adapted to the paleo temperatures of the time.  Did mammals have problems with salination of coastal aquifers? You tell me. You brought them up.

Quote:
What makes those bubbles rise to the top in your beer glass..????

The bubbles in your beer are like the holes in your argument.  They rise because the density of the gas is less than the density of the beer.  What's your point?

Quote:

I can ask a similar question - If it's foggy in the morning, do you refuse to get out of bed because fog is water, and you can drown in water?

The toxicity of CO2 is a very minor matter in the scheme of things. Now, do you really think that anybody is  asking you to stop breathing or stop drinking beer? -  because in terms of CO2 emissions,  it's so insignificant that it really doesn't matter. It's fog compared to the ocean.

You knew that, didn't you? I don't believe that you could be that thick.

Quote:
So...what....????

Today we have some of the lowest temperatures EVER and

We have some of the lowest amounts of CO2 in our atmosphere...!!!

We've considered that particular argument, and the data says otherwise. There were higher levels of CO2 and higher temperatures millions of years in the past.  So what?  The rate of change is the issue here.

Quote:
Do you really think you can keep it there....???

No, because we haven't had much success to date in curbing emissions. We are headed for some very interesting times ahead, or at least our kids are.  If you ask me, we're screwed.  The question is - how screwed?

Quote:
Or that it's all due to manmade emissions...???

Define "it" and I'll answer your question.

The religion of denial is dying fast as it becomes patently obvious that greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion, cement manufacture, clearing of tropical rainforest etc are resulting in dangerous climate change.

The risks associated with each level of temperature rise have been quite comprehensively assessed. We're on the way to at least + 4 Celsius degrees with all a huge range of complex consequences, possibly more depending on what action the governments of the world take.

By calling it a religion, you grant climate science denial unwarranted dignity. Given the tiny minority who cling to its beliefs and the risks inherent in those beliefs, cult is a more appropriate description.

I am a conservative and I believe we have serious problems with rising CO2 and climate change.

I also see and hear a lot of  left wing Bogans that are climate change deniers.

Perhaps we could re examine the first premise.

(my apologies to all the left wing Bogans who are not climate deniers)

So am I. It shouldn't be a partisan issue.  We can still reduce the impact.

I am sure the vast majority of conservatives do accept the overwhelming evidence that AGW is a serious problem.

And of course - ignorance of this matter and denial does live on both sides of the political fence (Hi, Greggery Peccary) - but generally, the handful of remaining deniers still around are only those loyal Bolt and Jones followers, who call themselves "conservatives" - because that is what Bolt and Jonesy tell them they are.

Climate change is real no one is denying that.

Climate change has been with us since the Earth formed, otherwise we would still be a molten rock of lava.

The Earth cools and warms in accordance with its orbit around the sun and what the sun is doing at the time.

Its the natural cycle of the Earth.

What is not settled is that mans emissions of CO2 are going to destroy life as we know it today.

Now if governments were fairdinkum they wouldn't allow the future of all humanity to be placed in the hands of wall street and the stock exchange.

That's how serious the problem really is, ie. trading carbon credits on the exchange will keep us all safe and sound from the boogey man.

Remember gentlemen when the bankers manage to get the $2 trillion dollar carbon credit market going.

THE LAST THING ON THEIR MINDS WILL BE TO REDUCE MANMADE CO2 EMISSIONS.

That's how real the problem is.

The science is far from settled.

1. the hot spot that the computer simulated models are telling us will cause a runaway greenhouse effect doesn't exist in the real world.

2. There is no correlation between CO2 and temperature, CO2 lags temperature by about 800 years, look into our history for the truth.

3. Sea levels have been dropping and its not because 10000km3 fell on Australia and she soaked it all up, that is the biggest bed time story ever, well maybe close to the biggest bed time story AGW religion.

4. If we where so close to the precipice of no return for manmade CO3 emissions, do you think the best and quickest way is to create a $2 trillion dollar carbon credit market....????????...so bankers can get richer..????

The list goes on but I have to go out......oooouuuuurrroooo...!!!

Once again. Listen carefully this time. What you are saying is that the initial warming following glaciation is not caused by rising CO2 levels. Yes, we know. Nobody is claiming any different.   The initial warming is caused by changes to the Earth's orbit which increases the solar irradiance. Correct but you forgot to add, as the sun warms the Earth then more CO2 starts to get released into our atmosphere due to the temperature rise.

CO2 has never controlled temperature here on Earth not when we had 20 times the amount we have today or now with man throwing up a very small percentage of the total CO2 in our atmosphere.

Well if we're all doomed because man is throwing up some miniscule amount of CO2 compared to nature which by the way is plant food and the earth's vegetation will thrive on it.

Don't you think every country could have taken direct action.

Like for example employing the latest technology in feeding and capturing.

Front end..start by using gas fired boilers this reduces CO2 emissions by up to 25%.

At the back end use latets technology in capturing CO2,

1. Fabric Filter Bags
2. Electrostatic precipitators,
3. Scrubbers
4. Carbon sequestration

Like in 2002 the government legislated to reduce the sulphur content in diesel from 10% to 6%.

It just passed the law and the corporation to their disappointment in having to spend money for no return complied.

Did we need to go to the stock exchange for that too..????

Correct, but you forgot to add that this released CO2 leads to additional warming - about 40% of the total in fact.

Quote:

CO2 is a greenhouse gas. It leads to radiative forcing. Before we started emitting it to the atmosphere in huge quantities, there were other forcings which were more prominent.  Other forcings are due to direct solar forcing, cloud albedo, trace levels of methane etc.

It's true to say that prior to about 1960, the forcing signal due to carbon dioxide was not the dominant one. However careful measurements show that it has emerged as the dominant forcing since then. Does that mean that it's the only forcing? No. Does it mean that temperature must correlate with CO2 concentration? Not yet. There are other forcings and feedbacks to consider.

It's not that simple. There will be some increase in vegetation, but recent research shows increased damage to plants. I'll see if I can find that for you.

Old hat. Again, they reduce particulates while contributing to acid rain. Fabric filters are generally better than ESP's.

See Carbon capture - too hard basket again.

No.  Sea levels have not been dropping.
Sea levels are rising.
This is because the earth is warming

As you have already been shown from the article discussed on other threads:

Although there are daily, seasonal and annual variations, sea levels worldwide have been creeping up by 3mm a year on average, as a consequence of ocean warming and glacial melting....

Since 2011, when the atmospheric patterns shifted out of their unusual combination, sea levels have been rising at a faster pace of about 10 millimeters per year

In 2010-11 there was a drop of 7mm in sea levels, due apparently in part to the floods in Australia in those years.

10,000m3 fell on Australia - but no one has claimed that "she soaked it all up" as you claim.  What has been demonstrated to you on several occaisions is that it would only take one quarter of that volume to lower sea levels by 7mm.  Sone 2500km3

Seriously - you really need to start paying attention to what is written and stop telling lies.

The hot spot is the IPCC's mantle piece of evidence, their computer circulation model all show a heating of the tropopause an area of about 10 to 12 klms above sea level all around the equator.

This is what they claim will produce a runaway greenhouse effect.

Its just too bad that thousands of weather balloons and satellites cannot find this hot spot in the real world, it only exists in the computer circulation models.

Now why would that be.......???!!!

Maybe cause its

We are going to be taxed on the air we breath because of a computer model who's evidence is non existent in the real world......??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote:
Correct, but you forgot to add that this released CO2 leads to additional warming - about 40% of the total in fact.

Did a computer circulation model spit out this data.

Sorry dude, it has yet to be proven that CO2 drives climate change, it never did in the past when we had 20 times more CO2 in the atmosphere than today.

Why would it all of a sudden do so......?

Can you explain this........cause i'm all ears....??!!

Quote:
CO2 is a greenhouse gas. It leads to radiative forcing. Before we started emitting it to the atmosphere in huge quantities, there were other forcings which were more prominent.  Other forcings are due to direct solar forcing, cloud albedo, trace levels of methane etc.

Sure I don't disagree here, problem is that CO2 is a trace gas not enough to cause the damage that Al Gore scared the world with.

Water Vapor is the dominant greenhouse gas, take away all other greenhouse gases except water vapour and we will still be left with 95% of the greenhouse gas.

Quote:

No you are wrong CO2 is not the dominant greenhouse gas..??!!

Since 1998 more than one third of ALL that's ALL manmade CO2 emissions have been released into our atmosphere and yet there has been no warming since 1998.

That just shoots your theory full of holes.

That's like saying oxygen harms us!!!!!!!!

The CO2 which by the way isn't pollution can be extracted with scrubbers and then stored for sequestration.

Quote:
Old hat. Again, they reduce particulates while contributing to acid rain. Fabric filters are generally better than ESP's.

Correct but its not old hat, ask people who live next to a power station if they would prefer the filterization of the soot or the CO2...????

I would bet they would say the soot 99.99% of the time.

Quote:
I prefer good looking women.  (maybe you should explain more. What are you scrubbing from the air, using what? )

HAhahahah....Co2 can be scrubbed so stop being so silly.

Quote:
See Carbon capture - too hard basket again.

About as hard as getting the whole world to run on green energy.

Quote:
Yes they did. If they just removed subsidies on burning fossil fuels then that would help.

We don't need the UN and the IPCC telling us what to do with our resources and having to pay them too.

I say to hell with them they do nothing for Australia why should we allow them to dictate to us how and when we can use our resources.

Why should billions of Australia's tax pay dollar flor to them.

The money can be used here at home in a much better way to clean up pollution and work towards green energy.

I say p!ss them off once and for all.

I'll take that as meaning that you don't know.

The hot spot is the IPCC's mantle piece of evidence, their computer circulation model all show a heating of the tropopause an area of about 10 to 12 klms above sea level all around the equator.

This is what they claim will produce a runaway greenhouse effect.

The main factor here is that there is definite evidence of surface warming.  The hotspot doesn't confirm whether the surface warming is due to CO2 forcing or Solar forcing. In fact any warming should result in the same characteristic warming of the upper troposphere.  It's not the test that you think it is for CO2 warming.

The other important factor is that the charts in the IPCC paper refer to longterm equilibrium data. The period of study was too short and there was too much natural noise to get a good measurement.

The problem seems to be overconfidence in results, not accounting for El Nino events and taking the reading over too short a time scale. Fortunately there were other  papers that actually accounted for the El Nino events in this short period of time.

Here is one of them:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/joc.1651/abstract

Quote:
Tropical vertical temperature trends: A real discrepancy?

Quote:
We examine the sensitivity of modeled and observed tropical tropospheric temperature trend amplification (the ratio of T2LT “lower troposphere” to surface changes) to several sources of uncertainty. Model behaviour is robust across a large perturbed physics ensemble of HadCM3, yielding a smaller amplification range (1.44 ± 0.06) than a previous multi-model ensemble (1.41 ± 0.24). The uncertainty of inter-satellite calibration implied by available MSU T2 (mid-troposphere) estimates (σ = 0.035K) is much greater than that required to adequately resolve the trend (σ < 0.01K), or the amplification behaviour (implied amplification range ±0.95). Trend amplification uncertainty in both models and observations decreases as the timescale increases. Depending upon choice of dataset and time period, uncertainty in trend amplification estimates over 21 years lies between ±1.5 and ±0.2.

Now show me the bit where they talk about a runaway Greenhouse effect. I can't seem to find it. (Maybe because it isn't there)

You don't believe that CO2 is a greenhouse gas????

I'll respond to your other points in due course, but I'd love to see how you propose to scrub CO2 from the atmosphere.

Are you going to use a molecular sieve, lime, sodium hydroxide solution? What are you going to use. Think about the manufacture of each of those substances and then tell me where the net CO2 capture is, because lime is produced by heating carbonate rock, which emits CO2 to the atmosphere. Sodium hydroxide requires energy to produce and molecular sieves need to be regenerated.

There is actually an interesting bit of technology that converts CO2  to carbon monoxide and oxygen. It's interesting but in its early stages:

http://spectrum.ieee.org/energywise/green-tech/clean-coal/a-cheaper-way-to-turn-...

Once you have CO, you can hydrogenate it to form methanol and various petrochemicals.

Then there is CO2 to algae.

Quote:
OOHH my goodness where did you get that politicized hung of cr@p.

So CO2 harms vegetation????????

Apparently so, but you don't have to take my word for it. OK, now you're going to tell me that agricultural researchers are in on the conspiracy too?

Increased insect damage to plants grown in higher atmospheric CO2.  The leaves contain more sugar, which means that the pest species thrive.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080324173612.htm

Also - net reduction in plant growth worldwide. Increasing CO2 leads to reduced calcification of phytoplankton:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11655-climate-myths-higher-co2-levels-will...

http://www.satoconor.com/Home/tabid/36/EntryId/13/Carbon-Dioxide-Damage-in-the-F...

Quote:
Beside the fact that elevated carbon dioxide might cause for instance chlorosis and necrosis, the exponents of leaf damage, in some plants. It certainly affects the opening or closure of the stomata, starch content of the leaves and photosynthesis rate of all plants. Because of this some plants will show growth acceleration and some growth retardation. The most favoured ones will overgrow the rest, thus affecting the biodiversity in the flora through the mechanisms of eutrophication and selective parasitic injuries. The last mechanism will occur because of the higher sugar and starch content of the leaves.
The agriculture might be affected because many of the carbon dioxide damage sensitive plants are nutritious crops, essential for the food production, especially in the third world.

Sorry muso I should have been a bit more clear.

I'm totally against trying to scrub CO2 from the atmosphere, if we try to do that we will bugger the Earth up for sure.

I'ld rather hot than cold.

When I say to use scrubbers, I mean when the CO2 comes out at the back end of the power stations

Insects Take A Bigger Bite Out Of Plants In A Higher Carbon Dioxide World

What happened to the insects did they grow bigger mouths???

Did they grow bigger because of all the nourishment.

Besides how do they know this, currently we have some of the lowest amounts of CO2 in our history, only one other time has CO2 been this low in our atmosphere.

Cant buy that one.

Cant buy that one either, plants adjust.

Take two identical plants put one outside your window ledge and the other in a greenhouse.

Both will live and flourish, its just one will be bigger than the other.

Plants have coped with 20 times the CO2 we have today and flourished.

Different species. It's possible for plants to adapt, but not in such a short time.

You don't get the reduced calcification rate part either. I'll explain it some other time.

I don't have enough time right now.

What kind of plants? Land plants? 20 times 400 is 8000.

I think you'll find that 7000 marked the upper level of the error bars in the original study, not the concentration.  (It's also very speculative because two other studies quote figures of around 400ppm for this period. )

Not even the most extreme study shows CO2 at that level. What kind of plants existed in the Cambrian Period. You can Google that one, but I happen to know because I did Geology up to second year Uni.

The Missing Hotspot

21 July 2008

Last major revision 22 Mar 2009, Last minor revision 18 Sept 2010

Web address: http://sciencespeak.com/MissingSignature.pdf

An easy two-page version of this paper is at sciencespeak.com/SimpleHotspot.pdf.

Summary

Each cause of global warming heats up the atmosphere in a distinctive pattern—its ―signature‖. According to IPPC climate theory, the signature of carbon emissions and the signature of warming due to all causes during the recent global warming both include a prominent ―hotspot‖ at about 10 – 12 km in the air over the tropics.

But the warming pattern observed by radiosondes during the recent global warming contains no trace of any such hotspot. Therefore:

1. IPCC climate theory is fundamentally wrong.

2. To the extent that IPCC climate theory is correct in predicting a hotspot due to extra carbon dioxide, we know that carbon emissions did not cause the recent global warming.

The hotspot is not incidental to IPCC climate theory—it lies at its heart, because the same water vapor feedback that produces the hotspot in IPCC climate theory also doubles or triples the temperature increases predicted by the IPCC climate models.

If the IPCC climate modellers just turn down the water vapor feedback in their models enough so their theoretical signatures match the observed warming patterns, then the predicted temperature increases due to projected carbon emissions are greatly reduced and are no longer of much concern.

The radiosonde data shocked the alarmists, who expected a hotspot to confirm their theory. Alarmists now dispute the radiosonde data, saying it is so poor that it cannot show any pattern.

But radiosondes can reliably detect temperature differences of 0.1°C, and the hotspot would be at least 0.6°C warmer. And there were hundreds of radiosondes—they cannot all have missed it.

Alarmists now distract people away from the hotspot issue, and often give the impression that they found the hotspot without actually claiming they have.

Scarcely anyone knows about the missing hotspot and its significance. (Which proves that alarmists do not tell us when they find evidence against their idea that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming.)

Climate Sensitivity Reconsidered

The following article has not undergone any scientific peer review, since that is not normal procedure for American Physical Society newsletters. The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007: "Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate."

By Christopher Monckton of Brenchley

Abstract

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007) concluded that anthropogenic CO2 emissions probably caused more than half of the “global warming” of the past 50 years and would cause further rapid warming. However, global mean surface temperature has not risen since 1998 and may have fallen since late 2001. The present analysis suggests that the failure of the IPCC’s models to predict this and many other climatic phenomena arises from defects in its evaluation of the three factors whose product is climate sensitivity:
1.Radiative forcing ΔF;
2.The no-feedbacks climate sensitivity parameter κ; and
3.The feedback multiplier ƒ.

Some reasons why the IPCC’s estimates may be excessive and unsafe are explained. More importantly, the conclusion is that, perhaps, there is no “climate crisis”, and that currently-fashionable efforts by governments to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions are pointless, may be ill-conceived, and could even be harmful.

No it isn't. It's not crucial to anything. A hot spot in the tropopause is a result of any forcing resulting in warming - direct solar, increased CO2, anything.

To me, Dave's argument (we are not worthy) is:

1. The hot spot that they can't find (actually they can, once they correct for noise) can be caused by any kind of warming. (Dave said it himself- see the highlighted text).

2. Because the hot spot isn't there (of course we know otherwise), it must be due to a failure of CO2 (as opposed to any cause) to cause warming.

Meanwhile there is evidence of global warming.

Can you see the logical fallacy?  Think about it. Who is he trying to kid? Joanne Nova?

They kind a forgot that where coming out of a glaciation period, naturally temperature are going to go up.

Like I keep saying today we have some of the coolest temperature we have ever had, we also have some of the lowest amounts of CO2 in our atmosphere that we have ever had.

So when the IPCC says to you and me that ALL the warming is due to manmade CO2 emissions, I find it hard that say a person like your self who is educated will not think for themselves and do a bit of research.

The "because we say so" line doesn't gell with Aussies.

There wont be any greenhouse effect because today we have some of the lowest amounts of CO2 in our atmosphere ever.

We also have some of the coolest temperatures ever.

If we were going to have a runaway greenhouse effect it would have happened millions of years ago when we had 20 times the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere than we have today.

But guess what not even 20 times the amount caused a runaway greenhouse effect.

So what's the problem today........????

You mean the consensus on AGW.....??

Well here is your consensus, hardly reassuring....!!!!

Quote:
That Scientific Global Warming Consensus…Not! – Forbes

By Larry Bell

So where did that famous “consensus” claim that “98% of all scientists believe in global warming” come from?

It originated from an endlessly reported 2009 American Geophysical Union (AGU) survey consisting of an intentionally brief two-minute, two question online survey sent to 10,257 earth scientists by two researchers at the University of Illinois.

Of the about 3.000 who responded, 82% answered “yes” to the second question, which like the first, most people I know would also have agreed with.

Then of those, only a small subset, just 77 who had been successful in getting more than half of their papers recently accepted by peer-reviewed climate science journals, were considered in their survey statistic.

That “98% all scientists” referred to a laughably puny number of 75 of those 77 who answered “yes”.

That anything-but-scientific survey asked two questions.

The first:

“When compared with pre-1800s levels, do you think that mean global temperatures have generally risen, fallen, or remained relatively constant?”

Few would be expected to dispute this…the planet began thawing out of the “Little Ice Age” in the middle 19th century, predating the Industrial Revolution. (That was the coldest period since the last real Ice Age ended roughly 10,000 years ago.)

The second question asked:

“Do you think human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures?”

So what constitutes “significant”? Does “changing” include both cooling and warming… and for both “better” and “worse”? And which contributions…does this include land use changes, such as agriculture and deforestation?

This has been demonstrated to be false and you didn't even comment on the data.

Not a runaway greenhouse effect, but then nobody is saying that it is.

Now do some Googling and tell me what a runaway Greenhouse effect is. I won't do it because you are obviously not paying attention.

You must have a severe case of RSI with all the stirring that you've done. Have you had a holiday yet?

Now pay attention:

A runaway greenhouse effect is a process in which a net positive feedback between surface temperature and atmospheric opacity increases the strength of the greenhouse effect on a planet until its oceans boil away. An example of this is believed to have happened in the early history of Venus. On the Earth, the IPCC states that "a 'runaway greenhouse effect'—analogous to Venus—appears to have virtually no chance of being induced by anthropogenic activities

Did you understand that?

Thanks for that muso.

Everything the IPCC have predicted thus far from their computer circulation models has been proven wrong or exaggerated.

Their is no hot spot.......!!!!

The oceans are rising in concert with the earth's cycle of cold and warm climate.

Their is no correlation between CO2 & temperature.

The melting north pole - this process started a couple of hundred years ago, man's miniscule amount of CO2 emissions didn't start this phenomenon.

With all the above and the political nature of the IPCC to persuade people that AGW is real, its no wonder people are turning their heads at the AGW religion.

Hopefully more leaders around the world will follow Abbotts lead and toss the AGW hypothesis in the trash can where it belongs.

Do you have a short hand list of the worries of AGW?
I'm going to assume; Ocean levels, ocean acidification, extreme weather events, compounded warming rather than runaway?

Does the IPCC or anyone who proposes AGW, have a list of any net potential positives of c02 increases? (for example increased greening of the earth and or increased precipitation helping crop yields/plants that absorb c02)

Yes and yes. It's in the AR4 Working Group II report.

This diagram summarises the risks. It's from AR4. I'm a bit suss about the leaked AR5. It's a little bit big to post directly on the forum:

This refers to the Working Group II Report for further details. Here is the link:
