if the policy were watertight, then Abbott could say what he likes and it would matter nought. If it is not water-tight, it will fail with or without Abbotts comments. The boat smugglers are not stupid people you know. If there is a flaw they will find it with our without Abbott's help.

Your problem is that you KNOW the policy is another Rudd crap-fest, made on the run and full of holes.

Tony doesn't have to undermine anything, because Labor's plan is no deterrent.
Especially not if PNG will not process children under 18 or women.
They still will come here.
Or men if they are married to a female on the boat.
Or those that are shown to be not genuine refugees.
Labors policy on the run has more holes in it than a packet of swiss cheese.
Wait till the women and kids pile onto the leaky boats with single men claiming to be the husbands.
Add to that all those passports and other ID being chucked over the side and what have we got then?
As you know, it's Tony's job to hold the government to account for it's bad policies.
PNG ministers today stated that any that are resettled in PNG will have to wait 8 years to get citizenship, AND demonstrate the ability to converse in one of PNG's local languages.
Fat chance of that.
KRudd wasn't quite telling the truth last Friday during the grand announcement unfortunately.
This is another fine example of Labors policy on the run.
Why am I so surprised?
Even Graham Richardson today opened up to the media and told them what this policy really is.
