I never much like speed cameras, but after my wife received a $100 fine for going 52km/h at 3:58pm, I absoluetley hate them.  (the limit in school zones is 40km/h from 2:30 - 4pm, even though kids are around for only ~15 minutes)

Nothing to do with safety, everything to do with $$$.

School zones are clearly marked.

Most cars have a clock.

If you don't go over the speed limit, you don't have to pay out any $$$

If you do go over the limit, your money is spent on various road safety programs.

I can't see a problem.

Yes, well with all due respect, what you cant see could fill a warehouse.

Can your wife read, and understand, traffic signs?

Can she tell the time?

Can she read a speedometer?

Even though she's married to you, I'm still going to giver her the benefit of the doubt and assume that the answer is "yes" to all three questions.

Yet, she still got fined for speeding.

Perhaps there is a problem.

By that do you mean it goes towards the creation of more speed cameras?

I heard somewhere that up to one third of profits goes towards road trauma facilities, but if that's government jargon, the figures are obviously dodgy.

That's what they say:

"A third of the money collected from speed and redlight camera infringements goes into the Road Trauma Trust Fund and is spent on various road safety programs."

http://www.police.wa.gov.au/Traffic/CamerasCutCrashes/Camerasworkwhy/Cameramyths...

To be honest, I don't really care where the money goes: none of it is mine.

I've found a sneaky little way of getting out of paying speeding fines: I don't speed.

Yes, that's where I saw it. I don't know if Victoria spouts the same, but reading between the lines, I would assume they are talking about profits and not gross revenue.

I would assume that a lot of Victoria's revenue still goes towards the creation of new and unusual wars even though Tenix lost the contract.
Let's look up our new contractor "Serco" shall we?

Ahhh there you go  Grin :

Nope, not allowed to post that link? Funny about that.
Please try copy/paste

Anyway, here's an overview from Wikipedia

Quote:
Serco Group plc is a British[3] government services company based in Hook, North Hampshire in the United Kingdom. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. Among its operations are public and private transport and traffic control, aviation, military and nuclear weapons contracts, detention centres and prisons, and schools.

There are several blindingly obvious problems, not least of which is your propensity to feign ignorance for trolling purposes. I do not judge, but find another mark, ma'am.

How often is your watch 5 mins out when compared to someone else's? To book someone at 3.58 is a joke ... there are no kids at that time, anyway. Same on pupil free day at the end of the xmas holidays .. I've no idea when school resumes, I just look for when kids are about ... reserving the first day for teachers only and then booking people for doing 50km, but aren't aware that 'shool is officially back on' is also a joke ... it's just revenue raising ...SUnday I could do 55km in the same spot, Monday it's speeding. It's a farce.

My clock certainly could be incorrect, which is why I make a habit of slowing down in school zones all the time (it's just a 10kph reduction in most cases).  It's hardly an effort.

And, kids are around at 4pm: many schools have after hours care on the school grounds.  Kids are being picked up as late as 6pm at some schools.

I have no idea when school terms are either, which is exactly why I just make a habit of reducing my speed through school zones all the time.

Plus, I have absolutely no problem with revenue raising.  I'm always quite curious as to why people would object to revenue being raised.    Undecided

So you would be happy for "Serco" to run operations as they do in Victoria?

Quote:
SPEED-CAMERA operations look set to be privatised in WA, prompting fears that profiteering might overtake road-safety priorities.

Police Minister Rob Johnson revealed yesterday that his staff had been involved in ``introductory meetings'' with British firm Serco, which wanted to run WA's multimillion-dollar speed-camera operations.
...

Did you even look at what this company runs?

Obviously a lot of proceeds from Victoria are going towards ventures such as UK and U.S. military missions.

Quote:
What is Serco hiding?

Date: May 7, 2013

The influx of asylum seekers may be a matter of national acrimony but there are those who welcome the boats with open arms and broad smiles. The British multinational which operates Australia's detention centres is one of them.

Serco is rolling in it. According to its opaque financial statements which have just been filed, Serco Australia Pty Ltd enjoyed a rise in net profit from $49 million to $128 million last year. ...

...Nine years ago, the company prepared a 'general purpose' financial report for the year ended December 31, 2003. The auditor was Deloitte. Then, Serco had 1343 employees, $127 million in revenues and $63 million in gross assets.

...Somehow since then, Serco and its auditors have managed to transmogrify this reporting entity into a non-reporting entity. It is a gross failure in disclosure and accountability, says accounting expert from the University of NSW, Jeff Knapp. It is a failure, he says, which represents the extent to which 'financial reporting among Australia's leading proprietary companies has become a shambles”.

..But there is a more plausible explanation, and that is that Deloitte isn't exactly over-servicing its large proprietary client and has just pocketed its $1 million in audit fees without getting the dates right. It probably meant to say 2012.

...“Serco and Deloitte seem to have taken a path of doing whatever it takes to avoid disclosures,” says Jeff Knapp. “Serco and Deloitte have some explaining to do. Who is going to hold them to account? The government, the corporate regulator (ASIC), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia?

Victoria in focus

Interestingly for Victorians, the 2012 year accounts for Serco Traffic Camera Services (Vic) Pty Ltd (STCV) are out.
And business is good. Net profit after tax increased to $3.5 million on revenues of $32 million in the 2012 year.
...

http://www.smh.com.au/business/what-is-serco-hiding-20130507-2j4pv.html

That's gotta make us feel a whole safer that Serco are enjoying massively rising annual profits.  Roll Eyes

Nope.

However, I have no problem with the WA Police using speed cameras to raise revenue that "goes into the Road Trauma Trust Fund and is spent on various road safety programs."

no more than you will find wondering the streets on a weekend. I'm in an area surrounded with 3 schools, and apart from 30 mins between 8.45 and 9.15 and 30 mins between 2.45 and 3.15, the neighbourhood is as quite as any other neighbourhood street with no real increase in traffic, either pedestrian or motorised.

I didn't say I have a problem with revenue raising, I have a problem with revenue raising diguised as road safety ... call a spade a spade and stop making sh1t up.
