Rich lister caught in high-speed Albert Park spin

Date
    May 16, 2013

Multimillionaire online retail warrior Ruslan Kogan has been banned from driving for six months after a high-speed spin on Melbourne's Grand Prix circuit.

Kogan, 30, a regular on BRW's rich list – including its 2011 wealthiest self-made person under 30 – had his BMW coupe impounded after police eventually caught up to him.     Huh

Melbourne Magistrates Court heard his speed was detected at 85 kilometres an hour in a 50 speed limit zone at 4.30pm on October 30, 2011.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Stuart Pontil said on Wednesday police tried to catch up with Kogan who continued driving at high speed around the Albert Park Lake.

Senior Constable Pontil said he was intercepted in Aughtie Drive where his car was impounded because of the excessive speed.

Kogan was originally charged with driving at a dangerous speed. Police had alleged it was 110 kilometres an hour but the charge was amended to reflect the lower reading.

He pleaded guilty to exceeding the speed limit and admitted two driving prior convictions, including one for speeding.

His Sydney-based lawyer Dennis Miralis highlighted Kogan's substantial charity work, but magistrate John Hardy said he had no discretion under Victorian law but to cancel his licence for six months.

He also fined him $500.

When Mr Miralis later sought leave to appeal the decision, Mr Hardy advised him any appeal was doomed to fail and he might instead seek a review of his orders to the Supreme Court.

He described the application as "nothing short of a blatant misuse" of the appeal process, but allowed Kogan to drive pending his appeal in September.

Founder and CEO of Kogan, he has made a fortune selling cut-price electrical goods direct to the public via the internet. His website describes him as a "serial entrepreneur, having created and run many successful businesses".     Smiley

"He is one of the pioneers of online retail in Australia, and his internet ventures have expanded to include a global footprint," with company operations in Australia, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.

It adds: "His company has been in a constant war of words with Australian retailers Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi, and the UK's Currys and John Lewis."     Smiley

One must ask what this mans secret is.  How is he so successful?.    Fair prices, not rip off prices like some of the retailer here.     Wink

Funny, isn't it, how Vict-whorian cops seem to have a 'thing' about busting celebrities for, essentially, smack-all?

Kogan's by no means the first.

These are the knuckle-draggers who booked Lewis Hamilton, of all people, for screeching his tyres.

85kph?

Insane speed!

This person must be a formula one driver himself to be able to handle a car at such incredible speeds!

So they impound your car for mid range speeding now?
Where do they say that is the penalty? What's the go these days, the cops get to arbitrarily decide on what they want to call the offense?

He is not above the law.  Lewis Hamilton wasn't above the law.  You break it, you do the time.   A 35km/h difference is considered substantial enough to impound the car, particularly after the driver ignored the police car chasing him.  Serves him right.  Roll Eyes

You're in trouble if that's the case. You should get yourself a friend who is an awesomely superb driver and let her do it for you. Just in case. You can pay her in stinky cheese, pickles and pate.

Given that it was victorian police he should be grateful he wasnt shot. Everytime you hear about a fatal police shooting the byline seems to read MELBOURNE!

The key point is that note how he was caught driving an expensive imported German made car Wink It wasn't a Holden or Ford. When people get wealthy here the first car they usually buy is an expensive German imported car. The German car industry has done well out of Australia as it has done so the rest of the world Wink What's their secret longloser ? What do the Germans know that Holden and Ford don't ? Even after all of the money that has been doled out to Holden and Ford over the years they still don't know the secrets to making a successful product that is well sort after world wide Cheesy LOL

or perhaps the germans have a domestic market 4 times ours and an extended domestic market (Europe) of a billion people. Perhaps those economies of scale permit them to build super-expensive high performance cars that will sell 1500 profitable units but over here would be pushing to sell 25.

For someone who claims to be a businessman you have zero idea of so many manufacturing and business realities. The current FPV will outperform a BMW or Mercedes of twice the price and the new HSV will exceed the performance of all but the $400K+ super cars (for 1/4 of the price). Our car industry's problems are not ability but rather market size and the economics of scale. You of course have no idea.

BTW do you know what the most expensive car (by far) was?  only 6 were made at a combined cost of $63M.  and it was electric of course. a two seater and no airconditioning and a top speed of 18lm/hr

And yet everybody is still willing to pay a premium for Mercs, Audis and Beemas !! Nobody wants your Ford FPV rubbish !!

And there's nothing stopping Holden and Ford chasing after the same markets. What's their excuse apart from producing a way inferior product. Just heard another Ford the other day with squeaky suspension. Still haven't solved that problem since the days of the old Ford XB Cheesy LOL

everybody??? holden and ford outsell merc and BMW 1000:1  And my FPV is faster thana BMW at double the price and if you want to pay for the name, go ahead. But if you've actually driven these brands, you would know that the lower end are of no better quality than the local cars and a damned sight more expensive.  and repariing them is FIVE TIMES as expensive.

but you sitll drive a multi-coloured 20yo commodore. what would you know about modern cars?

Only we treat Mercs as expensive cars ... in many European countries they are used as taxi's because they are no more expensive than the other cars .... of course, being Australia, we get ripped off yet again.
