Used 'correctly' the quote button can be a handy tool. All to often it's used deliberately to obscure what's being said, by pushing it off the page; or at the least used thoughtlessly. It's not hard to modify your post. On the Guardian we used to call two or more posts by the same person 'mentalist wallpaper'. Which was abreviated in time, (3 post ment) and treated with derision.

Similar is the kind of formatting 'skill' used by Yadda and DRAH real conversation killers that ought to be moderated for the common good.

Agree, there's nothing more annoying than half a page of nested quotes
with a single line of off-topic comment or snide remark at the bottom.

Especially when it goes on for page after page...  Angry

As for formatting, I tend to format my posts as I would if type-setting for
a newspaper or magazine because it makes them easier to read on a
wide-screen page.

It's probably a hang-over from my newspaper days...  Wink

A fine example of a 'proper' post Kat  Wink Though, as you can see, when the post you're referring to, immediatly precedes, there's really no need for the quote at all.

but that can get confusing when 2 or more people post on the same thread at the same time, by the time your response appears on the screen you can have a completely different comment above your comment, confusing the next person to come along and read it.

That's why I usually only quote the person/post I'm replying
to, whether they're the last to post or several posts back.

Saves confusion.

Fair comment, I did consider that, but mostly it's not that busy. I considered it to be a judgement call, but it's fair to be on the safe side.

If forums were more like facebook and you could drop anyone that doesn't agree with you then they wouldn't be forums @ all would they.
