While the echo chamber resounds with negativity and unhelpful predictions of gloom, economic indicators paint a much brighter story. Over the past three years, output in the Australian economy has increased by 9 per cent, the number of people with jobs has risen by over half a million, leaving unemployment unchanged at 5.4 per cent, and the underlying inflation has averaged 2½ per cent, well within the RBA's comfort range. A truly remarkable outcome considering our external situation.

In the words of Philip Lowe, Deputy Governor of the RBA, this represents a very good outcome.

Quote:
By the standards of most other countries, this represents a very good outcome and a high degree of internal balance. Remarkably, we have achieved this balance despite experiencing the biggest boom in business investment and the largest rise in the terms of trade for over a hundred years. In the past, much smaller investment and terms of trade booms caused outbreaks of inflation and the emergence of other imbalances in the economy. On this occasion this has not happened. The investment boom has not led to a large increase in the current account deficit. There has not been an explosion in credit. Increases in asset prices have generally been contained. And the average level of interest rates has been below the long-term average, despite the very significant additional demand generated by the record levels of investment and the terms of trade.

But don't expect to be hearing this story from the Murdoch press.

You paint a rosy picture but, if you are right, how come the country is $300 billions in the red?

Can you count 300 billion on your fingers, mate?

Creating jobs out of borrowed money is not the best way to go--

AAA ratings say otherwise, longy. How can you substantiate the argument that we have too much debt.

Easy - we have too much debt and Swan is spending far in excess of what he receives in revenue! If he were running a business, it'd have been declared bankrupt years ago and he'd have been sacked without the prospect of finding work ever again as a Treasurer. Best in the world my hairy backside!!!

But Swan isn't running a business. When Howard was treasurer he was prepared to do exactly the same thing.

By any measure the Australian government has low levels of debt.

What measure of debt are you using to imply we have a debt problem.

debt doesn become a problem only when it becomes difficult to service. that is not at all what it means. debt is also a problem when you borrow for things you don't need. it is also a problem when you borrow rather than cut your spending. debt is a problem when you treat it in a cavalier manner. Debt should be your last resort - not your first. and the biggest problem with debt is when you dont give much concern to the idea of paying it off.

The Australian economy is in good shape and Swan is a competent Treasurer.

Let's see if Abbott can bring to the table policies that have been costed and properly audited.

why should he? swan and rudd didn't in 2007!

you do realise that AAA ratings are given by ratings companies that use, to say the least odd methodologies and are the same ones that gave the plethora of failed banks in the GFC the same ratings?

you are following the tried and failed labor thinking of more debt, more debt and more and more of the same. Just because we have lower debt than most is hardly an endorsement of economic management. we had NO DEBT at the start of this crap govt while the countries you compare us to (when it suits you) had unsustainable levels even then. It is almost as if you think this is the year 5BL (before labor) instead of 2013. some things actually happened before your aster - the cowardly lion (Rudd) ascended the throne.

Saying something over and over again doesn't make it right. Can you justify why you believe we have a debt problem.

because the debt is still rising 5 years after the GFC. Gillard is coming up with policy after policy that is totally unfunded meaning MORE debt. The debt problem we have is that gillard and co are spending like drunken sailors while revenues are dropping. they are using debt to pay for day-to-day expenses. the trajectory of debt is ever-upwards. Responsible treasurers reign in debt before it becomes unsustainable not once you reach a euro-style problem.

Gee it could be the spending like a drunkin sailor continuing. The stalinist free speech and media laws. The tax that doesnt bring anywhere near the already spent money against it ...................... and on................. and on

And the tax we werent going to have that cripples exports and makes imports more attractive.

You are a walking liberal soundbite.

Stalinist media and free speach laws indeed. You may need to look Stalin up, it appears you don't know much about him or what he imposed on his people.

It would seem you dont know stalin at all and even less so, about the policies trying to be implemented.

Last time i saw, under Stalin the people were only allowed to read and see in the media what the government said that they could and any attempts to do otherwise met with severe sanctions and trips to labour camps.

Since you know so much, perhaps you can point to the relevant legislation or proposed legislation where that is going to be the case here.

Hahaha

So you make a big claim about stalin like medial laws from this government but you have no clue what his laws even were and then try and pretend that you don't have to back up your silly claims with anything..

Are you trying to be taken seriously? It doesn't appear so.

Although i shouldn't forget, you are just repeating liberal soundbites and trying to pass it off as some kind of an argument.

LOL

So now you are changing your argument. That's a start i suppose.

Perhaps now you can point out how what was proposed is "on the road" to what i described before regarding Stalin and the media.

Can you?

It's just electioneering.

Give the front bottom six months once he's in power and he'll be talking up the strengths of the Australian economy to every man, woman and their dog.

At that stage the Coalition cheer squad on here will be yelling like banshees about how how great the economy is and the Labor/Greens cheer squad will be saying how Mr Abbott has been f-cking up the economy - pretty much just roles reversed on here.

With a bit of luck... Labor will get back in after six years and we can all witness the online breaking of Maqqa's brain again, just like what we experienced on Yahoo back in 2007. F-ck that was funny... a meltdown combined with the encyclopedia of mental disorders.
