Hilarious. Alevine claims politics is meant to be academic and not sloganeering, then trots out the the biggest trendy slogans of them all: Xenophobia, racist, bigots.

But then again, those slogans are often used by trendy academic types, so he is right in a strange kind of way.

Firstly, if we are going to be accurate, they aren't slogans; they are labels.

But in reality there is nothing wrong with calling out xenophobia and bigotism when one sees it.  To claim otherwise simply because you don't like the words is just poor form.  And it is nothing more than putting shutters over your eyes. If you are being bigoted and/or xenophobic in your opinion then don't expect a person to give it legitimacy because of fear of offending.  And it isn't about being PC either; it's very simply what it is; a xenophobic argument that can of course be made given free speech, but don't expect for it to be accepted without it being called out for what it is.

And I've noticed it quite often from you Mistie. You like to pull the shutters down all the time by attemping to suggest it is somehow wrong to call someone xenophobic, for being xenophobic. Similar to how you like to call out Godwins law one too many times, to avoid having to answer a very legitimate point.

My main beef with these terms - xenophobia, racism etc - is that they aren't arguments or 'academic' in any shape or form. They are, as you even state yourself, labels and slogans.

These terms in no way refute someone's position on 'boat people' or refugees' or other races. They are designed to denigrate (and refute, but the leftists don't actually realise they don't refute a position); they possess connotations and denotions on lynching, gassing, etc. By labelling your opponent with such terms is to align him with such atrocities. Guilt by association.

jeez you are a reactionary old dude aren't you...
oooh conspircay to secretly help Labor..!!  wake up to youself ..

hmmm OK  forget that... you are too old in the brain to even be able to grasp new thoughts... you go by your  memories...

sadly there r people that will take up your idea... fearful, narrow-minded idiots I'd call you.

Hey...  let me give you an example...

I have an older Kiwi couple as  dear friends..  but I was astonished to hear....   that a doz or so yrs ago,  when they had shifted here... a letter arrived in the mail box...  not addressed to them..   from the Electoral Commission,  ..  saying  the people at the address ( not them)  should be enrolled to vote.
So they DID,  and then, subsequently voted in a Fed election.

When they finally figured it out they rang the EC ,, and were told.. oh no... you can't vote,,, but not to worry.. your vote would have had no impact on the outcome,, so forget it... but don't vote again, unless you are Aus citizens... !!

So the Liberal Media dishonest spin has worked?

There is no honest reason?

Where's the dishonesty? Labor actually DID introduce a carbon dioxide tax, despite promising not to do so. Labor actually has had not so much an increase as a FLOOD of illegal immigrants since Rudd scrapped the Pacific Solution - more than 30,000 since 2008 and counting. Lets not forget the debt, not helped by Swan handing out money left, right and centre through carbon dioxide tax compo, stimulus packages that were rorted to no end and increasing the tax-free threshold to $18k in a move that will severely cut into revenue the government could have received. So where is the dishonesty in that???

Yet both parties recognize it is an "issue" and are campaigning against each other to sell their version of off-shore processing and refugee reduction.

All on the advice of the panel who looked in depth at it.
Or is Air Marshall Angus Houston a racist as well in your eyes??

Both major parties have virtually identical policies retard.

The whole world is moving to carbon pricing - Tony will not change that.

Strange. India's Environmental Minister said carbon pricing 'wasn't a priority right now'.
You know India?
The 3rd worst polluter in the world?

The 3rd worst polluter in the world - that has a carbon tax.
On July 1, 2010 India introduced a nationwide carbon tax of 50 rupees per metric tonne ($1.07/t) of coal both produced and imported into India.[50] In India coal is used to power more than half of the country's electricity generation.

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told reporters in June 2010 that a domestic tax should come before a global carbon tax, and India has imposed one while others debate the issue

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_tax#India

As I said - carbon pricing is here to stay.  Deniers like Abbott will not change that,

The same Jairam Ramesh?

"India has a greater priority in poverty reduction than the issue of carbon reduction.
India's view is that it is the responsibility of the western world developed nations to act first to fix a problem they created"

Must be another bloke then seeing as you think he is such a fan.

By the way $1.07???????????

Don't newcomers have to reside two years before they can apply for citizenship and then be eligible to vote?

I hope I'm not wrong?

Heard something most disturbing on this very subject this very night. It seems Labor has had another dastardly idea for helping them in an election.

Letters will be addressed not to "voters" but "persons" to enter their name on the electoral roll.

Now, is that to allow the non-eligible to vote, e.g. boatpeople?

I'd say so, OS. It would seem that Labor are now so desperate they're targeting the 5000-odd non-citizens held in detention to vote for them.

The boat people will flee from the detention centres or community placements to vote on election day, only to be told they're non-citizens and can't vote. Dastardly!

Another cunning plot from the ALP.

Lets remember Gilliards dishonest spins back in 2010, especially in the end when she called the carbon tax at that forum, carbon pricing and that she would seek a CONSENSUS before implementing such a policy.

O.K. alevine today CS.R. shed 152 jobs and closed its glass making factory at Ingleburn. A big factor in this was the burgeoning strain of the Carbon Tax. They will now import their glass from countries that don't have this sh.tty tax and in the meantime they will save 27 million dollars by doing so.

Unless you've been watching the news with your eyes closed and tissues stuck in your ears you would have noted just how many of our manufacturing industries have folded.

The freaking useless Carbon Tax was the last straw for many of these traditional companies. If you want more examples find them yourself, I'm not doing your bloody homework for you.

Have you got the press release that states it was the Carbon tax?

Manufacturing is folding primarily due to our inability to sell the value of an Australian product vs. the value of an Asian product and the difference in our currencies (ie, the cost of manufacturing and then exporting it due to the current Aussie Dollar is TOO HIGH).  I'm all for the reserve bank entering the currency wars. I think it's a necessity.  It's criminal to sit by and watch other countries fight tooth and nail to reduce their currency while ours remains this inflated.

As for homework - you're the one suggesting the carbon tax has added too much cost. DO YOUR HOMEWORK and OFFER EXAMPLES to SUSTAIN YOUR ARGUMENT. Otherwise don't post unfounded crap.

O-I/ACI glass will lose over 500,000,000 units to glass production in China this year alone.

2 reasons, the high Oz $ and high energy costs of production, made worse by the carbon tax.

Oh, i don't have any press releases for you, i only know this becuase i work with these people that supply our glass, and they fear for their industry and jobs.

Nothing comes to mind...  so what was the problem again...  you know?  how has it affected YOU???

Er... it makes no difference to 'climate change' or whatever it is called today. But it was introduced to make a difference. It ain't.

Anyway, on 'diversity':
“As you know, if you go to the average American Australian newsroom you can have diversity of race, diversity of gender, diversity of orientation — everything except the only diversity that matters, which is diversity of thought. And the left does not want to celebrate diversity of thought. They rage against so-called intolerance, yet they themselves are stupefyingly intolerant.”

There's a vid at this link, watch it and then ask yourself - are you stupefyingly intolerant of view that do not conform to the pieties du jour?
