Discount supermarket ALDI to offer cut-price mobile deals

    February 28, 2013

DISCOUNT supermarket ALDI is set to shake up Australia's mobile phone market by offering low-cost deals.     Smiley

The supermarket will start selling pre-paid phone plans along with groceries in a move tipped to put pressure on big telcos Telstra and Optus.

The German grocery chain has offered cut-price calls, text and data in Europe for several years.

A consumer advocate said customers using low-cost mobile phone operators could potentially halve bills compared with contracts with big players.     Smiley

ALDImobile, to be launched on Wednesday, will use part of Telstra's 3G network.

Australian Communications Consumer Action Network spokeswoman Elise Davidson described the expansion as a "significant development".

She said competition from emerging mobile phone operators such as Kogan Mobile, Amaysim and ALDI was good news for consumers.     Smiley

"There are signs that competition is definitely heating up," Ms Davidson said.

Woolworths Mobile already offers customers pre-paid recharge deals via the Optus network.

Ms Davidson said customers with their own handsets potentially could save substantially when switching to low-cost operators who supplied SIM cards, rather than being locked into contracts with big players.

Mobile phone customers on contracts commonly pay $50 to $70 a month.

"If you are off a contract and have your own handset outright, it can be a lot cheaper," Ms Davidson said.

"You can end up paying half as much per month for the same or more value."

Ms Davidson said the low-cost mobile phone service model, popular in Europe and Asia, appealed to customers who did not need to regularly upgrade handsets.

The ALDI move comes as Australians increasingly rely on mobile phones for communication.     Smiley

An Australian Competition and Consumer Commission telecommunications report, released this week, revealed more time was spent making calls from mobile phones than fixed lines last financial year for the first time.

I am with TPG and a high end user...I am paying $20 PER MONTH for calls and limitless texts.

Their assistance line is also excellent.  Couldn't do better than that.

Nothing wrong with Aldi's quality ... wish others would learn from it ...

Had an acer laptop once, had 12 months warranty, on the 13th month I had to throw it away ... cooked itself. Have a $4000 HP desktop, 2 yrs old, always seems to give me problems ... have another $700 aldi desktop, 3yrs old .... never missed a beat. They are networked and share all the same programmes and everything else ..

I'd take Aldi's quality over all the overrated crap at harvey norman any day of the week.

I bought one of those pipe wrenches with the rubber strap from Aldi. It broke the first time I used it.

rubber strap? pipe wrench? never heard of one ... you sure it wasn't a oil filter wrench? that would probably break if you tried to use it on a pipe ....

I got a telstra prepaid about 6-7 years ago that was really bad price for calls but gave me a year of nor renewing it before it expired. I renewed it with $30 when they had a special deal on a few times and as a result i have a phone that will accept incoming calls only until 2023.

Since i have free outgoing calls with my internet plan (different provider) on another phone i have it made Smiley

Not sure. Why would you need a wrench for an oil filter?

I have made something similar out of rope and a piece of wood before. You wrap the rope around the pipe for grip, so the piece of wood has something to bite into. The design seems a bit over the top for an oil filter. Plus it came in 3 different sizes.

you need a wrench to take of oil filters because usually they don't give you enough room to get your hands around them, especially in the more modern cars. the wrench allows you to wrap the rubber around the filter and the handle gives you the leverage you need with minimal room.
