*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *

Hah, exactly Borg. The world does conspire...

Dear Emma, here is hoping that the truth of the exponential graph- that it's rate of change is itself exponential and therefore represents the unsustainable mathematical dreams imagined only by the greedy from planet accountant- is made common knowledge to the world.

The speech by Obama, if acted upon, can only give the world hope.

It is my opinion that the world has lost faith due to things such as terrorism. Terrorism will continue to be a problem.

Politics is all human relations and there is no point in making things more difficult than they have to be unless you are setting traps.

Yes, America putting their energy(oops!  Grin) into solving global warming means they have to take it out of something else and I presume that leaves America less time for evil.

It's a vulnerability is what I'm saying.... therefore it's a big step- and I applaud Obama for making it!

Well you never know eh?

Obama has to get some backing to do anything. It IS an historic position for the American President to take,  given their resistance to global efforts  in favour of 'economic reality'  Roll Eyes in the past.

It'll be the will of the people........one way or the other....  all over the world.

It always starts with words: the knockers may call it symbolism but all those business types know it really amounts to a plan.

you are so right
Deathray

Words are always the start... we have no other way of communicating ...
en masse...
Words  portraying ideas... Hope there IS a plan. Smiley

I s'pose I'm just repeating your words... in another way.

I find it is always best to visualise the required outcome before proceeding.
Internally verbalise the idea.

If I don't..  I have poorer outcomes...  always....

and I often don't  Huh

like  most all of us.

The mother of all skill...

THERE IS THE LIGHT(WHOAH, THAT GUY WAS RIGHT!  Huh  Cool Cool) AND THERE IS DARKNESS: STRIVE TOWARDS THE LIGHT SIDE AND THE POWER OF THE FLOW KEEPS THEM IN HARMONY.. or something like that!

All these daddy lovers who think leftys don't know business forget that EFFICIENCY BREEDS SUCCESS!

--> the daddy lovers of the liberal voting brigade just want to keep the status quo for the sake of keeping the status quo... they think it suits their interests but they're just sheep too scared to embrace ideas!

They forget that higher ideals win... and that means business will go down that path sooner or later

They're a bunch of sheep!

It takes time: the curve of Elisabeth Kubler Ross says so... a 'conservative'point of view is afterall legitimate: they just forget that a çonservative'point of view doesn't mean you are scared of change, just careful about embracing it!

Global Warming is an insurance problem- business will embrace it because the insurers will make them!

  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy  Cool

if it can be brought into the light for the hide-bound traditionalists..!?

we need an outrageously successful  renewable energy bbreakthrough...  we need to spend money on it... rather than how to further plunder fossil fuel stocks...
this would seem self-evident... and there ARE some fab ideas ...working ideas... out there...
None have serious Govt support though.. do they??

It reflects the power of money..

...it's all year 11 economics: subsidies are government interference in the imaginary free-market idea.

It's hard to get off of them, like drugs.

Subsidies are like drugs.

Reagan famously said: if it moves tax it; if it keeps moving regulate it: and if it stops moving subsidise it.

Subsidising something that the free-markets wouldn't naturally choose(remember, the 'free market'is an idea that exists in your head... they don't exist i.e. there is always some government interference!!) means that you're always going to have a hard time getting rid of those subsidies once life has clung like a vine to the industry that has set up around it.

Life has set itself up around a subsidised fossil fuel industry.

It's all year 11 economics: it really is!  Wink IN YEAR 11 THEY WARN YOU OF INTERFENCE IN THE FREE-MARKET: BUT THE FREE-MARKET IS AN IDEA THAT EXISTS ONLY IN YOUR HEAD- PRACTICALLY SUBSIDIES HAVE TO EXIST AS SOMEBUSINESS VENTURES ARE JUST TOO RISKY WITHOUT THE GREASING OF THE PALMS FROM GOVT!

SUBSIDIES ARE FREE-KICKS!

GLOBAL WARMING ISN'T A FREE-MARKET FAILURE...IT'S A MIXED-MARKET FAILURE!

PEOPLE SAY MARKET FAILURE FOR SHORT,... FORGETTING THE SUBSIDIES THAT WENT IN TO CREATING THE PROBLEM!

Emma wrote on Feb 18th, 2013 at 12:57am:
you have hope that Business will come to the rescue??

Hope you're right.

Business aint bad: business is like water and flows toward the sea that is consumer demand! The law is the land it flows over!

Business finds a way to meet the demand of consumers and if it can't be done it can't be done.

Subsidies are given to make business flow better, if needed(reagan, remember!!): BUSINESS(OR THE MARKET) PROVIDE GOODS AND SERVICES TO THE POPULATION. Some services may need to be provided by Government, of course. This is called a mixed-market economy: don't let any jokers tell you it's a free-market: a free-market is an idea that exists in your head like democracy!)

IF IT MOVES, TAX IT, REMEMBER! IF IT'S NOT MOVING YOU CAN HARDLY TAX IT NOW CAN YOU. SO, SOMETIMES SUBSIDIES ARE NEEDED TO MAKE THINGS MOVE.

IF THE INDUSTRY CONCERNED WASN'T IMPORTANT THEN IT MIGHT NOT BE SUBSIDISED,BUT IF IT WAS- LIKE THE WORLDS ENERGY SOURCE OBVIOUSLY IS- THEN YOU SEE WHAT WE HAVE NOW.

So, the question becomes why isn't renewable energy subsidised and this is exactly what you're asking.

The power of money indeed: see, we're all just scared little creatures looking for a way to pay the rent/buy food and those born with a pile of money are under no obligation to give it away. Those who have the propensity to save money(a natural instinct to some but not all of us  Wink) would just pile it away in a bank account forever if they weren't given an incentive to spend it/put it back in the economy. Incentives are given to people to set up business and these competing ideas give us a rich tapestry called the western world.

Business aint bad. Business is made up of people that live life to the full but it all starts with people who are willing to save a big pile of money to get a loan from a bank and keep building that pile of money to employ more skilled and skilled people and this story goes on. This is what creates the world around us, global warming just being an unpriced negative externality of it.

Sure, some people are just scammers, but most business people simply play an honest game of selling what the consumer wants for an honest price always trying to make that price as cheap as their competitor via efficiency measures.

The law dictates what business can and can't do. people might play games within it but, hey, it all legitimate really. The stockmarket works because of INSIDER TRADING but what are you going to do- not have a stockmarket??

The stockmarket is a trap for the ilinformed but it makes our world turn. Mum and Dad investors got out of it a long time ago!!!

You could say it is the source of all our troubles however..... and that my friend would make a very interesting read!

I mean, the stockmarket does mean a lot of people get to stay at home and do nothing for a lifetime if they're in the know!

Governments collect taxes to provide the necessities of life for its citizens that the free-markets simply can't.

Until there is a pressing need for change the status quo/well worn path is always going to be the easiest solution.
