Same with shootings - it's not guns, it's the drugs they use to regulate our thoughts and emotions. These crazed shooters could just as easily knock a few off with a car, or a knife.

Very true, Mistie. Don’t criticize your own culture. Socialism is essentially Christian.

But it’s interesting to see societies like the Chinese adopt it. Under Confuscianism, socialism has a completely different groupthink edge to it - same with capitalism and individualism I might add.

Ideas and cultures have never been static or impermeable. The big ones are always exported, and always adapted to local conditions. Look at Christianity in Brazil - or Korea - or Tonga. It’s quite different.

We have a lot to be grateful for in this country, but a lot to be wary of too. Our greed has become all pervasive. We’ve become lonely and isolated. We get like this because we become commodified. We adapt to our own form of production. How could we not?

Socialism was invented to stop this alienation - to put the "Christ" back in Christmas as it were. The "equality" movement wouldn’t exist without Christianity, but it also wouldn’t exist without a lot of hopelessness and emptiness too.

Just look at the post-Christmas sales each year. What’s worse is finding yourself at those sales. How did we ever become like this?

This is why we have psych meds AND random shootings - alienation.

Marxism is Hegel with the highbrow German idealism bleached out of it. Marx wanted philosophy to be "of and in the world", not relying on abstracts like "spirit" to prop it up.

Communism was the brainchild of young Marx, who became a social democrat as he grew older. Communism was a strange experiment. It taught the world so much in such a short period of time. It was never practiced according to plan. For Marx, it could only work in developed, industrialized countries.

Communism is a social and political model. Socialism is as much an ideal as it is a political/economic fad. Look at medicine and teaching. Public hospitals and schools would not exist without socialist values. In the US, the introduction of universal education and health care were contested as socialism. Both passed the Supreme Court, but there are still strong suspicions in Amerika of socialised education and health care, and most of them religious. Home schooling is very popular in the US.

I can’t think of many in Australia who want this sort of society, but the critics of socialism always resort to the Amerikan tea bagger tradition.

America is a great country in my opinion - in spite of itself.

Actually, that's a good point about the early socialists being Christian, or being an extension of a particular idea found in Christianity. That's why today the real socialists are mostly only found in Christian circles. Who is feeding the homeless? Who is clothing the needy? Christian groups. I am not aware of any secular group doing these things (soulless government, bureaucratic institutions don't count).

I actually have much respect for these charity organisations. What I don't respect is the modern, secular, screaming, reactive socialist who whines about the evils of capitalism and does sweet f*ck all to help the needy.
