Space travel hibernation
Dec 13th, 2012 at 9:21pm

A frog can be frozen solid then wake up again months later when thawed out.

Could humans be genetically engineered to copy exactly what the frog does
so that people could be thawed out 100s or 1000s of years after being frozen?

If so humans could travel the long distances to our nearest stars & survive
without noticing any time passing & not requiring food or anything else
except a freezer & a computer to watch over them - inside their spaceship.

Also - they would not age at all.
They would - as far as they knew have travelled almost instantly to the stars.

Maybe modified humans will one day make that voyage?
This is way beyond our current technology but surely it's theoretically possible?

don't they do this with cryogenic suspension but they have to remove all of the blood first so it's not quite as straight forward with humans.

I am not aware of this actually working with humans yet the frog does it easily.
It has genetics designed to do it.

Spot -
It won't happen in our lifetime - I am talking 100s of years into the future.

The first step would be to map the entire genome of 2 different species of frogs -
one that doesn't survive being frozen & one that does.
Scientists/ genetic engineers - could then see what part of the DNA is different.
They could then try to insert the genes/section of gene from the one that does survive into
the one that doesn't.
If the one that normally doesn't survive can then be frozen they would
have found the genetic material that allows it to be frozen & survive.

The next step would be to insert that genetic material into a mammal such as a rat
to give it the same properties.
If that's successful they could try it on human embryos.

A new type of human super human being could then be created which could survive being frozen.

I doubt it Bobby....the amount of modification needed means the new 'super human beings' wouldn't actually BE human..

By all accounts this is pretty far in the future, but there is no reason it couldn't work.
Hopefully it doesn't take long because in the mean time the more realistic solutions wouldn't be nice, I imagine life spans would need to be shortened and babies would probably be cryogenically made, people don't last as long in space compared to on earth; at least not as happily.
But who knows what else will come up, problems can often be solved in a lot of ways.

Ahh yes. I can just see it now. I'm on a spaceship in care of 1,000 'sleepers', people who are in hibernation for very long periods of time. 100 years is the max stint.
I'm part of a small group of short-lived breeders who are onboard to maintain quality control. The natural resources of the ship only cater to our small group that flucuates with 50 personel max.
When I die, a Sleeper is awakened to replace me and instill new genes so the Crew gene pool isn't compromised. The greater the difference in gene combination the healthier-intelligent the child is.

...while I'm a Crew member. I get a bit naughty and have my wicked way with some female 'sleepers' Wink like a necrophiliac with dead bodies.
In fact, the 'Sleepers' are at the mercy of the Crew of Carers and its only the 'Sleepers' faith in God that allowed them to 'Rest in Peace' in our care.

Due to Political reasons one ship jettisoned all of its sleepers and stopped short of its original destination to land on another planet.

Another Crew devoured its cargo of Sleepers.

Another ship had one Crew member kill off all the crew then impregnated all its female sleepers with his sperm just as they reached the destination.

...and so on. Cheesy

That's a matter for debate.
Humans are certainly not going to populate the galaxy the way we are now.
We are not built for space travel.

Immortality of the human race.

We can't stay here forever.
One accident with a nuclear weapon, one large asteroid hit -  etc
& we'll all be toast.
