9th Grader Develops $12 Machine That Produces Renewable Energy From Ocean Currents

Hannah Herbst designed an ocean probe capable of powering desalination pumps in third-world countries.





15-year-old Hannah Herbst wants to bring renewable energy to developing countries, and is very close to doing just that.

The teen, from Boca Raton, Florida, was inspired by her 9-year-old pen pal in Ethiopia who has limited access to electricity. She told Business Insider: “I can’t even imagine a day without electricity.”

For this year’s Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, Hannah worked tirelessly to design a probe which can generate power and fresh water by harvesting it from ocean currents.

The recently-designed energy probe is made of recycled materials and costs just $12. It consists of a 3D-printed propeller, connected by a pulley inside a plastic PVC pipe to a hydroelectric generator, which converts the mechanical movement of ocean currents to usable electricity.




When Herbst tested the device in the Boca Raton Intracoastal Waterway, where the current comes in from the Atlantic Ocean, she was able to power a set of LED lights.

If the design were scaled up, she calculated, enough electricity could be produced to charge three car batteries at once in less than an hour. That’s enough energy to power saltwater desalination pumps to provide a source of fresh water for developing countries!

It could also power blood centrifuges for medical use, or coastal beacons for ship navigation.




This design won Hannah the title of “America’s Top Young Scientists” and $25,000 at the competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Her mentor for the project was 3M corporate scientist Jeffrey Emslander, whose research has helped the company reduce its emissions and produce its products using less energy. They are pictured together below.



The inspiring young teen intends to donate some of the new winnings to her Ethiopian pen pal, and toward a new building at her school. The rest will go into her college fund, she said.

Hannah also plans to keep working with her 3M mentor to improve her ocean energy device, and eventually deploy it in developing countries. When it is ready to share, she plans on making her finalized design open-source so that it is available to underdeveloped communities for free.

Herbst told FastCompany: “Everybody in the world can have access to the materials list and the data I got—everything you need to make this device. I really want to help my pen pal. I can’t imagine a day without energy in my life.”

Jim Murray has been electrifying the world for over 50 years. His lifetime of experience has produced dozens of patents, inventions and now a truly remarkable discovery that can fundamentally change the way that human beings use energy forever.

It was not long after graduation that Jim began seriously examining the work of Nikola Tesla. He was fascinated by Tesla’s incredible claims concerning power generation and transmission, and he vowed to rediscover the great scientist’s undisclosed secrets. Jim’s efforts eventually led him to individuals like Otis T. Carr, who claimed to have known Tesla personally. They also gave him a greater understanding of several lost Tesla secrets.

During his professional life, Jim has conducted research and experimentation on a variety of different technological applications all of which eventually contributed to the development of his SERPS (Switched Energy Resonance Power Supply) device.  This highly specialized electronic circuit has the ability to “Magnify” the effective power applied to it by nearly 50 times. When Jim coupled his device with his friend Paul Babcock’s patented ultra fast 5 nanosecond switching technology, they achieved a 4790% increase in electrical power compared to the input. This type of performance, if commercialized, would cause the largest electric utility companies to shake in their boots.

Jim explains:

Electric power is supplied by a special transformer to energize a resistive load. The undissipated  magnetic potential is then captured and stored temporarily, before being sent back to the source through the very same electrical load. This oscillating power has completely different properties than conventional electrical power, and actually reduces the total power required from the source.  The consequence of this energy dynamic is that the resistive load can be powered more than twice as efficiently, while the net power supplied by the line is reduced to a very small value. The implications of this technology for power conservation in the future are absolutely astonishing!

You would think they would care about air quality from car exhaust, but rather they force fines on CA truckers to use a DEF filter on the exhaust (called a boat anchor, in the hho industry) They are bankrupting California one truck at a time. Everyday a truck catches on fire due to the DEF filters, that only knock down the carbon to nano particles under 1 micron in size, undetectable to the exhaust sniffers. SMOG is now atomize into the air and floats for days, rather than the old carbon black flakes that fall to the ground after a trucks goes by. WATER split in a ortho spin state bonds to carbon and blows it all apart in the cylinders, resulting in 80%+ cleaner emissions, burning all the fuel they purchase, rather than 25% left over hot un burned fuel goes down the exhaust manifold to be re heated up in the DEF filter ( boat anchor device) hanging underneath the passenger hot seat truck.

‘Impossible’ EM drive engine produces thrust from nothing — and science can’t explain why

IT’s impossible. But science appears to say it’s happening. A prototype space engine seems to be producing energy from nothing. And it’s just passed peer review.
The reactionless thruster was met with a surge of excitement — and scepticism — when reports of its science-fiction sounding ability to pull fuel out of the void of space itself emerged in 2001.
If true, we could be walking on the surface of Pluto much sooner than anyone dared dream.
Despite a bevy of tests, including this one by NASA’s propulsion workshop (Eagleworks), the bold claim simply hasn’t gone away. Now it’s another step closer to credibility.
The formal study into the controversial, physics-defying EM Drive was formally published in the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ Journal of Propulsion and Power late last week. This means the processes and measurements used in testing the performance of this ‘impossible engine’ could not be faulted by a panel of independent scientists.
It doesn’t mean it’s real, though.
It just means something’s happening that isn’t yet fully understood.
Dr Patrick Neumann, the Australian inventor of a highly efficient space ion engine which uses metal as its fuel, says the idea is exciting.
At best, he says, it could be an extraordinarily efficient means of powering our way to the stars.


At worst, there’s an unrecognised, unwanted spanner in the works that everyone will think was obvious — in hindsight.

The Science behind the technology

“Mars and back on one tank of fuel”
We’ve built a brand new kind of ion engine (that’s a kind of rocket), that has just broken the world record for specific impulse previously held by NASA’s HIPEP thruster.

This level of fuel efficiency is so good that one of these engines could send a probe to Mars and back on a single fuel rod. But it could also be great for keeping satellites in their proper position in orbit, or cheaply sending all the heavy equipment ahead of a manned mission somewhere.

How does it work?

The Neumann Drive uses solid fuel and electricity to produce thrust. It is a “wire-triggered pulsed cathodic arc system” and works kind of like an arc welder.

Arc welders have a cathode (the welding rod, charged negative) and an anode (the work piece, which has the anode-lead clamped to it). When the tip of the welding rod gets close enough to the work piece, an arc of electricity sparks between them. This happens because the electric field between the cathode and anode is strong enough to rip electrons off the air molecules between them and causes a giant “spark” to jump. The arc allows electrical current to flow through the cathode, which heats the material on the tip of the welding rod.

As the electrons jump off the end of the rod and enter the arc, they carry along with them some atoms from the rod in the form of plasma. In an Arc Welder, these iron and carbon atoms then get deposited on the work piece at high energy, creating a small melt pool and the desired weld. In the Neumann Drive, these atoms will be hurled off into space, producing thrust in the drive itself.

In our system the cathode is a cylindrical rod of conducting material that we choose to use as fuel (eg magnesium, vanadium etc). The cathode is charged negative with respect to the anode, and a charging voltage of between 80 and 250V is typically used. The anode is a hollow cylinder that is aligned coaxially with the cathode, but offset slightly forwards, as shown in the diagram below.



The cathode rod has a hole bored down the centre of it, which holds the insulated trigger pin. It needs to be insulated so that the arc can be triggered only at the right time. Our system uses an electrical flashover system to trigger the arc, which means that we pulse a high voltage signal from the trigger pin to the cathode, creating the conditions necessary for plasma formation to occur. There are other methods for triggering an arc (including lasers), but they are not as robust as this.

Once the arc has been triggered, plasma will be created in very small and very bright spots located on the cathode surface close to the trigger location; these plasma generation sites are called “cathode spots” for obvious reasons. The cathode spots erode material from the cathode, ionising and accelerating it into the vacuum chamber so that the plasma moves downstream at high velocity through the anode mouth.

This so-called “drifting plasma” is the exhaust of our rocket, and pushes the rest of the system forwards as it hurtles away. Higher exhaust velocities mean more efficient fuel use which is measured in specific impulse, often called “bounce per ounce.”

What fuels does it use?

We’ve tried out all kinds of materials as fuel. We’ll be posting a showcase about several of them over the coming few weeks, and I’ll add links to these posts as they appear. The list below contains a non-exhaustive list of the things that we’ve tried:

Molybdenum – our fastest fuel – best for sending people to Mars
Magnesium – our most efficient fuel – best for sending equipment on long missions
Aluminium – best for recycled space junk
Carbon – our most interesting fuel – reusing * ahem * waste-products from astronauts to get them to where they’re going
Titanium
Vanadium
Tin – a pretty poor fuel that we learned a lot from
Bismuth – our most useless fuel… just don’t bother
