Desalination Evaporation
Nov 30th, 2012 at 3:10pm

Hello Friends,

Desalination is the process of removing salt from water to create fresh, drinkable water. Considering that most of the Earth's surface is covered with saltwater, the ability to efficiently desalinate water could be a cost-effective and environmentally safe way to deal with drinking water shortages in the future. Desalination can be accomplished in many ways, including freezing and osmosis, but the most basic way to desalinate water is through evaporation.

A solvent is a substance capable of dissolving another substance. The substance dissolved into a solvent is called a solute. The resulting mixture is called a solution.

Salt, a solute in this case, is quite soluble in water, the solvent. According to Solubility of Things, a chemistry website, this means that salt dissolves easily in water to create a solution. We call this solution saltwater. We can not separate the elements of a solution from one another without using special processes.

Thanks and Regards,
Harry Potterish

There was a company setting up solar stills in modular form.
So you could just buy one 3Msquare panel at a time.
I priced supplying a mining camp using the panels and from memory it would cost $7000 per person.
The beauty of the solar units as opposed to the reverse osmosis units is running cost ,any water can be used and the waste water volume can be reduced.

I had a  different design for a solar desalination unit, but no plastic manufacturer had any interest in it.

Interesting how the company that got the contract to build the desal plant in Victoria is NOT Australian

They will be using the reverse osmosis technique or Membrane technology to separate the salt and impurities from the incoming sea water stream.

Membrane technology was first invented and developed by the CSIRO many years ago, then commercialised by MEMTECH

THis technology is now foreign owned and we need to BUY it in and pay IP royalties to foreign corporations.

Are we that dumb in Australia?

Don't bother answering that question folks

There are all kinds of clever things that can be done with solar energy. You never hear much of solar thermal air conditioning in Australia, but for large installations like mining camps, it would be ideal.
