An iceberg expected to be one of the 10 largest ever recorded is ready to break away from Antarctica, scientists say. A long-running rift in the Larsen C ice shelf grew suddenly in December and now just 20km of ice is keeping the 5,000 sq km piece from floating away.
Larsen C is the most northern major ice shelf in Antarctica.
Researchers based in Swansea say the loss of a piece a quarter of the size of Wales will leave the whole shelf vulnerable to future break-up.

Rare Astrology: January 8th-February 6, 2017 All Planets Are Moving Direct

Starting January 8th and going through February 6th, 2017, all of the major planets will be moving direct (forward). Ancients saw this as a time of great fortune and a very opportune time.

This time period, which lasts almost 1 month, is started off by Mercury stationing direct and will end with Jupiter stationing retrograde on February 6th, 2017. So, what then is the meaning of Mercury starting off the APDM in January? Wave writes:

Let us borrow some phrases for a moment from the shamanic / astrology perspective where Mercury is symbolized as a quick, versatile planet that can easily traverse the Upper World, the Middle World and the Lower World, in just one instant. How about the meaning of Jupiter ending the APDM in February? Wave states:

Jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius and Mercury before it stations direct will be in the sign of Sag so right away we see a symbolic celestial correspondence between the two.  Both Mercury and Jupiter experience an enhanced energy of the other. Note also that Jupiter opposes Uranus through the entire APDM event which may spark a sudden totally unexpected (Uranus) and huge (Jupiter) altercation or possibly even a physical resonance shaking up the forces of the Earth.

Throughout APDM 2017, which lasts about 30 days, there are several dates that can cause global triggers stimulating earthly and personal events.  These dates add cosmic complexities to APDM.

As 2017 begins, one thing is clear. Sunspots are vanishing.
So far, the sunspot number has been zero almost every day: Jan. 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th. A close look at today's sun reveals no dark cores at all.

The increasingly-blank face of the sun is a herald of Solar Minimum. Sunspot numbers rise and fall with an ~11-year period, slowly oscillating between Solar Max and Solar Min. In 2017, the pendulum is swinging toward minimum.

Contrary to popular belief, space weather does not stop when sunspots vanish. The last few nights are proof: Auroras have been raging around the Arctic Circle. The cause of the display is a solar wind stream flowing from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere. Such "coronal holes" are common during solar minimum. No sunspots? No problem.

In fact, a lot of interesting things happen during solar minimum. For instance, as sunspots vanish, the extreme ultraviolet output of the sun decreases. This causes the upper atmosphere of Earth to cool and collapse. With less air "up there" to cause orbital decay, space junk accumulates around our planet.
Also during solar minimum, the heliosphere shrinks, bringing interstellar space closer to Earth. Galactic cosmic rays penetrate the inner solar system with relative ease. Indeed, a cosmic ray surge is already underway. Goodbye sunspots, hello deep-space radiation.

See? That blank sun is more interesting than it looks.

The Milky Way's Supermassive Black Hole is Spewing Out Planet-Size 'Spitballs'

Every few thousand years, an unlucky star wanders too close to the black hole at the center of the Milky Way. The black hole's powerful gravity rips the star apart, sending a long streamer of gas whipping outward. That would seem to be the end of the story, but it's not. New research shows that not only can the gas gather itself into planet-size objects, but those objects then are flung throughout the galaxy in a game of cosmic "spitball."

"A single shredded star can form hundreds of these planet-mass objects. We wondered: Where do they end up? How close do they come to us? We developed a computer code to answer those questions," says lead author Eden Girma, an undergraduate student at Harvard University and a member of the Banneker/Aztlan Institute.

Girma is presenting her findings at a Wednesday poster session and Friday press conference at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Girma's calculations show that the closest of these planet-mass objects might be within a few hundred light-years of Earth.
It would have a weight somewhere between Neptune and several Jupiters.

It would also glow from the heat of its formation, although not brightly enough to have been detected by previous surveys. Future instruments like the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope might spot these far-flung oddities.

She also finds that the vast majority of the planet-mass objects - 95 percent - will leave the galaxy entirely due to their speeds of about 20 million miles per hour (10,000 km/s). Since most other galaxies also have giant black holes at their cores, it's likely that the same process is at work in them.

"Other galaxies like Andromeda are shooting these 'spitballs' at us all the time," says co-author James Guillochon of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
